About All In The Family:
One of the most acclaimed comedy series of all time, All in the Family with Archie Bunker as the irascible, highly opinionated, working-class family man who viewed the world on his terms and his terms only. When not arguing with his liberal son-in-law, "Meathead," Archie took refuge in his long-suffering wife, Edith, who tries her best to understand Archie's conservative ways and outdated beliefs.

@@generalgk Well, I'm 58 years old. I was in politics for over 20 years. I had a professional job which took me all over. And in MY neck of the woods, I have yet to see anyone lift a finger to help ME! Hell, I have health issues and during the pandemic, I couldn't find a company to cut my lawn. I must have called 20 landscapers and only 2 returned my calls. Yet, some of my lovely neighbors called the town and reported me for having grass too high. When I was a boy, not only did we KNOW all the neighbors, but they would be over here helping me out! I always say that if I dropped from a heart attack int he middle of the street, rather than help, the neighbors would be pissed that they couldn't get their car down the street!

The writers really gave Archie some demeaning, cruel, and mean spirited lines toward Edith and her role as wife (from his point of view) throughout the series. Occasionally like we see here Edith stands up for herself to get the plot point across and put Archie in his place, but these scenes are often difficult to watch given how degrading they can be. Eventually Archie sees the error in his ways throughout most of these kinds of episodes, and the writers usually get their point across to the audience.

Archie speaks the way he does because he has old fashioned views of what a wife should be and only replicates what he seen from his parents. He cares and loves Edith but he can't see what he does as harm and Edith is kinda in the same boat as Archie because she was taught pretty much the same thing growing up just to a lessor degree which is why she can argue back at times, she doesn't expect much but when things pops up and she gets denied, she'll fight back and Archie usually folds as he learns. I wish they toned him down so he could learn more through the show but it's just 2 people living in the past stuck in their ways and in the end they were relatively happy.

All In The Family is one of my favorites, and I'm 57. It's not one of my favorites because I like Archie. It's one of my favorites because he was the butt of all the jokes. He was the bad guy. He was the rotten husband, father-in-law, father, employee. All the superheroes around him kept knocking him down every time he lashed out. He got his comeuppance. Carroll O'Connor was fantastic, as was Jean Stapleton, Sally Struthers, Mike Evans, Sherman Hemsley, Isabel Sanford, Rob Reiner, and so many more. This show dealt with the societal and cultural issues, systemic racism and sexism, religious bigotry, politics and more only with humor, and ridicule. Classic. I adore Edith Bunker's character.
@retroguy9494
@retroguy9494 Жыл бұрын
WOW dude...I'm a year older than you which means we grew up in the same generation and you just don't get it, do you? While the show dealt with all the issues you stated and was actually the very first TV show to do so, Archie was not the person you describe and was NOT a bad guy. Archie was the son of uneducated and ignorant parents. He was raised during the depression when people had to fend for themselves. He was also abused by his father as we learn in the episode where he and Mike are locked in the storeroom of the bar overnight. He's a World War II combat veteran. He is a man who sees his world as he knew it his entire life changing before his very eyes. It frightens him and he doesn't know how to deal with it so he acts out. He wants to better himself but due to his lack of education knows he won't be anything more than a loading dock foreman. That is until he buys the bar and after that, his personality begins to change and he softens in his opinions. Yes, he has a big mouth but he is never violent. He has a lot of friends and is a charter member of his lodge. But above all else, he loves God, his family and his country in exactly that order. Despite all his complaining about the changes he has to deal with and in many ways accept, even his total disagreement with Mike, at the end of the day he loves them, cares about them and provides for them. This is what men of the 'greatest generation' did, unlike OUR generation with its 68% divorce rate for first marriages and large numbers of 'deadbeat dads.' In case you didn't notice, most of the time he ends up giving into Edith. Mostly because he loves her, but on some level because deep down under he knows he's wrong. Didn't you ever know anyone like him? I sure did!

Archie wasn't used to Edith standing up for herself because she did it so rarely. But when it was an issue very important to her she stood up and made Archie (or Mike or Gloria) listen. Like when she had saved money for a 25th anniversary to go back to the place they'd spent their honeymoon and Archie wanted to go to a stupid basketball game she stood up to him and said "You can go to a basketball game anytime but your 25th anniversary comes once in a lifetime. We're going to Atlantic City." Archie gave in. ' When Mike thought Archie hated him and Edith pointed out that Archie was jealous, Mike didn't want to listen, but she made him listen! When Mike and Gloria were arguing and she told them the story about her parents and maple syrup and how her parents didn't speak to each other for 3 weeks and after that things were never the same. "I know maple syrup is a little thing but would you rather break up over something bigger?" For a supposed dingbat, Edith was very wise!

Did people really think of woman's role back then
@retroguy9494
@retroguy9494 Жыл бұрын
Absolutely! Unlike today, the 'greatest generation' DID have clearly defined roles for men and women. I remember as a little boy when this show was first run on TV my own neighborhood. Almost all the women were homemakers, especially if they had children. A couple worked if their children were grown or if they had no children. But most women back then were secretaries, teachers, nurses, retail salesladies or worked as bank tellers. Caring for a home, children, making sure home cooked meals were served, etc. were sources of pride for many women. In fact, some actually tried to outdo each other. Like a competition in neighborhoods. I'm still IN my family home my parents built. Now, almost ALL the women work. Their kids get farmed out to daycare and such.
