so just to clarify: i put knight of the reliquary in the yasharn deck because you're allowed to sacrifice lands, however you can't pay life for any effect which is why fetch lands don't work. a card like evolving wilds would be fine but traditional fetch lands, like windswept require you to pay 1 life to activate which you can't do with yasharn in play.

Nope u can add fetch lands as it says nonland which as far as I’m aware let’s you sac lands such as fetch lands even though you are paying the life, as this is a land ability.

I built a Szadek deck back shortly before RTR came out, grappling hook was an all star. I will never forget playing with my uncle and aunt, and getting Szadek stolen as a 40/40 and being killed by it after my boots got Harmonic Slivered. Man, good memories, love the video!

I've had a Jolrael deck for years. Life from the loam is pure gas. She really punishes opponents who want to Wrath. And she can kill out of nowhere. She's downright nasty with Ezuri's Predation.

Love this series (and the whole channel), Demo! I wanted to throw out a potentially cool deck idea that I havent been able to find the right commander/color combo for. I love the idea of strict proctor/torpor orb effects to cheat in creatures like Phyrexian Dreadnought, Eater of days, Tempting Wurm, Hunted Horror, etc. who have negative ETB effects. Ive also played around with Manifest as a way around this as a backup. I thought Obeka could be a good commander since I can end the turn while the ETB is on the stack but it doesn't have white..You are much more creative than me so I would love to hear your thoughts!

Whenever you wanna do something that involves reanimation i would suggest horde of notions. He is 5c can reanimate elementals for wubrg so all you gotta do is play a conspiracy aracane adaptation or maskwood nexus and now you can reanimate anything at instant speed for 5 mana. You have all the colors so you could run stuff like obeka sundial and whatever disruption an fattys you want. With those new evoke eles from mh2 you add subtelty to counter stuff solitude to exile stuff over n over endurance to save your gy. You run a couple elementals for card draw ramp and some removal maybe a revilark to reanimate those hate bears then the rest of your deck is all your guys with negative etbs an the stuff that stops it. If any of your stuff dies you can get it back with horde. He can save some deck space by not needing a bunch of reanimation spells and you can reuse certain elementals with evoke so you can tutor your synergy creatures with flamekin harbringer with your creature type changer. Any creature deck can really run horde of notions with a type changer and you have black tutors an green creature tutors and flamekin harbringer so you can find all your stuff pretty reliably every game. Yasharn is a pretty good hate bear that would work great in that deck its an ele an can make your phyrexian dreadnaught jus cost one mana.

I did have a green blue deck based around this with those old leviathans and krakens that have horrible etbs (or are just horrible in general) and then saccing them for profit to stuff like Greater Good and Ooze Garden. Torpor Orb was an all star in that deck.

Reminder for anyone who did want to go into the Stax archetype with Yasharn: Gaddok Teeg is a great hate-piece. As for a big splashy, pseudo win-con (although it is a nonbo with Gaddok) is Overwhelming Splendor. You’d probably need stuff to protect it with (which extremely easy in Selesnya), but making all of your opponents creatures almost completely useless is huge!

Szadek was the first Legendary I ever owned and years later I built my Mill Edh deck around him. If I ever want to play against stronger commanders I switch to Mirko Vosk. But he's just so devastating if you can get him out and protect him. If only he had been 2-3 mana cheaper...

I recently brewed a szadek deck that uses sudden spoiling type effects to remove szadek's abilities after blocks. Use it after he gets huge, and your opponent gets domed for commander damage. You can of course use it against your opponents creatures as well, giving you some flexibility.

Ooh, target creature loses all abilities... Just wait until Szadek gets a significant enough amount of power, then remove all of his abilities with some spell or permanent. This can turn him into an unexpected commander damage win-con. Dance of the Skywise, Frogify, Ichthyomorphosis, Gift of Tusks, Kasmina's Transmutation, Mercurial Transformation, Ovinize, Polymorphist's Jest, Turn to Frog, Dress Down, Sudden Spoiling, and Will Kenrith... super awesome.

Considering how mill often helps opponents instead of hurting them, Szadek would be a really interesting political include in the 99 of a Reyhan list that includes blue, like Reyhan/Silas or Reyhan/Ishai. Make an ally that wants to be milled and mill them for a ton while slowly amassing tons of +1/+1 counters with their protection, before running out a sac outlet or removal spell and shifting all those +1/+1 counters onto a big threat, or just milling another opponent to death.

Love your point about yasharn, people are often far to quick to apply stax strategies to commanders and aside from the fact I'm not a fan of the strategy it's not even really that viable because it gets hated out so quick and causes negative stereotypes for commanders that otherwise could be built in more intricate ways. My atraxa +1 counters deck puts out some wins when people don't assume I'm playing infect or super friends, I haven't even bothered making a zur deck for the same reason despite being a fan of breaking aggro triggered abilities (and not even in red, of course I want to find synergies) because zur never gets a proper chance and when it does it just so happens to be a stax player

I have an Anthousa, Setessan Hero deck that runs Druids' Repository instead of Nature's Will. It's one mana cheaper and you don't lose the mana you get from it on your next untap step. Another fun card is Leyline of Abundance, you can treat Jolrael's ability as kind of like a 3-mana High Tide for the turn.

I'm inspired by this take on Yasharn, and would personally go away from land discard, and instead go into "play as many lands as you can" / Walking Atlas territory, maybe add landfall triggers. Once you have a board full of lands, finishers like Finale of Glory or Finale of Devastation are easy.

I voted in Seizan, Perverter of Truth as the next one, just because I had a deck idea using Asmodeus ( some deck that look like a group hug, with a lot of symmetric draw and good stuff for everyone, but punish the players after with cards like pox, tegrid and discard damage and such, like the demon contracts in movies, where looks like a good deal at the beginning and after gets terrible) and Seizan looks like a possibility to do the same

i ran Yashorn as pure stax, and it actually worked well. It was a commander deck i made with zero artifacts as a personal challenge. i used stony silence etc. and it is the only commander deck i made with no sol ring also.

So an important interaction with Szadek that I'm surprised you didn't mention: Szadek's ability replaces every instance of damage he would deal, so if you give him double strike (through Fireshrieker and Grappling Hook, as someone mentioned) you get two mill triggers per attack, one where he mills 5 and one where he mills 10.

i dont think yasharn is underwhelming... i personally really like him. i build him once as a stax commander and he was very good and made me a ton of fun and his abilitys are all good... when he enters you get 2 lands so you simply keep every hand that is able to cast him and that makes things a lot easy and also the stax effect is really good... i built him a meta call because most other players in my playgroup that time played sacrifice decks and it was really annoying and Yasharn helped out a lot :)

From experience, Turbo Naus decks can go off as early as turn 2, and it's why my current deck of Rule of Law Kenrith usually aimed to have a stax effect out by around the same time to stop early and super agressive hands from potentially ending the game. Can I ask what strategy you had planned for the Yasharn?

Your in black why not leyline of the void you dont want your opponents cards in their graveyards because of reanimator and stuff like vigor and Kozilek, Butcher of Truth just shut down mill strategies.

I would like to see underrated commanders too. Decks that don't see play but can be amazing to bring more attention to them.
