It's not THAT old. I think it's made in the 70s. I think it's probably low budget, which is why it has "eerie" quality. Movies with, say, Marilyn Monroe or Audrey Hepburn are older.

@@eunicestone6532 No, Poe was not an alcoholic, nor was he an addict. He did not overdrink, he had a horrible reaction when he drank any amount of anything. He may have had some kind of brain damage, something else was going on with him. He was always struggling. His stepfather was a rich Scottish merchant @$$hole who helped Poe not at all when he got out in the world. Poe was raised as a well-off Southern gentleman, used to finer things, and lived like a pauper. He was intelligent, kind to all friends, brilliant, but could not function when alcohol basically made him sick. What would the world have had if his step-father had supported him? Sad to think about.

@@nativevirginian8344 There was a theory that he was a diabetic. And yes, his foster father was a mean, jealous man. John Allan never formally adopted Poe. It was another tragedy that his foster mother, who truly loved Poe, died young.

Pretty good adaptation. At least in my opinion. I've seen several---the first was Roger Corman's classic 1960 version starring Vincent Price. Gothic horror is one of my favorite genres. Unfortunately, it's a rather lost cinematic art, most likely because there's no longer any audience for it among young people. Thanks for posting this !

This is an adaptation which is rather nearer the original story than other versions. Although the plot is truncated, the sense of Gothic gloom and horror still comes across chillingly well. I'm unsure whether the location is meant to be In England or in USA in the film. In Poe's tale, it could have been either. Wherever it was, it doesn't detract from being such an effective story / film.

By the way the band 'In the Nursery' has scored this gem! This version has now been professionally transferred to digital format and features a music score by In the Nursery (ITN), as originally intended by Copper.
