Edith takes in a little boy who is left by a woman claiming that Mike is the father.

The mother in the episode was right about one thing though.Finding someone willing to date you when you have a child isn't easy.The fact that the boy didn't talk and start giving out information is a good indicator that even he knew something wasn't right.The way Edith avoids Mike and Gloria's questions really shows that she isn't good in crisis.

I realize that Edith was clearly "a little different".... but in this episode, she was *quite* different. Thinking she could just walk away from the 3 of them with no explanation was...... Anyway, we heard that Archie had a tough time with leaving school at an early age, his father was quite mean, school bullies and being called "shoe-bootie," but we never got any explanation as to why Edith was like she was.

No, it wasn't. That honor probably goes to a sitcom in the late 40s called Mary Kay and Johnny where the female lead was actually pregnant. It was the first show to have a pregnancy storyline. (It also was the first to have a married couple in the same bed, most likely because they were actually married.) Unfortunately, no copies of the show exist any longer so it's going to be a mystery if it ever happened.
