Edmunds travels to the Pacific Northwest to test-drive the all-new 2020 Ford Explorer, the all-new sixth generation of this popular family SUV. There's a lot to examine here because this is a comprehensive redesign that includes a switch back to rear-wheel drive, an enlarged interior, improved tech features and no less than four available powertrains - one of which is a new hybrid.
This new Explorer does not disappoint on any number of levels. Compared to last year, the new rear-drive chassis represents a big step forward in stability and ride comfort. The roomy new interior is comfortable and spacious, and, despite a few minor quibbles with interior materials, we found it to be an enjoyable road-trip machine. Its base 2.3-liter engine is perfectly adequate, and the hybrid is both smooth-driving and capable. Yes, even the hybrid can venture off-road and tow a boat as well as the rest of them. The new Explorer is better in almost every way, but the price can get expensive if you get too enthusiastic with the extensive options sheet.
About the Ford Explorer
The new 2020 Ford Explorer is redesigned from the ground up. It boasts a new rear-wheel-drive platform, a larger cabin and new driver safety features.
The base 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder develops more power than last year and comes standard on the base, XLT and Limited trims. At the top of the line, you'll find the sport-minded ST and the Platinum. A gutsy new turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 powers both, but the ST's is tuned to produce even more power and torque. Also interesting is the new Limited Hybrid, which promises respectable power and high fuel economy for an SUV.
We're also impressed by the new safety features. Every Explorer comes with the Co-Pilot360 suite, which includes blind-spot monitoring, lane departure warning, lane keeping assist, and pre-collision warning. A more robust version of the system is optional on the next trim level up, meaning that even modestly priced Explorers can be equipped with the full complement of driving aids.
The sixth-generation Explorer looks to be an exciting new chapter for the venerable SUV, and one that might shake up the midsize three-row segment. It still faces strong competition from the Chevrolet Traverse, Honda Pilot, Kia Telluride, and Toyota Highlander, but overall we think the Explorer will be a top model you'll want to check out this year.
Ford Explorer Models
The 2020 Ford Explorer is a three-row midsize SUV with seating for seven, or six if you opt for the second-row captain's chairs. The base model is well-equipped and comes with a solid number of safety and convenience features for a wallet-friendly price.
Next up is the Explorer Limited, which adds leather and most of the XLT's optional extras. A Limited Hybrid is also available. Finally, the ST adds a high-output V6 and performance upgrades, and the luxurious Platinum comes with (almost) all the bells and whistles the Explorer offers.
The high-octane Ford Explorer ST unleashes the fury with a turbocharged 3.0-liter V6 (400 hp, 415 lb-ft), 20-inch wheels and a sport-tuned suspension. It also adds special styling cues, the Trailer Tow package (optional on XLT and Limited models), an auto-dimming exterior mirror on the driver's side, a digital instrument panel, sport front seats, automated parallel and perpendicular parking, and reverse automatic emergency braking.
At the top of the Explorer hierarchy is the luxe Explorer Platinum. It has the same engine as the ST but with a lower power output (365 hp, 380 lb-ft). You also get adaptive headlights, unique taillights, a two-piece sunroof (optional on the XLT and the Limited), leather-wrapped interior trim, and upgraded leather upholstery.

If you drive a turbo car, putting premium is definitely worth it. Coming from a guy that used regular for almost 5 years, I immediately noticed a satisfying boost of power with premium after the second tank.

I want to love this Explorer. Been extremely happy since 2002 with 5 consecutive Ford cars and trucks, no issues on any of them ( 2002 escape, 2006 explorer, 2010 f150, 2011 mustang gt and 2013 edge) The exterior styling is a hit, but the interior feels and looks underwhelming compared to the Telluride and Palissade I test drove on the same day. Also, I felt the steering had a weird feel to it at low speeds. But the biggest draw back is the 2.3 turbo. The nice salesman that took me on a test drive told me at one point to set it on sport mode and do a hard launch to show me the power; there is so much lag at take off that it feels like the truck is about to stall. Once that lag is gone, the truck does launch like a bat out of hell. It’s just a weird feeling. Call me old fashion, but I enjoy the linear feeling of non turbo v6 . Did not make my decision , still pondering and going to give the Honda passport a try before making my final decision ( I don’t really need the 3rd row, but do appreciate the overall size of available storage when in 2 row seating configuration)

Still not a big fan of the face, but I haven't seen it in real life yet. I love that the base engine is competitive with top engines the competition offers and even happier that it's RWD and offers a hybrid. I look forward to some comparisons.

Having seen the 2020 Explorer at an auto show. I found it to be greatly improved over the model it's replacing both inside and out. Great body lines. I found the front to be attractive. Slopping rear roofline. I'm a big fan of the ST. Looking forward to a test drive. Intererior was comfortable, with a luxury feel and loads of technology available. I should add the engine choices with hybrid technology is ahead of other similar SUV in this class.

I went and test drove one of these today and was really impressed by it!! I drove a limited model that stickers for right under 50000 but was listed for 48500! Anyway my thoughts 1 The ride is really good and we hit some roads that have uneveness and pot holes and the suspension soaked that up! Really good ride! The interior is better than i thought and looks really nice! Safety this thing has a tony of safey a list so long i am not going to name all that! Finally the B&O sound system blows away any system in any car under 60000 and is even better than the Burmester in Mercedes!! I cranked The lithium station on Satellite radio and was blown away then switched to the Hits station and Billie Eilish Bad Guy playing this system produces strong tight bass with clear mids and highs!! The Salesman agreed!! My thought yeah probably gonna buy i reallly like it!!!!

For those still bemoaning the demise of Ford's sedans (and I understand that sentiment), the new Explorer at least indicates that the company hasn't been asleep at the switch in broadening the appeal of their SUV's. The new Explorer has much to recommend it. There is, however, one issue that deserves to be explored. I'm a fan of turbocharged 4 bangers in the 2.0-2.5L displacement category. I've been driving such vehicles since the '80's (Saabs) and I have a 2.0L turbo in my GTI. Furthermore, I seriously considered a Mustang last year with the same 2.3L Ecosport engine and 10 speed transmission. It was very impressive both in terms of acceleration and (with optional suspension upgrades) in terms of handling. All in all I found it to be a reasonable alternative to some European sports coupes. Having said that, however, a Mustang coupe loaded with fuel, and passengers weighs under 4000 lbs. A loaded Explorer is over 2.5 tons! Ford has apparently done a fine job in terms of maximizing the performance with the 2.3L turbo engine in the Explorer but I'm skeptical about the stress it's called upon to endure and the resulting impact on durability. If the 2.3L turbo were meant to be mainly a fleet model or a base engine aimed only at budget shoppers it would be one thing. But the Explorer is in a category competing with a number of vehicles that offer standard or optional naturally aspirated V6's. And the vast majority of Explorers in both the XLT and Limited trims will come with the 2.3L engine. Upgrading to a V6 or a hybrid power train pushes the MSRP to well over $50,000; in some trim combinations to over $60K. Those who purchase the new Explorer with the base engine will have to believe it's adequate in terms of performance and longevity. Any problems that arise will be down the road. And perhaps Ford has managed to deal with the fact that an engine is heavily stressed in a large, heavy vehicle. But it's something to think about.

it’s price that differentiates these SUV’s. I’ve recently test driven both the Palisade and the Platinum Explorer 2020. Cheap headliner in the Hyundai and funky mount under the bumper (looks after market) tow hitch! WTH The Palisade also lagged in transmission shifting when I attempted to accelerate quickly. Local dealers are charging 5k premium due to popularity, which then makes the prices comparable. So I’m the proud new owner of a 2020 Explorer Platinum! I actually put them side by side on the lot and looked at them both inside and out. Yes, I was that customer!

I’m very excited about the new Explorer! Looks great and that 400 HP EcoBoost is going to be great. On a side note; if you’re going to complain about the interior quality and use the Telluride (which I love) as a comparison you should probably use a picture of an actual Telluride. 😂

Most people don't realize the little gap in the front dashboard is easier to take off & on for service access (less chance of damaging). Everyone uses plastic and the area where it is hard it's because it's made more durable (you see in the future). The higher cost is because RWD is more expensive to make but they are more durable, tow better, and better performance (that's why European Luxury cars are RWD). You lose a little room in the third row because it's RWD. The Kia Telluride is roomier, but not as powerful (you mind as well as buy a minivan).

Nice review! I finally bought a platinum and a big part was the 365hp/380fp engine, with 10 speed transmission. Didn't want all black interior (Sport has only black), and for me the power is FAR more than I need, and a 5Star tune kit can get it well above a Sport. Love all the layout, fit, trim, and for me, it's one of the nicest looking SUVs, inside and out, that I've seen. Lincoln equivalent was 13k higher price for little gain. Ecoboost gives me 19.3 average, not babying it either. At first I thought I'd hate that big screen but bought it at a dealer 150 miles from home, and by the time I got home, I love it, and still do. I can easily glance and see lots of info, large size images/fonts. If it were tucked down lower, you'd have to take your eyes more off the road to see it. Ram also has a nice display better integrated into the panel. The 360 "overhead" image is fantastic for parking, etc but image could've been bigger. Hood prop is "old school" but I don't work on my cars, so doesn't matter how the hood stays open. Very quiet, love the handling, looks, ergonomics, color (silver spruce metallic). It does a good job of speed limit sign recognition and has intelligent cruise that's great. Surprisingly good off-roadability and comes with self-sealing tires! Lots of "stuff" but I'm not a techie guy and it is intuitive, so fast learning curve. So yeah, $58k is what I paid, but looked at lots of other similar ones (drove a Range Rover Sport too....not for me), and I truly still love driving my car! Yes, it's a "Ford" but after driving it, they're blurring the lines between them and Lincoln. If you need the "fancy car brand to impress" then I guess it wouldn't be a contender.....just one guy's opinion, FWIW but I think it's a great all around vehicle and no regrets at all buying it (Lots, better than 2019's)

Looking at the Telluride, I see that Kia made it taller in the back and a wee bit wider than the Explorer. Ford needs to make the third row 'special', like in the Telluride, with USB ports, dual cupholders, etc. This should show up in the 2021 refresh. Otherwise, not bad. I'd take this up a rough road vs a Telluride, cuz it actually happens a more true 4WD system.

The new Ford Explorer doesn't meet nearly what it should considering it's a full re design. Once again Ford falls short. You shouldn't have to spend 50k+ to get a decent interior. It's interior is not as nice as other competitors and it's engines are not very well engineered resulting in bad MPG. If a 6 cylinder from a competitor does as good in MPG as a Ford 4 cylinder you know somethings wrong.

This newest generation has a nicer look than the current 2019. The current 2019 Explorer is too bubbly, while the 2020 has perfect aerodynamics and straight angles of a true SUV. I'm also happy to see they went back to traditional RWD. Ford might have decided on this design due to the feedback of the current generation Mustang. The previous Mustang was too bubbly with all of its flares and curves, while the current Mustang has a good combination of straight angles and aerodynamics.

Đẹp hơn so với 2019 , nhưng model 2020 lại đáng tiếc là nóc mui phần sau lại thấp xuống làm cho đầu người hàng ghế thứ 3 gần chạm nốc mui xe ?!

Great masculine stance on the exterior, Dashboard has a cheap look to it which is a shame considering what Ford has achieved in the power-train options available.

I am on my 3rd Explorer (1994, 1998, 2005) and have not found another suv with the tight turning radius of each of my Explorers. One thing that these videos fail to show is how small of an area the 2020 can turn in so I can consider my 4th Ford.
