Yamaha has just returned to the $1000-$2000 price range with three new drum sets. The Yamaha DTX6K-X, DTX6K2-X, and the DTX6K3-X. But can they compete with drums already out from Alesis, Roland, and 2Box?

Should that cost cutting include the module that costs almost $700? For a little more, Yamaha is providing an entire drum set. It shouldn't be this hard to comprehend.

i'm going to purchase the 1500 dollar one. Your point about the small pads is moot in my situation. i'm in Los Angeles. The cost of living here is ridiculous to say the least. If i could afford a mansion with its own guest house/studio, then i would agree with your point "go big or go home". But times are tough right now. For my living situation, income, and currently all rehearsal and recording studios are mainly shut down, the small compact feature is right up my alley. In my new home rec studio I need the job done, not comfort with large bells and whistles.

I hear you... for some weird reason all e-drum companies like to shoot themselves in the foot. GEWA is a crazy avanced drumset (and expensive), big pads, yet the sound sample quality is horrible; Roland never changed from that emulation-type samples over decades; ATV launched great drums with big pads and great natural sounding module, yet most complain sounds are way too dry and company seems to take forever to launch a new sound in their store; 2box have a good kit (though a bit too small) with good sound samples but all sound mono samples from 10yrs ago; Mimic Pro is great but you can buy 4 (!) laptops with SSD3 for the same price; Alesis just takes the middle ground in everything, not great in any particular feature and not the worst either; And the old Yamaha DTX had a good natural sounding to it but outdated, they've now really upgraded to 2020 standard, sounds gorgeous but launched with 7 and 8 inch pads! arrrrrgh! Too all e-drum companies out there: we couldn't make this stuff up!

I dont have much room for all my "stuff"- my dtx700 fit in fine without having to rejigger my layout- a bigger set wouldve been a real headache for me- size can be an important consideration for some, by going compact yamaha is giving themselves an edge over competition requiring larger floor space.

@@andreoproprio yeah such a shame really, i’m looking at going ATV with either a roland or yamaha module, or maybe alesis - just frustrating how slow the e-drum industry is advancing. I mean it’s not like 10” pads take up much room anyways since it would all fit on the same rack

Would love to see Yamaha update the dtx multi 12 sample pad. It’s very capable unit, it’s huge down side being it’s lack of memory (128mB) and the insane menu diving on very small screen. The pad is great as a mini kit, has nice expand ability with 3 zone snare/ride option and has some other crazy MIDI tricks up its sleeve.

Honest question, what's so bad about rubber pads? I've been a drummer for about 20 years (granted, it's been off and on) and I've played both mesh and rubber head electronic kits. I've played some mesh head kits that frankly sucked, and some rubber head kits that I actually enjoyed. I guess rubber is seen as "outdated" but other than that, why is mesh considered better? Maybe it's supposed to feel more realistic. I don't know, I guess I see it being kind of similar to digital pianos in the sense that, unless I was spending a few thousand dollars, I wouldn't really be looking for something that actually feels the same as the real instrument. I would just be looking for an enjoyable playing experience, and a sound that inspired me to play.

I have the DTX6K-X and the rubber pad only sounds good when you hit the very small center area of it. If you hit not close to the center, the sound is really quiet. The snare with TCS pad does not have this problem, you hit it near the edge and it still sounds good.

This sounds like a very balanced and thorough review. In your video on the five mistakes people make when buying a new kit, you invite people to ask your opinion, so if you don't mind, here goes! (there's a lot here, so no worries if you can't answer it all) I have about $1000 to spend (actually, £1000 but the face value of the kits are the same in the US and the UK) and am looking at the TD17KV and the DTX6K-X. Here, the KV is £200 more than the DTX. I think I know what's going to be more important for me but would love to hear your opinion. Crash Cymbals: As an amateur, I would just bash and choke these. I never thought I would need multi-zones. What do you think? Ride: Both have multi zones, Yamaha has three, and you said that Roland doesn't allow customisation of the bell? I would have thought that's one of the most important part of the ride but maybe not... Hi-hat: how do they compare, do you think? Snare: Having a zone for cross stick seems like it would help the unit to feel just that bit more acoustic... but no brush capability I bet!! :P The Roland has a button but am told you can switch between cross-stick and rim-shot with velocity thresholds. Of course a bigger snare sounds easier to hit, and better for positional sensing BUT the TD17 module doesn't support it.Speaking of which, does Yamaha support configuration based on velocity thresholds? Skins: The main benefit of the Roland is the mesh all-around. At least I've been told that I should consider it a huge benefit. I've hit a mesh pad in a shop but never owned one. Module: Seems that the Yamaha module has the best potential, with positional sensing, splitting, and other fancy stuff that I don't yet understand. I think the Roland equivalent comes with the TD27? There seems to be a split on the sound quality, as you said. Extras: I heard Yamaha used to only work with iOS devices, which I don't own.

I hope this means there is more to come. I have a DTX 950 kit that I even added some extra toms and cymbals to and I still love the hardware. The silicon beats mesh (for me) and the cymbals, while old, still hold up with today's tech. I've been bashing the hell out of that kit for almost a decade and everything still works and looks great. But the module has not held up. I think 10 years ago the sounds were good but even then some of the preset kits sounded cheesy. I primarily use 2 kits that I made myself that sound good all around but I'm out of options without importing sounds. After all this time playing with it I'm still confused by some of the functions. If they come out with a new flagship module that I can plug my existing pads and cymbals into I'll be a very, very happy boy.

So this review leaves out some really important things: The pads may be smaller, but they feel is leagues more realistic than Roland or Alesis. The ride cymbal has 3 zones, where as the roland TD17KV which is more expensive, only has two zones which means you have to program and play your bell on the edge or body of the cymbal, once again, for a lot more money... The module doesn't just sound amazing, but you can customize the sounds and effects, eq, compression etc, and through a chain just like you would in any upper level DAW (Logic, Ableton, or Pro Tools Etc). Roland and Alesis don't let you do nearly the amount of alterations to dial in the sounds to exactly what you want (in my experience having played all of these kits that are functionally similar in a similar price range). The rubber tom pads aren't just rubber. They're silicon with a Yamaha patented technology that recreates the rebound of actual drums. If you play it, this checks out. Also, the latency is better than the competitors in this price range so that makes the overall feel of this kit even more accurate to playing an acoustic kit. There are so many reasons why you should buy these kits if you're comparing them to others in 1-2k price range. I'm not a Yamaha rep but I would be in a heartbeat since I believe in their products over the overpriced competitors any day of the week.

Yeah, these look like kits that local music stores would have out on display and sell to electronic drum newbies or the parent shopping for a “electric kit” for their kid because they just walked in and did no research lol. I think nowadays, folks are looking for great feel of electronic drums more-so than sounds or cosmetic reasons (unless they need to not stand out performing with them). How well does the kit feel? Response? Trigger? Pad sizes? Will it pick up my ghost notes? Latency? Sounds can be upgraded with VSTs and the like, so it’s not even about that anymore. Module output features are important too for expanding your kit. But, without seeing a playing review, nothing really here that would sway me from choosing Roland kits in the same price range.

Glad to see yamaha is getting back into the edrum industry Gotta say I wish they would move on from the silicone pads As good as they feel at first The do break over time and the heads are not replaceable Thats the biggest advantage of mesh in my opinion (which is why I have since switched to a roland kit) but nonetheless I hope they do well The more competition the better

Should Yamaha offer mesh pads? Personally, I like the silicone pads and Roland's mesh pads about equally. And in my experience, the silicone pads are much more durable.

comparing the old DTX582K which I was considering & now discontinued, I'd have to go with the 6K3-X. I don't see what I'm getting for the extra $500 (in Canada). The 582K gave me a better snare & kick than I will get now for more money. Yeah, I know, I get a better control module, but really?

You would think that a company such as Yamaha which makes incredible Acoustic drums sets, out of this world grand and electric pianos with weighted keys, Kick butt Bass/Electric guitars, amplifiers, mic sets ect. that sound absolutely fantastic could present an E-drum kit that sounds amazing just like they used to with bigger pads better sounds and an updated look. I’d even consider it at like $2000 if they gave me at least a 12” snare and 10” toms, 10” crashes and maybe a 13” triple zone ride as long as the module sounds good and I know the older pads lasted years and years so no problems there, These look pretty much the same as the old DTX line with an updated module.........I’m not overly impressed compact kits are slowly dying out most people want bigger and more durable sets with good quality sounds unless they let me buy the module only, I think this was a bad move on Yamaha’s part and if I remember right some of the Roland, ATV, Jobeky and Alesis cymbals won’t work with Yamaha modules are manufacture Specific so if you do get your hands on the module you would have to buy their cymbals to use it which wouldn’t be the end of the world but still kinda puzzles me. I don’t think these will sell as good as they think they will if they offer the module alone then maybe? Otherwise they better have something up their sleeve in the way of a flagship model cuz I’m not impressed at the moment.

These new kits, especially the top of the line one are awesome, only shit drummers need a big snare or ride pad,I have heard the sounds from a Billy Hyde shop demo (Aussie music store) and this kit sounds great and I couldn’t hear any machine gunning. If only these were 1k cheaper, they would fly from the shelves and Yamaha would dominate the edrum market. Top of the line is 2.9k here in Australia, maybe 500 less? All in all ,a great kit.

Honestly these aren't priced competitively enough with Roland. Putting aside the the glaring issue of the pad sizes and the use of rubber toms, since Yamaha is choosing to stick by their silicone pads instead of moving to mesh this compounds that problem. The TCS pads are a very good alternative to mesh but I feel new buyers will see it and be like 'what? no mesh? for that price?' and immediately lose interest on that basis alone assuming that they feel the same as rubber, which they don't. On the flipside I think the new module sounds amazing especially considering its price range, but the pad configurations are overpriced in my opinion.
