Music video for Eddie Vedder's "Hard Sun".
Lyrics:
When I walk beside her
I am a better man
When I look to leave her
I always stagger back again
Once I built an ivory tower
So I could worship from above
When I climb down to be set free
She took me in again
Theres a big
A big hard sun
Beating on the big people
In a big hard world
When she comes to greet me
She is mercy at my feet
And I, I see her inner charm
She just throws it back at me
Once I dug an early grave
To find a better land
She just smiled and laughed at me
And took her rules back again
Theres a big
A big hard sun
Beating on the big people
In a big hard world

this film marked my life a lot and only increased my desire to fulfill my dream, which is to explore the world, to visit new places, to connect more with nature, without having to kill animals of course, why this is living, instead to live a routine of working 8 hours a day, paying bills and cleaning the house.

Interesting story portrayed by actors playing parts in a story based loosely on a real story which did not end well for the main character. Not the first movie with the story line of man rejecting a material life. Wont be the last. Movies are not a guide for living a life. At best movies tell a story and maybe, just maybe, get you to think on the message a director is trying to tell.

his story saved my life. I was planning on pulling the same exact stunt he did, including ending in alaska, before I found his book. But his revelation in his final journal entries( that life and adventure hold little meaning when you dont share them) made me realise that living life was far more about connecting with those around you than any excitement adventure can bring you alone.

It is. I do not share his idealism at all but I respect him for having the heart and courage to live what he truly believed in without fear of judgement and ridiculed besides the fact that he touched so many hearts and souls of so many people on some level he met along the way in his journey with his infectious pure and youthful spirit and inspired many to follow their dream of absolute freedom albeit with a lesson, to venture out prepared and respect the natural balance of freedom and dependence.

I commented just a bit ago, but I would like to add being out in nature is the best medicine. I have wicked depression. I really don't like to be around people. Remote camping in the wild is, to me, the cure. Life is simple. No TV. No running water. There is an amazing place here in Colorado I was introduced to many years ago. It's an area that is popular for deer and elk hunting in the fall. There is dispersed camping where there are no designated camping sites, no toilets, nothing. Total freedom. Be comfortable with no phone service. Be comfortable with doing your business out in the woods that follows the guidelines of the National park or State park. These simple ways bring me so, so much happiness

@@idiotshittiot what makes him brainless was that he walked into a situation completely unprepared, likely poisoned himself, and died being trapped by a river that would have been easily crossable had he bothered to prepare even a little bit more. Whats worse is that one of his final reflections was that he had wasted his time and that bonds to friends and family meant more than anything he could ever gain alone. The very bonds he broke to accomplish his short sighted dream had been his final regret. Dont pretend he was enlightened, he was just as lost as the rest of us right up to the bitter end.

A lot of people don't realize that MOST of the story is the main character having interactions with PEOPLE who HELPED him along the way. He even realizes that happiness is not being alone but sharing love with others. The director went out of his way to say: Fucking off to the woods is not fulfilling. Still people are romanticizing it. Yes everyday life sucks, but share it with people and it will improve.

Powerful film. Saw it on its release date in a theater in Kalispell, Montana. Reminded me of my own youth 50 years ago. Great soundtrack also. Perhaps most important was that Christopher McCandless’ story was from his journal. Sean Penn was also very savvy in his making the film.

RIP Chris McCandless. He had such a long life ahead but chose to do what made him truly happy. Grew up around materialistic parents and he wasn’t interested in becoming like them. I’m just glad we got to hear his story.

www.newyorker.com/books/page-turner/how-chris-mccandless-died/amp I admire McCandless for his passion for life and longing for simplistic living, there was absolutely no way he could have known this, although it proves a varied diet is essential to survival.

This song and others from the soundtrack make me feel a lot of the worlds worries feel so small. All the problems society has and all the problems every individual faces everyday. The music has a stronger almost earthy natural feeling that seems to trump all human made issues. It’s uplifting and deep at the same time.

so....yeah, crying as I listen to this in 10/2020 just as tears flowed and flowed at the end of this movie when I saw it, in the theater....which I saw well after reading the book. This was the music of my coming of age, and this movie represented a lot of us resless spirits that lived in mountain communities making just enough money during any "on season" so that you could cram in to a van with the person you loved at the time and go and see what the roads, waves, mountains, rivers, crags and hills had to offer this time around. It wasn't just the road, or the mountains or the politics that united us, it was the music, music was our church our bible and our God.
