We think the Kia Telluride is the best midsize SUV on sale today, but the Ford Explorer and the Hyundai Palisade would like to say otherwise. We brought the three of them together and put them through our expert and exhaustive rating process and then sat down to talk it out. Will the Telluride remain the leader, or will the stylish Palisade or all-new Explorer take the top spot?
2020 Hyundai Palisade
Of the many choices for midsize SUVs, the all-new 2020 Hyundai Palisade has a ton of potential to be a top pick. Our current front-runner is the Kia Telluride, which shares a lot of its basic framework and engine with the Palisade. These two midsize SUVs are similar enough for us to say the decision will come down to preference, with the Palisade being more luxurious and the Telluride having more attitude.
Outside of personality, both the Palisade and the Telluride hit all the right spots when it comes to a family-friendly SUV. There is plenty of space for adults throughout, cargo space is generous even behind the third row, ride and seat comfort are praiseworthy, and the V6 engine does an excellent job of moving all of this around with ease. You can also rest easy with a long list of advanced safety features and the industry's most generous warranty coverage.
Whether you're looking at the well-equipped yet affordable base SE trim or the positively luxurious Limited model, the 2020 Hyundai Palisade should be on your short list of midsize three-row SUVs.

2020 Kia Telluride
The Telluride, an all-new three-row midsize SUV, is now Kia's largest vehicle and about the same size as a Honda Pilot. It can seat up to eight passengers and offers a maximum of 87 cubic feet of cargo capacity. A 291-horsepower V6 is standard, as are plenty of advanced driver safety features. The interior design is upscale, and Kia is also offering some family-focused features such as an available driver intercom system. Another draw is the Telluride's bold styling, a rarity in the class.
Even better, Kia has thoughtfully executed just about every aspect of the vehicle. It drives well, has plenty of utility and pleasant passenger space, and offers up just about all the features we expect from this class of vehicle. In higher trim levels, it becomes an even more appealing near-luxury choice, delivering a premium experience. If you're shopping for a three-row SUV, Kia's new Telluride is one of the top models to check out.

2020 Ford Explorer
Now entering its sixth generation, the 2020 Ford Explorer represents a complete rethink of this three-row family SUV. Early Explorers were built on truck frames and were primarily driven by the rear wheels, and the outgoing model employed a front-wheel-drive layout and car-like unibody construction.
The all-new 2020 model combines the best elements of each. It returns to a rear-wheel-drive layout, but its body retains unibody construction. This detail isn't obvious at first because the new Explorer uses familiar styling cues that give it a strong family resemblance. These outward clues only hint at the transformative changes that lie hidden beneath the sheet metal.
The new 2020 Ford Explorer rides, handles and accommodates passengers much better than the one it replaces, and it is dynamically superior to its crossover competition. But it can get expensive in a hurry, and the interior materials don't quite match the price. Overall, the Explorer merits close consideration. But you should also check out other three-row SUV standouts such as the Honda Pilot and the Kia Telluride.

Ford dominates the segment because the explorer is always the sales leader. Period. Ford sold 31,000 explorers in september. Compared to 6,000 for the palisade, this ain't even on America's radar, no matter how much journalists like it. Lol
@wind7sailor
@wind7sailor 4 жыл бұрын
@@PCSPITTER4NY did you notice that April, May, and June sales where each month Explorer sales were 8000 to 9000 fewer car sales than 2018 sale in these 3 months. Did you also notice no sales figures for July and August then suddenly 31000 for September? If that 31000 is July's, August's and September's sales figures combined, that would mean an average of fewer than 11000 sales for each month. That would be even less than 13000 average from April through June. Someone is biting into these lost Ford sales. If the Ford Explorer works for you buy it and you might get some great incentives as Ford has to fight to get back some of their lost sales this year. Based on all listed sales the Explorer sales figures are way down in 2019.

I think the better response would be to come MORE warm and welcoming. Really play up Honda reliability and create an atmosphere that you would want to come back to for service for years to come. Sure their vehicle might not be up to specs, but the Pilot is still a very good choice, and if I have a good experience at the dealer, no telling what my final decision would be. Of course, if the Telluride is THAT much better a vehicle. Still, sounds like that salesmen needs an attitude adjustment!

Their "pilot" has reached the end of it's life cycle and it severely outdated. They knew that their Korean friends would crush them and even Ford can stomp a pilot all day. -\ Zephyrus /- How’d you gather from my very detailed comment the only reason I prefer other companies is because of Hyundai being located in South Korea? I literally stated some of the reasons why such as inferior engineering, dependability, lack of great styling, originality and innovation. It has literally nothing to do with where the brand is located. The Chevrolet Tahoe is gorgeous inside and out especially in top trim. The features offered, refinement, capability, space, dependability and power are also a few pros of purchasing a new Premier trim Chevrolet Tahoe. The Chevrolet Tahoe will both effortlessly out-perform and out style a Hyundai Palisade for the same money. You’re delusional.

-\ Zephyrus /- You’re a brainwashed fool. How are they decreasing in reliability? Idk, you’d have to ask them why and how. But they definitely are decreasing. Perhaps all of those failing engines amongst other things are catching up with the Koreans. www.autoguide.com/auto-news/2019/02/top-10-most-dependable-automakers-of-2019-j-d-power.html How is their engineering poor? Lol. Well maybe it’s their self destructing engines that catch fire in brand new Hyundai products that’s the reason why, engines which were built in-house by Hyundai Motors btw which they’re under a class action lawsuit for. Maybe not the same money but not far from it and worth the difference in cash. A top of the line Tahoe Premier is $6k and GM is offering over $9,000 in discounts on a new 2019 Tahoe. A top of the line Palisade is nearing $50k itself and is much weaker, less capable vehicle. GM’s V8 engines are definitely refined and the same goes for their 10-speed auto transmission that’s in the Tahoe. You have internet access, do you use it for any other purpose other than being a brainwashed Hyundai/KIA fanboy impressed by their surface beauty? Apparently not. Bad materials? What “bad materials” are inside the Chevrolet Tahoe Premier? You mean the same plastics that are found in the less capable Hyundai? You’re a hypocrite and delusional Korean fanboy. Lol. You sound ridiculous.

I think folks are neglecting the S of SUV. The basic premise that gets lost here is Sport = fun, exciting, performance. I think comfort, tech, and big performance is what Ford was shooting for. The ST is the choice and very few cars compare under $80k. Yes you can haul people cargo and trailers but when on the road driving to work every day the Ford is certainly more fun and confident. All these picks are second to larger 3rd row vehicles and minivans if you care to stretch your legs, haul a bunch of suitcases and kids. A team in Florida has the ST running sub 5 second 60s and impressive quarter mile runs. I don't see anyone taking either of those imports to a track or strip. For goodness sake, the Ford ST comes with a track day experience package. Just my thought...

I had an explorer, and yes it’s a great suv; but the price is way over inflated compared to what you get with Kia and Hyundai . American suv should be expensive for over seas , and not for Americans. After all, that’s why we buy South Korean, because it’s cheaper, and truthfully just as reliable as an American suv. American car companies should be loyal to their own, and stop passing the cost to us. I stopped being loyal a long time ago when these scumbags took Obama’s bail out, and still over charged us. South Korea is changing the game, and the big three can stick it up their ass.

I was the 1st person at the dealer to pick up my 2020 Telluride and I have not been disappointed in any area. As they stated it is smooth, quiet and comfortable with plenty of power not to mention so many safety features and so many standards including such as leather seats. I drove from Michigan to Chicago, Niagra Falls then to Florida and it was so enjoyable to drive. I then went back to Michigan after setting up my own towing package with a 7 pin wire harness and wireless brake controller and hauled my 5000 lb camper down to Florida. I can assure you it pulled the camper with ease and can accelerate and gain speed in the mountain areas. The only issue was sway if you got up to 70mph with high winds but keeping it at 60mph with the winds it was fine. Soooooo happy with the vehicle and this comes from a 30 year Toyota employee who has owned and driven many Toyota trucks and SUV's over my career.

I hope that since Toyota is taking so incredibly long to bring the 2020 Highlander to market they're still working to play catch up with the more advanced features that these new vehicles have brought to the 3-row market. I hope this has put Honda on notice too and they will really bring a more advanced new Pilot and not just a refresh of their older present Pilot. Since I'm having to wait till mid-2020 to even see the new Highlander, it will be great to see what Honda is going to offer in 2021; I hope it's transcendent, not just last year's model reshaped and repackaged with small improvements.

"Honda declined"...I'm not surprised. I have looked at and tested the Palisade, the Explorer and the Pilot (along with the Audi Q7, Volvo XC90 and Jaguar F-Pace in the luxury segment) and I can tell you that the Palisade and Explorer (and I suspect the Telluride as it is the same platform as the Palisade) ALL ATE THE PILOT FOR LUNCH! The Pilot, even at the elite trim level, cannot hold a candle to the Palisade in regards to trim, quality of materials, features, technology, spacial layout and over all appearance (appearance is simply my opinion). We have owned 2 Honda Odysseys (2008 and 2014) and I will tell you first hand that Honda is not what it used to be in terms of quality and value. Looking at the Pilot Elite, I saw cheap materials throughout, dated technology and features (it had the same DVD entertainment system that was in our 2014 Odyssey Elite). and a cramped feeling. At the Elite trim level, Honda still had way to many incandescent bulbs (even one is too many at that price point), analog gauges in the dash and just an overall feel of desperately needing a refresh/update. Driving the pilot felt like driving the minivan....totally uninspired. I know this segment is not a performance segment, but come on...we did not want to move from a minivan to an SUV to feel like we were back in a minivan. Honda is coasting on their previous reputation of reliability. And that is all it has. Even the MDX (Pilots luxury TWIN) is WAY behind the times....and still quite homely... So, I am definitely not surprised that Honda refused to step up to its competitors in this review, makes total sense once you have personally experienced all of these vehicles. BTW, we replaced the Odyssey Touring Elite with the 2020 Palisade Limited AWD...and man is it STEPS above Honda.... For reference, we also have a 2018 Mercedes-Benz E300 and a 2010 Toyota FJ Cruiser 4X4, both of which were purchased new.

Oddly enough for this review my wife and I test all three multiple times. And in all actuality we were actually in the market to buy the explorer. However after all was said done after driving all three multiple times we settled on the palisade. My wife enjoyed the comfort of the palisade over the telluride and the price point for the explorer was ridiculous in comparison. Telluride felt tighter and more confined to us and the palisade felt roomier. And although telluride is extremely popular we really didn't like the knock off Range Rover look and the boxiness of it. All three are good vehicles but my wife was more into the Hyundai palisade. It has been the best and most favorite vehicle she's ever owned so far. I would say this though the neighbors four houses down also bought the palisade because it was primarily going to be the wife's vehicle. I do kind of have a thought although not proven that males tend to prefer the telluride and a lot of the ladies like the palisade. Once again no facts to stand behind that but kind of seems that way it is.

I just bought a 2020 Ford Explorer ST, used, for about $50k. I was cross shopping with the Telluride, Palisade, and Jeep Grand Cherokee L. I know when purchasing the Explorer ST, I was giving up quite a bit of refinement and especially interior quality. But, and this is a huge but, there are large limitations with the Telluride / Palisade driveline. Watch Driving Sports TV's excellent reviews for reference. They put money where they thought most people would notice, on the interior and refinement. Quite frankly, the Ford engine and trans (twin turbo V6 with 10 spd) just outright smokes anything in this segment. The ST accelerates and brakes about as hard as my stock C5 corvette for reference. And it's fun to drive. By comparison, Jeep does excellent awd / 4wd systems better than anything in the segment. If you want to go off road there is really only one choice. BUT, it's engines are too old. I have compared my ST against my brother's WK2 GC 3.6L V6 pretty well. I get better fuel economy while towing the exact same trailer as he does, yet have significantly more power/ torque and performance than the base hemi. Something to keep in mind. Buy a vehicle which is good at what you'll be using it for. I wanted a tough workhorse vehicle which could tow and be fun to drive and that's exactly what I got. Although an enthusiast and I've watched tons of reviews, in this case the Palisade and Telluride were not best for me. And I could easily tolerate the ST's negatives given it's huge positives. Hope that helps.

I'm a KIA fan. Loved my Optima SX and currently love our Stinger GT2. I was excited about the new Telluride, but now that they're out, I actually prefer a number of things about the Palisade. 1. I have never liked the iPad taped on the dash look. The Palisade handles that much better. I also like the look of the shifter. (I have heard it is slow, but haven't tried it yet) 2. As I get older, I think I would appreciate the power rear seats available in the Palisade. 3. Probably the biggest thing are the color choices. I don't like any of the KIA choices. To me they all look like dirt. I do like the dark blue offered by the Hyundai. My choice would be an AWD Palisade Limited in Moonlight Cloud. That may be what we replace our MKX with sometime in the future.

What shifter? The Palisade has buttons for shifting (and ironically not many other buttons) lol. Also I’m not sure how the handling between the two would be significantly different considering they literally share the same platform. Regardless, both are definitely winners. I went with the Telluride SX Prestige w/ Tow package primarily because I prefer the looks and a couple of other features (including the shifter and button layouts). I do agree with not being the biggest fan of the bolt-on iPad look, although at least Kia has addressed that for the ‘23 model’s interior (albeit while also inexplicably getting rid of the amber DRLs!). Speaking of the ‘23, the new Palisade’s redesigned front end is definitely a good looking improvement. Anyway, just splitting hairs. Again, both are winners

If comparing the top of the line versions between the Palisade and Teluraide.. I definitely would choose the Palisade over the Telluride. Looks can be subjective so one can like one over the other.. but in terms of features.. you get a bit more on the Palisade.. 2 extra speakers.. power folding third row seats and a full digital cluster.

I really enjoyed watching this video, especially the discussion on drivability and comfort. Were you able to test the ease of getting into the 3rd row in a Captain's chair setup with boosters in them? I'm thinking for someone who has a carseat and booster in the 2nd row, then needs to be able to get adults in the 3rd row. I'm unsure if you'd need to slide the seat forward, or can have access using the space between the Captain's chairs.

You absolutely would be served best in that regard by the Volkswagen champ. It’s universally recognized as the champ for getting in the 3rd row while the boosters seats occupy the second row.

The only version of the 2021 Explorer that really appealed to me was the ST, which I got for $56,080 sticker price & gives you 415 FT-LBS of torque, 21" black wheels and larger brakes, and nearly all the premium features . (Vertical screen is extra so I skipped that). If such a product was not available, I think I would get a used Sienna and be bored but save money. All these 260 ft-lb front wheel drive machines are just minivans in my view, but that's kind of what makes them great. The Kia is straight up amazing bang for buck and if you just want to get the job done, don't care about "vroom vroom" as my kids call it, there's almost no reason to get the Ford. It's nice they cut the price but the Ford is still only worth it if you want that ST perfoemance imho.

I extensively followed the telluride and palisade before they came out. I couldn't believe what kia and hyundai were doing and for how much or little it would cost. I initially thought the telluride looked better....until I saw a palisade in person. Fast forward, we bought a hyundai palisade. I cannot possibly say enough good things about it. 3 kids (1 with a carseat) myself and my wife fit perfectly in it. Although it's a lease, we'll be buying it out. It is practical, gorgeous and fun to drive. The only complaint? Mpg's lol. But, it does what we want so it's a negligible complaint. As for the strap problem for the backseats...add a longer tether. Not that complicated and an easy solution.

Huge factor not discussed or considered: Product quality. Do your due diligence and see the growing very high number of complaints to the NHTSA about the sub par windshields cracking and Kia not covering them by warranty and owners having to have their insurance pay for them...even multiple replacements to the same vehicles. Do a quick Google check on these windshields. Low initial price is nice, but sometimes you get what you pay for.
