There's actually a way to flip major or minor or vice versa. If you are layering samples, just look at the relative scale. If the sample is C Major, the other sample is F Minor, then transpose it down to A Minor. The relative minor of C Major. They are identical scales except for their tonal center. There shouldn't be any dissonance, but the tonal center might not feel right. It's music after all, so if it sounds good in your case then keep it.

@@31_7_Beatz Major and Minor scales are related. Every major scale has a minor scale that contains the exact same notes. So you can still use a major sample with a minor sample if you transpose it right. The circle of fifths chart shows the relationships between the outer ring of major and the inner ring of minor. I'm sure there are other charts that show it.

@@igneousfire9158 For minor, you will hear more tension and it'll sound darker. I think the notes will sound closer together. Especially in the chord progression, it will sound sad or dark. You can mostly pick it based on the vibe the sample gives off. I might also go into a spectral analyzer to see which chords are being played and how the chord is used. If the chord sounds final/resolved and it's a minor chord, then that tells me that it's that scale. I mostly use this for laying down 808s based on what chord is playing.

That's tougher becasue drums don't produce a single identifiable note, but more of a collection of overtones and harmonics. I don't necessarily tune my drums to a specific note, rather I move them around in pitch until I find one that hits the hardest!

3:52 nah. It's in the key of D minor. I work out the first 3 notes of both major and minor scales and if there's notes that don't fit the melody I know it's in a particular scale. Just from hearing this I can hear that it's in D Minor

Easiest thing to do is tap the tempo on your metronome in whatever DAW you're in. Just play the track and start tapping the tempo button 💪

It took me one time to figure it out from watching this video... I think there's some great tips in here but don't you need to also know major vs minor? For example you say the song is in the key of "Eb" but you don't specify between major and minor but Eb major and minor have 3 notes that are different so that would make a huge difference. Thanks again Ed!

For example, with loops that already have a marked scale, how can you transpose it to another scale? For example, I know that you can transpose C major samples 200 cents (i.e. number of semitones) up and you would be at D -Major. But how about, for example, with C minor [my idea would be: first pitch the sample in a parallel major key, so here E major... so just 3 semitones up and from there, so to speak, to D major, so "again 2 semitones Tones down.. in total the entire sample is only 1 semitone up.. is that right? BUT) and even harder how could you do it with a whole loop that is in C minor, for example? Is that totally possible, right?
