Great job! Since the start of the channel, we have learned a lot about editing such as the J-cuts, the importance of rhythm when using b-roll over music, and cutting out redundancy. Thanks so much for the excellent video and nice editing! -Jack (I edit this channel)

Hey Jack! You do a great job now, the style you've got there works so well to keep you hooked. You guys inspired me a lot when developing my own style, I pretty much steal the pitch drop + black and white effect in every video I make (just makes the comic moments so much better :)

Hi Jack, not sure if you’d still reply but what gave you the inspiration for the camera flip to mimic a different camera angle? I genuinely think that’s genius and wonder how you can come up with ideas like that.

For editing to music, edit to the snare/clap. The kick becomes muddy and inaudible when there is talking over the track or when the mix is lowered. Because of this, the snare/clap becomes the most important percussion element and can add a more recognizable rhythm for your viewer to engage with. Thats my friendly tip :)

Not knowing how to level up is a great point. Not only should we naturally be leveling up video by video but there's got to be at some point where you consciously level up; taking on a project that seems way out of your league. For me, that was making a few 45-80 minute videos. If I can keep people entertained for that long, sky's the limit. Now when I go back to making regular length 20-30 minute videos, it's a piece of cake and not such a daunting task anymore

Best ending ever! I've been making film and videos since 2000 and it's fascinating how different one needs to approach the medium when your audience isn't locked down in front of a 40' screen in a dark theatre. One can get away with a lot more spaciousness. But obviously it really all depends on what your desired outcome is AND what the viewer's desired outcome is. Great break down.

There are three key successes to a thriving KZbin channel. 1) Unique Enjoyable Content 2) Personality and Charisma of Content Creator 3) Very appealing and smart editing If you can get all three, then you will hit the 1m mark. You can outsource number 3 and you can naturally grow with number 2. Number 1 is continuing to be creative with the ideas for many years. That's where you will always have to shine to become legendary....

You probably would not even have to fix them, for obvious lack of additional material/b-roll and such but telling us, that is the mistake -> he/she should have done that instead, to make it way better would totally suffice. Currently watching all of your videos. The tip at the end saw an IMMEDIATE change in my retention, I actually refilmed the end of my video and it worked like a charm. I've been rather successful at gathering subscribers, but pretty meh when it comes to retention and general "entertainment" of my videos. It's tough though, I do a lot of tutorial / how-to / tip and tricks content and finding how to put a spin on them has never been top priority. Going to work at it though, thanks for the great vids!

I literally did this last week - Re-edited a video from over 16min to under 5min and deleted the original. In a week, the new version has already gotten approximately 40% of the view count the first had in 9 months. Thanks for all the advice.

There is so much I have yet learn haha Thank you for all of the hard work you put in to make these videos! It has become extremely apparent to me that I'll be needing a KZbin notebook 📓 !! (Oh and thank you for providing the lingo too, makes it easy to research certain aspects of editing)

I cannot tell you how much I love your channel. (I have mixed feeling when people say this to me, but you really do deserve far more subscribers!) This video was brilliant. I had always been a little worried about my pacing, but hadn't really had the courage to try out j- and l-cuts. I watched this and gave it a go on my latest video. I'm not sure that I got it a 100% right - it is a bit tricky - but the audience retention amongst my subscribers is right up. About an extra minute at the moment! (And this is on top of an improvement I got from adding more b-roll, even if just photos with a ken burns going on!) I can feel that it feels faster paced and more engaging. Thanks so much.

Awesome!! I can believe it would boost retention doing those things, every little bit of extra effort adds up. Keep practicing and you'll start to find it all more natural too :)

Ed I have watched this video twice already! This is really the meat and potatoes, keeping the viewer engaged and satisfied. I would love to see more of these before and afters, which I think is a much better teacher than just giving a list of tips (which you did but added more context). One note, the original title you had was what hooked me to save the video for later. I noticed when I came back to watch it you had changed the title. My first thought was, I'm not sure if I would have been as quickly interested in the video had you gone with this 2nd title originally. Not meant to be a criticism but rather hopefully helpful to you to know that there was something particularly interesting to me knowing the video was going to tell me how to improve my videos by using an example from a successful YTer's beginning videos. Not sure why that felt more enticing to click, but it did.

Thats interesting thanks, the reason I changed it was because it got the worst launch I've had for a very, very long time, id thought the title would be hit or miss but it was such a bad flop I had to try fix it. Unfortunately i plan the titles first and then all the content around the title so it'll most likely hit my retention now, but lesson learnt, don't release a video unless you're 100% confident in the title and topic

@@FilmBooth so then the trick is how to title it so that KZbin suggests it but also make it something people can't wait to watch. I still think the video will do well, because once your viewers watch it, they're going to stay through the whole video. It was a really good video Ed.

@@FilmBooth what if you used the first title to hook the viewer then a divider followed by the searchable title? Best of both? I noticed Cathrin Manning would do that and her videos seemed to do well.

4:37 From a UX perspective, this image flip should be used in line with your message (eg: a different perspective on the subject. an addition, etc) ;) 9:20 This is definitely the way to go, but let's not forget that this require extra work and sometimes extra money for stock videos and images... Thanks! :)
