A thorough review, though I think it's a bit unfair. You are clearly not into the understated British style, where simple, flawlessly executed, long-lasting items are valued over the flashy, garish details of Italian, French, or other European houses. I generally prefer Italian design over British, just a you do, but that side, you glossed over the fact that these were rejected MTOs. The flaws you pointed out would most likely not be present on a pair you paid full price for. You can't get them for far less than retail and then judge then as if they were a first rate pair. This review just smacked a bit disingenuous to me.
@MisiuAcademy
@MisiuAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ben, this was not a rejected pair. After he ordered, the original client changed his size to UK 8. It’s not that I don’t understand British style, I am just not a huge fan. There’s nothing flawlessly executed on this pair at least and this is not the first time I see something like this on new pairs of EG. The bottom line for me is that I (key word, I not everyone) doesn’t like this British old fashioned aesthetic, the pricing is a too much and Kirby Allison’s review was exceptionally annoying. Thank you for watching and leaving a thorough comment and having a healthy discussion!

Great flippin’ video Kostas!! Don’t get the tattoo. And, in my opinion, don’t listen too closely to Mr. Allison. My experience w/ EG shoes has been very positive although the shoes I own are older. I don’t notice any flaws or imperfections. I would send the shoes back to EG documenting why you believe they are substandard. I would be surprised if they don’t reach out and make it right. Also, at least in the past, EG was the gold standard for RTO British shoes. It was not accident G&G worked there and likely learned the art and craft of fine shoe making. But, as you say, this is my opinion. Finally, at least for now, my favor comment: “I feel like I’m back in Sparta…” Take good care and thanks again for an honest, no holds barred review.

Sorry but I think your far too tough on Edward Green! You should review a company like Church’s shoes which is a true rip off with shoes and boots that should be priced around the Loake or Barker price range in terms of quality. I think Loake is actually better than Church’s particularly the 1880 range. They are truly a “brand” that trades off the name of its past glories.
@MisiuAcademy
@MisiuAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Hi Ian, I think church’s are rubbish, and I would never spend money to buy them and just review them. I didn’t have a great experience with loake 1880, I think you can do better overall. In any case, I still think the EG shoes are not worth the full price, but this particular pair was far from acceptable. I have reached out to them but they stopped replying to me.

Edward Green makes one shoe I really like - the Chelsea (classic cap-toe oxford). In terms of aesthetics, to me it the Goldilocks of oxfords. The perfect balance of not being too aggressive and not too conservative. Of course, I'm sure the shoe is still not quite worth the amount EG charges.

@@MisiuAcademy I would like to understand more. By quality, do you mean craftsmanship, materials, design...?
@MisiuAcademy
@MisiuAcademy 2 жыл бұрын
Design is quite subjective so not so much. If you look for something classic and contemporary for example, Edward green might be perfect for you, even more if it fits you well. However for $1400 which was about the price of this model, the leather was not as good, the craftsmanship was lacking (misaligned holes, medallion etc). For a connoisseur, the construction matters even if it doesn’t really have an impact on them. This is a shoe made by machine, while others in the same price range are made purely by hand. In other words, when people have this amount of money they usually want the best they can get. This one is great, but not the best. Sorry English is not my mother tongue I hope it makes sense. In the end, If you are an average consumer that has the budget and likes how these look and fit, you will be happy.

@@MisiuAcademy seconds are usually stamped somewhere as seconds. Their customer service is OK, but that doesn’t surprise me when I am dropping a lot money on a pair of shoes. I believe they seriously need to up their game and do better in terms of QC. Otherwise, their good days are already behind them. People have become very well educated on what a quality pair of shoes should look like at different price points. I am a big fan of EG (or maybe I once was) but now I find G&G and StC do much better in terms of QC on all fronts for pretty much the same price

BTW, I also have Paolo Scarfora shoes and they are really unmatchable! I also saw you reviewing Stefano Bemer and Meccariello Shoes and I look forward to getting them. BTW, I do have Bontoni shoes. Hi Stanley, if you go through the comments you will find out that my shoes ended up being factory seconds. I will update as soon as I can. Love your honesty. I've spent countless hours on weekends perusing through shoe shops in London-holding shoes,feeling the leather and weight, trying them on sometimes,etc. Edward Green, G&G, Crocketts, Church, Lobb, Fosters, Cleverly, Trickers, Cheaney, Loake, Grensons, Weston,etc. I'm fast coming to the conclusion that ,as you mentioned in a previous video, if you want a 'good' shoe and 'value' in the factory made- ready to wear space.....i'd say go no higher than mainline Crocketts or Trickers. You get diminishing returns on anything more expensive than that.

Hello, thanks for watching. It turned out these shoes were seconds and I got scammed in a way. However you are wrong that expensive shoes aren’t worth it. Since this video, I studied bespoke shoemaking. A real, handmade shoe will take 60-80 hours to make, not counting the materials. Imagine your wages in a modern country try for two weeks and things make more sense. But still, it is indeed a luxury for many people. You can get a very nice shoe for 1/4-1/5 of the price these days 😊

@@MisiuAcademy Yes, the costs are high, but hardly objectively worth it. As you said, for half of that price we can have extremely similar shoes. It doesn't matte how much you spend on making shoes, it's important the result to be noticeable for the wearer. And that's hardly the case after about 6-700 Euros. Price increase from there just improves some tiny aspects that not everybody cares about. I'm not saying really expensive shoes or garments aren't good, I'm saying they aren't as good as they are expensive. I like my Bontonis more than Santonis but they're objectively aren't two times better, which is the case with price.

The packaging is not what a full price pair of Edward Greens come with. The full priced pairs come in a bright green branded box with two shoebags. This is the kind of packaging they do for their factory seconds (I know because I own a pair of their factory seconds). Check the inside of the shoes near the sizing info for a "B" written somewhere on one of the shoes. This stands for "B-Grade", EGs name for factory seconds. On my shoes, it is in the right shoe above the sizing info. If there is one, these are factory seconds regardless of what you were told by the seller. It seems pretty likely to me, if the above is true, that the seller bought a pair of B-Grades and lied to you about the origin of these shoes. I can't say for sure because I have no idea how they were advertised to you, but it would certainly make a lot more sense for these to be factory seconds than a pair of MTOs being delivered in a B-Grade box, without shoe bags, and with obvious quality control issues that that customer never reported to Edward Green. Also, Kirby Allison is no doubt pretentious and annoying with a boring sense of style as well as a penchant for stupid grandiose statements, but that all has absolutely nothing to do with these shoes or the company that made them. It's a little unprofessional to include in a product review like this. To be fair to you though, you do say at the end that you are a bit biased when it comes to this company which I suppose is an admission that people should take this review with a grain of salt.

First of all, I do agree with the Kirby Allison comment but then again he has 2-300000 people subscribed and the power to influence a lot of them. The way he is defending or promoting is company is just a plain sellout, which I understand it’s his business. I also mentioned that this is my opinion and nobody should take this like my word is law obviously. I said that if you like the aesthetics, these are decent shoes. Regardless if these shoes end up B Grades or whatever, my opinion on EG would not change. They are overpriced and I can buy better. Plus, it’s not my taste or style which is strictly personal, but applicable to people that prefer the souther European style aesthetically. Now, this is not the first time I see EG pushing out shoes not worthy of being firsts. For example check out this post: instagram.com/p/CK5dCJHlU1i/? The more I dig around, the more I realize that the seller might have indeed lied to me even though he fiercely refuses it and just says he used a previous box or something. I mean, imagine buying such shoes and not getting shoe bags. I currently cannot check if the shoes have the B indication because all my belongings are packed as I’m moving to Italy (I’m studying bespoke shoemaking) but I will put it on the list. I have no problem about the monetary issue and the seller not accepting a return in this case as I cannot be bothered arguing about it with him or my bank but the fact is that EG for me (keyword: me) does not give me the fizz, any warm feeling or sense of excitement. I look for that in my shoes these days. Thanks for reading and having a healthy discussion with me, but also giving me some tips on what to look at. Best, Kostas

@@MisiuAcademy Yeah, I mean I really do not like Kirby Allison. I don't have a problem with you saying bad things about him, it just doesn't seem to fit with the product review purpose of the video and makes the review seem perhaps more unfair or biased than you mean it to be. When it comes to aesthetics, you are well within your rights to say everything you said in the video. I have no problems with any of that. I personally am not a fan of southern European style shoes, but I know when I come to your channel that you are so I would never hold that against you. The points you are making about quality control issues though I think are not really properly substantiated enough to make as strong a statement as you are making about it. Everything I have heard about Edward Green from people who have bought from them is that if your shoe has any quality control issues they will bend over backward to fix it. That's one of the defining features of Edward Green that so many people talk about, their excellent customer service. This youtuber (kzbin.info/www/bejne/bKKyn558lrugoKc) for instance, bought a pair of EGs from a third party severely discounted because they were missing the sock liner and Edward Green sent him a replacement sock liner for free and walked him through the process of gluing it in place. Now the youtuber here is also gushing about EGs too much in a way that I am sure you would find annoying because he obviously isn't really aware of what else is out there in high end shoes but the point is that his customer service experience is real and it really is exceptional. This is one of the reasons their shoes are so expensive. I'm certainly not going to try and argue that EGs are good "value for money" but I also wouldn't call them overpriced. They are not really trying to be anything other than a very luxe very traditional English factory made shoe and they are charging a hefty price for it, but you also know that you will be taken care of with them if something goes wrong. I will share my experience with EG quickly as an end point. I bought a pair of B-Grade Galways in Rosewood Country Calf which had a spot on the upper where it looked like acetone or some other industrial solvent had splashed on it and removed some of the patina. I sent an email similar to the above youtuber to their customer support about what could be done to blend this and they put me in touch with someone who gave me a really exceptional lesson on the basics of how to develop a similar patina in that spot and what could be done with the shoe creams I already owned. Today I can't even tell where the spot was on them any more. This is not to say that EG are perfect, but they really do care about their customers and put a lot of effort into that part of their business. I would bet if you asked their customer service team about the scuffing at the heels of your shoes they would at least try to come up with a solution to make it less noticeable even though you bought them through a third party and they really don't have any responsibility to do so. Anyway, take care. Good luck with the channel. I have been subscribed for probably 6 months and have no intention of unsubscribing.

Thank you for sharing all this. I will certainly sit down and read it carefully after I am done packing. You have convinced me to at least contact EG directly and see what they have to say or if they can shed some light on the matter, but I will be the first one to admit and amend any issues that get clarified in my written review. Thank you very much!

Really appreciate the honest review. In essence: Edward Greens are way overpriced. Quality issues at this price point is simply unacceptable. Sadly, it seems like Edward Green has fallen behind the competition, and is only living on its past merits. As for Kirby Allison raving about the quality of EG, his so-called "reviews" are biased at best, more resembling a paid advertisement.

thanks for watching. Many people trying to tell me these are factory seconds and you can spot them by the B in the lining. Mine have no B. I initially reached out to EG who was helpful and very responsive. However I tried to follow up this week and received no response back. If this was a second, I would amend certain remarks I made, but my overall opinion wouldn’t change. I think I’ll just move on.

@@MisiuAcademy they dont ‘always’ have a B in the window of the quarter linings, but they do ‘always’ come in that colour box. Firsts will never leave the factory in that darker green box, its a factory shop box 100% Im afraid. Where did you buy them and how much did YOU pay?

Like I mentioned, I am still awaiting a reply from Edward Green themselves. I bought them from a small shop. When I get closure from EG I will either make a follow up video or update the written review. Seconds on not, it doesn’t change my sentiment about them costing too much.

@@MisiuAcademy no, obviously we all have our own opinions on costs and value, which is fair enough. Factory shop prices are hugely discounted though. You seem to have the correct information on the box label, so it doesnt appear to have been swapped out. The price youre quoting in your video is for shell cordovan, mink suede is not so much, this is not an MTO pair, it looks quite standard on its standard shape and fitting. By the way, its the travel slipper sole units only that are manufactured in Spain

Thanks for the extra info, I appreciate. Sorry English is not my native tongue, I probably meant to say that a standard pair of EG where I live coats around 1350-1450$ usd. But in any case that’s why I am chasing this to find out if I got scammed and maybe warn someone else, etc. thanks for the tips!
