As someone who normally rents a suburban when in the US (I’m in U.K.) Last month the Chevy wasn’t available so they gave me the expedition, found the luggage for 5 just fit and just but the comfort for 5 upfront was perfect. I drove 4620 miles from SFO via Montana, Wyoming, Colorado, Nevada and back up highway 1. The thing I noticed was the excellent fuel economy. The next time I’m lucky enough to visit your great country it’ll be the expedition again.

On our sequoia the second row all 3 seats move independently and it really comes in handy being able to slide those seats with a car seat hooked up. Great feature.

We had that one our piece of shit brand new vw atlas. That feature in theory is good unless it fails when you have your child in their car seat. Our child flung forward when for some reason the bench seat flung forward.
@markpitchford73752 жыл бұрын
That's a big deal with a 2nd row center console or a bench seat, but with the captains chairs, most kids just run through the middle to the rear seat without moving the 2nd row captains chairs. If adults have to get in the 3rd row occasionally with car seats in the second row, the expedition has a huge advantage.
@dongidongi2 жыл бұрын
@@markpitchford7375 True. My use case - we have 2 car seats on each of the window sides of the 2nd row bench. And we occasionally have a grandparent or someone needing to go to the 3rd row. So much easier with a seat that will move with a child seat installed.

As an F-150 owner, I have trouble imagining worse build quality in a modern vehicle. Reliability has been OK, I guess.
@richardwhite35212 жыл бұрын
@@plmn93 I’m sorry to hear that. There are some vehicles that have defects when built that cause problems, but you said reliability was ok, I’d compare the f150 to a similar dodge, Toyota, Nissan, from the same year and same trim level. Even GM, while generally a little bit ahead of ford with new technology, has weaker beds, and the technology inside is much more prone to failures. A great example was how quickly GM added wireless charging to their vehicles. You won’t find an original wireless charger from before 2018 in a GM vehicle that still works. They rushed the new feature out either before testing it or they cut corners to make it more affordable, and just like a cheap lightbulb, they’ve burnt out. Ford took their time, and once they introduced the same feature, it will charge through phone cases, and out of hundreds or thousands of vehicles, I haven’t seen one inoperable yet. Now..if we’re comparing Ford’s vehicles to Volvo, Mercedes, or Tesla…of course ford’s going to come up short. But in their class, imho, ford is top of the food chain.

Thank you for your excellent review. I own a 1999 Tahoe LS. I bought it brand new (ordered it from the factory). It’s been a great vehicle but is now 23 years old and has 236,500 miles on it. Because of its age and high mileage, I decided to rent an SUV for a recent 5,000 mile road trip with friends around the southwest starting in Denver and ending in Tucson. Hertz gave me a 2023 Ford Expedition. Wow, I was very impressed with its performance and gas mileage. I got between 19-24 mpg (amazing for a huge, full size SUV). It’s handling was solid, and responsive. It was very roomy with plenty of interior space for our luggage and gear. A very nice vehicle! I’m now looking to replace my old Tahoe, and may go with an Expedition. But before I make any purchase, I’d like to at least test drive a new Tahoe - though so far, there aren’t any in stock. Had one as a loaner while my truck was getting body work done and it sucked. Only has about 9k miles on it too. The trans seemed to always gear hunt on the highway, everytime you let off the throttle the torque converter wpuld unlock so as soon as you pushed it back down the rpms would go up and down. It always shocked me everytime I got out unless I grounded myself to the door jamb first. Went to pass a car on a 2 lane and there was a loud bang, a sound of pins and needles and the dash lit up like a Christmas tree with all kinds of transmission shift errors. Had to hit the brakes because it stopped accelerating all together and pull on to the shoulder until we were down to about 30mph and it sorted itself out. Needless to say passing a car on a 2 lane rd was no longer an option.Even though it was a long wheelbase version the second row seats had to be upright or the 3rd row wouldn't fold. A problem we never had on our sequoia, we could have the 2nd row reclined and the 3rd row would still fold. Also like the roll down glass on the sequoia. The steering was terrible too. Felt like it was spring loaded. Always wanted to snap back to the center. Changing lanes you had to hold on and center the wheel yourself because if you didn't it would snap to the center and the whole truck would swerve. When they came out I thought they were nice. We even considered looking at trading the sequoia for one but after driving it, it just made us appreciate the sequoia that much more. Aside from being a little faster and getting about 2mpg better on the highway, the sequoia was a much better vehicle. These new GMs look nice but their ridiculously overpriced.

While sitting on the third row seat the visibility towards the sides is very different. On the Expedition you have a much clearer view and feels good. Love both vehicles and I'm in the market for a full-size SUV to replace my 2008 Ford Expedition Limited with 206,000 hwy miles. To your point, I do not like that most manufacturers have added an unnecessary complication of something as basic as gear shifting? For the sake of emergency driving and as a former military person, the quickness of shifting from Reverse to Drive can be very important in high-stress situations and is far more seamless with the old shifters (either steering column or center console) as opposed to trying to navigate and commit to muscle memory these tiny new buttons and knobs. Hard to change old habits and that is definitely going to be an annoying change I'll have to adjust to. I wish they would provide the option to have the OLD standard shifters for all new SUV's. Otherwise both of these vehicles look amazing and I enjoyed your thorough review very much. Thanks for the level of detail you provided.

Both are very nice vehicles and both are way too expensive for a bunch of electrical gimmicks that do nothing to enhance the driving experience. I’ve owned Suburbans for 25 plus years and this particular Ford in the EXT version was extremely powerful and comfortable. The drawback is the hideous mileage the V-6 gets rolling down the roads at 80mph with a full compartment of people and junk. I fully expected 18-20 but only achieved 16. Next on my list was a 21’ Suburban for the next trip. 5.3 with the 10 speed. Very comfortable, very powerful and much better handling. The mileage was a complete surprise. 22 all day long on the same road with the same load. I really wanted to test the diesel but these don’t exist in rental fleets. I certainly couldn’t find one. At the end of the day, I opted for the 2020 suburban. I did give up some handling and electrical gimmicks that do nothing for me. It has a key, column shifter attached to the tried and true 6l80 and the damn engine doesn’t shut off when you stop. (Although the 21’ was seamless when it did turn off and on.) I also saved 15k over the 21’ model. I was fortunate to purchase one before the market went nuts along with the prices and lack of availability of anything. Given this I would probably go with the 20’ suburban again. I did have an opportunity to drive the diesel, which was somewhat disappointing from a power standpoint and the mileage was only 25 mpg, no load, sea level driving with freeway traffic. Certainly not worth the premium cost for diesel that should get at least 28 mpg. Considering it’s a relatively new platform and being a late model GM product, I was never a real consideration.

The ride in the new Tahoe, Yukon, and Cadillac versions are light years ahead of the old versions they replaced, as well as the new Lincoln and Ford Expedition models.... This review mentions it, but don't over look it without taking these 2 competitors out for a spin... Not even in the same league.... Hopefully Ford ups there came to bring more competition to the game, then we all win....

For large SUV's like these you want good visibility, this includes the visibility through your rear view mirrors. The Tahoe/Suburban has a small mirror even though the mirror housing is large. If you notice GM put a wide frame around the mirror to fill this gap - pointless and useless, they should have made the mirror bigger to fit the mirror housing. The Expedition on the other hand has a much larger mirror that gives you a better view of the vehicle and your surroundings. Better visibility makes for safer driving, and is even more important when hauling a trailer - bigger mirrors on the Expedition are better.

18:00 You mention that Expedition's soft seats do not cushion bumps. Late last year I drove cross country in Expedition, 3,000 miles in 4 days. At the end of the fourth day it was just was comfortable as on day 1, and I crossed some crappy roads. My impression from the Tahoe was that the side bolstering was too firm, and I did not understand why. In any case, I liked them both in my own trials, but I would give comfort to Expedition.

At these prices these vehicles better be uber reliable. All I know is my 2001 expedition still drives like the day I bought it new in 2000 and she has 300,000 miles. The Turbocharged engine on the Expedition does great towing our boat and other trailers, it has great torque - power - acceleration - fuel economy. It is an excellent power train for daily driving as well as for your weekend adventures hauling your boat or toys. I find the power and performance of the Expedition very satisfying for any application. It is quick to respond and makes this large SUV feel like a much smaller sports car. You cant compare the Ford EcoBoost engine with the Chevy Duramax because they are different categories - a diesel engine will always make more torque. But comparing the Ford EcoBoost engine vs. Chevy's 5.3 or 6.2, I think it feels stronger and much quicker to respond. Note: I've owned both Chevy Suburban with the 5.3 and Ford's Expedition with the EcoBoost Engine.
