@very droll Before Snowden's leaks, we "knew" the US spied on everyone, and we were fairly sure it also spied on its own citizens, but aside from a few things here and there, there was little proof, and we didn't know the methods. Snowden leaked the actual NSA documents that proved what that organisation was doing, how it was doing it, and to what extent. This is the difference between knowing your neighbour is dealing drugs because you often see random people dropping by and they seem to own fancy stuff that unemployed people usually don't, and knowing what drugs they're dealing, who they're selling it to, and how they make it, because you saw into their garage and all the stuff was there.

I always used the same password my entire life on everything, and thought it was strong enough. Most of the "use mixed case and nonstandard characters" type things some sites force on you exist because, back in the day, the biggest threat was literally a human sitting down at your machine (in a company office or university, say) and guessing your password. Those types were harder to crack that way. The problem in modern environments is that such rules both reduce the number of possible combinations available, making it easier for a computer to brute force, but they're much harder for the human to remember, so only the easier to remember combinations get used, making lists an easy way to skip even having to do that. The way the modern world works, at least for your personal stuff on your home PC, if you're forced to do that, you're actually best advised to use truly random combinations, and write them down in a notebook or something kept by your PC. ( be sensible, there are obvious exceptions.) Note that i say on paper by your pc, not On your pc. The former is helpful, the latter self defeating. Pass phrases are, of course, better still when available. However, to make it easier on your poor brain, you can still do the above with the less important ones as, ideally, you'll use entirely different phrases for each site. In practice, i use one (terrible) password for all the unimportant crap, and unique, much better, passwords for anything important (such as my bank account.)

The best advice I've heard is to use really long complicated passwords, use different ones for every site you use, and just write them down. The people who are stealing passwords are unlikely to be the same people who could steal things from your desk so it's OK to write your passwords down.
