I never knew how to classify my preferences in music. As someone who grew up in the late 2000s I started listening to mainstream pop around 2008-2009. I love the sound effect used in older songs but I’ve never know what to call it. I just call it “that late 2000s auto tune sound). Examples of songs include Whatcha Say-Jason Derulo, Club Can’t Handle Me- Flo Rida, Down-Jay Sean, Beautiful-Akon. Newer pop just doesn’t sound as good to me but I’ve started expanding my musical tastes. Just discovered Alan Walker last year and he’s now one my favorites. Examples of some amazing songs to me are Faded-Alan Walker, Concrete Angel-Gareth Emery/Christina Novelli, Hero-Afrojack/David Guetta, Blackout-Breathe Carolina.

I love most types of music and was a dj 50 years ago. I started on a pirate station with no format playing Joan Baez , Chamber Brothers , Lead Zeppelin , and others. I am now getting into newer music like EDM and its sub genres. Enjoyed your video and hope to post some of my music soon.

My favorite genres in that term are Big Beat, Acid House, Acid Techno, Tech House and Psytrance and my favorite artists are The Prodigy, Fatboy Slim, Charlotte de Witte, DJ Pierre, Carl Cox, Basement Jaxx, Armand Van Helden and Darude.

Infected mushroom introduced me to psytrance, dubstep, and the whole wide world of EDM. To this day I have never heard an artist that sounds like IM, and they are absolutely my favorite EDM team. But since discovering them, ive grown a much wider appreciation for all types of electronic music. Finally learned to let go of my prog/jazz/metal elitism. Ended up on this video after reading a reddit thread about why EDM is not the same as electronic dance music. Which doesnt make any damn sense. Like, what does EDM stand for, if not danceable electronic music?

hahahaha omg EDM literally stands for "Electronic Dance Music." That's really funny. 😂 I think a lot of the confusion comes from when Dance music really got infused with mainstream pop music in the mid-2010's with artists like Zedd, Calvin Harris, etc and some people who love a certain genre of music HATE when pop gets thrown into the mix so they get really protective. However, one of the things I love most about Pop music is that it CAN be so versatile and influenced by multiple genres and sub-genres. I think that's a really unique quality but I understand why people don't like it as well. I'm really happy EDM kinda opened your world so to speak. I admit that I can get stuck in my own little music world too and don't branch out as much as I should. hahaha 😅 I think everyone can be like that, I just take issue when people think their favorite type of music is the ONLY GOOD TYPE of music. lol Everyone's musical tastes are different and that's absolutely ok. 😁💗

@@JonathanMillerMusic Yeah, I can understand where they were coming from. Probably learned to associate the abbreviation "EDM" with mainstream pop, and thus started to consider it as its own genre. Even though its such a ridiculously wide ranging description I dont see how you could possibly assign it to its own style lol. But I can totally understand when someone mis-labels a band I like/dislike as the wrong thing and getting upset. But yeah, there is definitely a ton of artist I dislike for unknown, or superficial reasons. Ive found that you really have to give a lot of new music a number of chances before it starts to click with you. There are tons of albums I disliked upon hearing the first time, and then learned to love when I listened a couple more times, and really paid attention to everything going on musically. Ive found that I can really love literally any genre of music if I find the right artist that clicks with me. A lot of the stuff I like is definitely and acquired taste though lol.

oh I thought edm was a sub-genre for artist like Guetta, Deadmaus, Tiesto, etc. that type of sound. Edm just seems that. I would never call Underground Resistance, Ace of Base, or even Daft Punk edm. I would call them by their respective sub-genres of techno. That just seems weird considering those artist were (and are still) around before people started calling them edm. Edm is a modern electronic sound. Say edm to someone and people will think of modern artists from the past 10 years. I don't know, maybe your right and i'm just a drunk 40 year old old school techno head out of the loop? Lol! Cheers.

No. EDM is a separate "style" of dance music that started to go out of style around 2013. "Deep House" is not EDM. Id does not mean nay kind of dance music made electronically. "EDM" was popular from about 2006 - 2013. By 2013 it was all sounding the same and promoters were charging too much and the DJs were being paid too much and it pretty much caved-in and then you ended up with people like that marshmello person. You are grouping people like Louie Vega and Kerri Chandler (who are artists) with utterly horrible trash like Martin Garrix and Hardwell etc. This sound is way over. Techno, house, tech house, and nu-disco are very much in-vogue now and people like Charlotte De Witte (techno), Camelphat (tech house) and Adam Beyer (techno) and many others are headlining. A few of the EDM DJs are still around but it's mostly dying out. Please update. No I will not subscribe. You have no idea what you are talking about when it comes to dance music.
