Heres my take: I feel like the sand is acting as a non-newtonian fluid, which is a medium that acts more like a solid the faster you push something through it and, conversely, behaves more like a fluid the slower. Picture sticking your finger in some sand as opposed to punching it. The arrow is shot at a much slower speed than a bullet, and is very streamlined, so it stands to reason that it would pass through the sandbag more successfully. Also, Yay Gasparito! I love that dude :)
@perseusrex6144 жыл бұрын
The reason the xbow goes through sand so well, is that the shaft does not get gripped by the sand to slow it down, like most other non-live test media does. In deer and predators xbow pass clean through most of the time. Xbows are phenomenal penetrators and would go much much further if a tip is made that expands the hole just a bit more than the diameter of the shaft, or if the shaft is lubed. Lube your shafts gents.

As well as being a well engineered Crossbow, it comes with so many extras, scope, arrows, quiver, broadheads, carry strap and case. Awesome value
@MB-bg1ek4 жыл бұрын
The arrow going through the sandbag can only be because of the behaviour of sand when hit. The arrow has a lot less energy than a bullet, so the sand has enough time to move out of the way and act like a fluid. If a bullet hits, there is so much pressure in such a short time, that the sand can't move out of the way and the bullet stops. Thtat's the only explanation i can imagine right now....

The arrow has penetrating power more than a regular bullet which hits with more blunt force. Think pushing a flattened stick through sand compared to a stick with a point it'll go through easier. But the rate at which it fires does come into account
@crazycranners4 жыл бұрын
That and the bullet tends to be a softer metal than bolt tips, the bullet deforms and spreads out, further dissipating the energy into the sand...

The science behind sand bag: It's like a silly putty effect. Arrow has less energy so it moves through it smoothly, while bullets have lot of energy, so the bullet and the sand destroy each other. Just like silly putty. It's soft but if you throw it hard, it breaks. Same reason why some vests are bulletproof but not stab proof,

The bullet basically dumps most of its energy into the sand whereas the arrow does not flatten on impact. Its slower speed may be an advantage here and if it has the right amount of kinetic energy it can force the sand grains aside because of the shape of the arrow head.

I'm glad you said something about cracked carbon arrows. Years ago my dad and a few of his buddies went elk hunting when carbon fiber first came out for arrows and there wasnt any safety precautions or the check and bend it logo on carbon arrows. They were target practicing up in the mountains and one his friends arrows went through the target and hit a boulder. Next shot with that arrow it had exploded under under the stress from being shot. Went to the ER and the dr had pulled out over 180 pieces of carbon fiber pieces out if his hand. Took my dad years to finally shoot carbon fiber after he seen what happened to his buddies hand, granted it's hard to find aluminum arrows anymore.

Arrows go less energy so can go through it smoothly, while bullets came with very high energy, so the bullet and the armor, helmets destroy each other. If it's soft but if you throw it hard, it breaks. Thats why bulletproof vests are only bulletproof but not with knife, arrows and other melee weaponry.

11:20 "How is that possible??" I'm almost certain all arrows wobble in the air after they are shot from a bow or crossbow, and even wobbles after it hits a target. Considering an arrow is lighter and slower than most bullets, and theoretically shouldn't penetrate a bag of sand more than a bullet, the wobbling of the arrow is likely driving it deeper through the sand

No, technically they are arrows. A true bolt from medieval crossbows in medieval times were far shorter with no vanes/feathers to steer flight. Here in the United States, there is a little bit of conflict between die-hard bow hunters and those hunters that want to use crossbows. Some people who use a normal (vertical) bow, look down upon crossbows and do not consider them real "archery" equipment and instead want to classify them as some kind of gun or rifle, and thusly make it where we can't hunt with crossbows during "archery" deer season and we'd have to wait for the slightly later "rifle" season if we wanted to use our crossbows--which would be bad for us, because deer become a lot harder to hunt once they start hearing rifle shots in the woods. So a lot of newbies to crossbows want to be "hip" and give the name "bolt" to modern crossbows because it makes them sound more special. But here in the U.S. that trend can be a bad thing for people who want to hunt with crossbows.. so once ya learn the politics of the issue and if you agree that crossbows should be able to be classified as an archery-style weapon, then you'd best call them arrows.
@DarkOm3ga4 жыл бұрын
Actually they are arrows, because they use fins to help in flight. Bolts use a weighted front and they are half the length of the arrow used in this video. Plus bolts are ancient.
@Rashed12554 жыл бұрын
DarkUnholy I thought the point of a bolt was to be shorter than an arrow but I guess not. Maybe the definition should be changed so it’s easier to differentiate between bow and crossbow ammo.

Regarding the sand bag it may be the same effect a pool of water has on higher velocity projectiles. Water stops high velocity projectiles but the lower velocity ones keep going and do not lose all the energy at entry of the water. Sorta like diving, the water can feel like a pillow or concrete depending on how fast you are traveling and the entry angle.

I think bullets & arrows/bolts are more like chalk & cheese than you'd expect. Bullets rely more on aw power blunt force & some are designed to tumble, which is very effective against soft flesh but arrows/bolts are more like a dagger(or stilletto in the case of target points) thrust. If you were to thrust a dagger into sand you'd get some resistance but you'd not not expect it to stop until it hit something harder. Greatr video & fabulous crossbow. Thanks guys.
