Rule # 1: Don't mess with any character played by Edna May Oliver!

This must be the very Betsy Trotwood Dickens pictured.

One of the all time greats - to see her wrestle with Blanche Yurka (as Madame Defarge) in A Tale Of Two Cities, or talk of her pioneer husband in Drums Across The Mohawk or, at her best in this speech from David Copperfield, putting the odious Murdstones in their place is to see one of the great memsahibs ! My dear old and long dead mother was just like her and every bit as tough when roused ! Unique and superb intonation and delivery too as an actress - god bless you Edna May !

The greatest character actress of all time. Made any movie worth watching. Should have won the Oscar for Drums along the Mohawk.

She should have won an Oscar, but you can’t beat Hattie McDaniel in Gone With The Wind!

One word fabulous. She shined in every movie. Loved her in A tale of two Cities.

Despite their pretensions, you can almost SEE the guilt written all over the faces of the Murdstone siblings, the more Edna rebukes them! They know damned well that she's RIGHT, which for them is what really stings.

I suddenly had a strong desire to find E. M. Oliver's "Donkeys! Donkeys!" scene from Copperfield, but I can't find that clip posted anywhere. Maybe I'll have to watch the whole movie. I haven't seen it in many years, so I guess I'm due.

A tie between Edna and Maggie Smith, the latter opposite Dan Radcliffe as young David and Trevor Eve and Zoë Wanamaker as the Murdstones.

Brilliant delivery and timing. Out of humor and fascination, you want to follow her every word! Proud that she was a Massachusetts Gal

How I love her acting! I aspire to be like her in my golden years

We should all strive to be like her (in-character famous roles like this one) right now! And she died on her 59th birthday, sadly, never reaching those "Golden Years." Which is a good argument for us all to cultivate good character and moral courage such as Miss Oliver displays HERE -- because we never know, anymore than she did, when our lives might be cut short.
