Editing with AI: Are we Trading Creativity for Convenience?

But we are (playfully) articulating the reasons we will keep LumaFusion's focus on empowering individual editors' creative choices over giving them pushbutton tools to have an AI design their work for them. There's room for both approaches in most editors' workflows.

This is so true, I love the power and control over what I create, where AI has it's uses is the machine learning type features such as masking, the fact that Lunafusion is for touch devices I look forward to the day when I can take my stylus and draw around an object I want to mask or even remove from the video and have some AI fill in the background.....that is AI which adds value to help the user accomplish the idea they have....where AI replaces the human brain for creating the ideas themselves or automated script writing I'm not interested at all. Only a human being can tell a story, but I think does no harm in providing some features that make the end result more efficient to produce.

You're picking up what we're laying down. We are certainly investigating what types of on-device AI tools we can leverage to add value without supplanting editors' original creativity--our AI Person Keyer and Voice Isolation tools on the iOS version of LumaFusion are a start down that road.

Nah, call me old school but AI for me is a cop out, totally agree the editing process is part of the ‘creation’ process. Making decisions based on the content rather than AI assuming ‘it’ knows better. Been using LumaFusion since early days, in its current form it works for me, keep AI (aggravating intelligence) out of it.

There are definitely things I'd rather let an AI do, like rotoscoping. because i find it tedious and don't know how to be creative with cutting out subjects. But i can see how a repetitive task like this can be relaxing for others.

100 percent! Where we draw the line is at incorporating generative/'creative' tools, for operations where a large language model AI is doing creative work for users. That stuff can be handy, but from where we stand, it's not the point.

As far as i know, currently luma fusion has only 2 ai features for the moment, ai person cut out and voice noise redaction, which only works on iOS devices if I'm not mistaken. And i guess we won't get anything else soon if company thinks among those lines.

I think it boils down to quality vs quantity. Certainly a lot of the vertical video is just quick and easy quantity content and there are plenty of apps outside of CapCut that can get that job done. But for the longer form videos, I think there is a value in a product like Luma Fusion. I have enjoyed learning editing despite my early footage needing lots of help and a lack of some direction on my part about the stories I want to tell. However, as I narrow down my focus and learn more about the art of creating content, I do feel the satisfaction of editing in Luma Fusion. However, I can also see using some of the AI based apps to create the quick and easy vertial content. I will never be a professional editor, but I feel I can find the right balance using both types of apps to tell my stories. Vertical to me is basically "advertising," while the long form product is the actual product, if that makes sense.

Looking back at footage picking the 'best bits' doesn't necessarily mean an action sequence picked by AI. Editing my own work means I can relive and pick moments from the footage that means something to me and the people I'll share it with. In my latest project I'm including a clip of another trip that we spoke about and made us laugh. AI can't do that.

We aren't against people having the option to use AI--indeed we use some AI tools for certain operations ourselves. But the mission behind LumaFusion's is all about empowering editors to use their own OI (organic intelligence) for creative work, with the idea that that is where the value lies for many creators.

i do really love my luma since 2019.But now 2025, i think we need more features that would really help to get rid of thinking using another app to finish the job. Like example, making documentary video really hard to finish putting the subtitles manually using luma. So you are tempted to use another flatform that offers voice to text or text to voice options. Also more titles options. Templates,styles,motion text etc.

Ai can be fascinating and provide an alternative perspective, but don't let Ai do the work and then call yourself a 'creator', quite the opposite, you have just become an 'operator', and given a short training course, 'anyone' can produce what you have let Ai produce.. I have used Ai to create artwork, that doesn't now make me a painter or an artist. I'll stick with LumaFusion as it is, take some pride in my skills and decisions to create something that is unique to me and speaks from the heart, why, because I am a 'creator', not a machine.

In the Color and Effects editor you can select the Crystal effect under the Distortions icon (the swirl), then you can add a Gaussian Blur under Blurs icon (rain drop).

I don’t think that is has to be such a polarized view, I think that there is a lot of areas where AI can help us edit faster by making existing tools better, and it can also give people ideas and inspiration if you are stuck with an idea, here is an example of why it could be a good thing, imagine if you had to have all the knowledge of the inner workings of your car, in order to get to work, no one would want to use any invention if that was the case, humans develop tools so we can work smarter and faster, in 50 years the way we do video editing will be similar to copying a book by hand and inventing the printing press, it might look like it’s taking away a ton of work that can provide you with a great deal of background knowledge, but is it really that important to know, if all you are trying to achieve is to copy a book. People have always been wary of new technologies, and been afraid of what it might take away, but it constantly gives us ways to think differently about our approach.

Well, the 'polarization' here is mostly playful. We agree AI--particularly on-device machine learning type AI--can be of great help to editors, without getting in the way of creativity. Essentially we are staking our territory as a tool which prioritizes empowering creative people to realize their own ideas, in a way that some generative AI editing tools don't do.

I think there is a resistance to AI and in my humble view it can unlock creativity, there is nothing wrong with AI as a tool. I use AI in teaching everyday, because it gives me an extra dimension in my lesson planning, does it destroy my creativity no… I love editing in Luma Fusion, love to be original and view Luma Fusion as a tool to enhance that. The majority of my students are visual learners and enjoy visual context to construct their learning so video content is important. Students cannot learn with all the bells and whistles it needs simplicity at times….

I’m a big fan of AI, especially for short clips. Even with longer ones, I’d love some help from AI. Plus, after AI finishes, you can add your own personal touch to it without having to release the full AI version. As an amateur, I could even learn a lot from AI. Sometimes I don’t edit videos because I just don’t have the time. Having the option to use AI would be awesome! You can’t go wrong with options.
