Question: Have frontier router/ switch. Disable WiFi on it. Fios goes into it. Then “Switch” --as you call it --then connects to Eero pro 6 router. From the existing “switch” I have one going to video cameras separate system And a wired connection going to office. In the office I have a Eero (earlier version). I connected this to Ethernet connection. Should I have connected this from my eero 6 pro instead of switch to get full band width? Or does it matter. ? Originally I would have thought the FIOS tech would have connected to Eero from ISP then to existing router/switch to use additional port.s He said it didn’t matter. Also, this begs the question of If I connect wired in the office could I set it up as it’s own network. Thanks in advance.

New sub here. Good vids. I love that you’re just giving needed information and not trying to dazzle everyone with your knowledge and IT jargon. I just got Mediacom xtream (1gb) internet service a few weeks ago and am using their er combo for now. I was going to go with a netgear ($430)nighthawk ax6000 dual band m/r combo with 4 out going ports on board m/r combo or two eero 6 pro routers and a multi port switch. I need the extra ports and my home is under 2000Sq feet and yes we stream a lot I want to go with the nighthawk For simplicity,convenience and cost savings. If I go with the two eeros pro 6’ routers a doc 3.1 modem and a switch I’m up to at least $600. Is it really worth it to spend the extra 200+$$.
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! I appreciate it! It really depends on you, if you're fine with the nighthawk range which is probably ok for a 2000 sq. ft. Home then it's not worth the extra $200 for the eero Pro 6. There are 2 advantages of 2 eero Pro 6 routers in comparison to the nighthawk which both might be useless to you. 1. It's a tri band router meaning it can handle more wifi devices. The difference becomes noticeable with more wifi devices. 2. It will have more wifi coverage and range compared to the nighthawk which again might be useless to you. Hope this helps!

Glad I found your video. Getting the Eero Pro 6 3-pack to expand and separate my WiFi coverage. I have my own TP-LINK access points linked via Cat 6 for my main LAN, but needed something for my Ring cameras in areas where running cat 6 would be difficult to install a new TP-LINK access point. The Eero mesh solves that. I plan to have one act as a new separate network router just for Ring and other IoT devices, and use the 2 others to connect wirelessly to the new router (one outside on the front porch, one outside on the back porch each enclosed in weather proof PVC utility enclosures. Since I have power at each porch, that should work. I did not know you could daisy chain the Eeros via ethernet. I may look into doing that if/when I get around to replacing my TP-LINK system to those areas where I have cat 6 is run. I'm hoping I do not have too much interference having 2 separate WiFi networks. Thanks again for explaining the options. That really helped.

Great video! I was wondering, if you're linking routers to modems to other routers, does the ethernet speed get divided up every time? Say I have a modem connected to another modem that's connected to the router. If I have an xbox connected to modem 1, and a ps4 connected to modem 2 (while modem 2 is connected to modem 1), will my speed be slower on my ps4 than on my xbox??
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Not quite sure I understand, is there any reason you have 2 modems? Are you paying 2 subscription services through your Internet Service Provider? If so, are you using a load balancing router? Ethernet doesn't slow down assuming it's not going through a HUB. Typically routers and switches support Full Duplex, so they're not really sharing anything. I'm assuming you're asking how things slow down and when this happens. I'm assuming you have 1 modem and mesh wifi system. Speeds typically slow down when the routers (comprising the mesh system) connect to each other via wireless. In this case with a modem connected to the main eero Pro 6 which is then connected to another eero Pro 6 wirelessly (can slow down based on your internet speeds but since this is a triband mesh wifi, it won't slow down as much or anything at all), this is Option #4. If you hook them up to each other via ethernet (Option #3), let's say you have your modem going to your main eero Pro 6 and another ethernet from this main eero Pro 6 to a secondary eero Pro 6, this is now the best possible network. If you have your PS4 connected to the main eero Pro 6 and your Xbox connected to your secondary eero Pro 6. There should be no difference in speed between the consoles since they are all connected through ethernet to each other (Assuming the length of the ethernet cable doesn't surprass 100 meters). Bottom Line: When using ethernet, things typically access everything at the best possible speeds regardless of which router or point they are connected to. Now if you're using the PS4 and XBOX at the same time, now you're sharing your modem speeds. So if you're paying for the 400Mbps service for example, all the devices are sharing this assuming they are connected online. Hope this helps!

No problem! Plug it in directly to any eero. If you are running out of ports to connect it to, get an unmanaged switch (links on description section), plug the eero to that to expand your ethernet ports. Plug it into the unmanaged switch.

Wonderful! One question: Just replaced my Eero Pro with the Eero Pro 6 - so should I re-use the old Eero Pro (and beacons) or get newer generation satellites?
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! Up to you, they will work just fine however the eero pro doesn't support wifi 6. If the internet speeds near the eero Pro beacon are "less" important than just stick with what you have. If you want the absolute best from the eero Pro 6, then replace them all. Again it really depends on your situation. I would probably try it with what you have and if it works sufficiently, then you're good to go.

The eero app itself will not let you do that, it’s not designed to work with another brand router on the same network. You can try to see if the settings on the netgear allow it to be a switch or an access point but it’s a hit or miss which is why I don’t recommend it.

Great video and easy to follow! I have 4 Eero Pro 6E routers. Can I do a wired backhaul to connect all 4 routers (modem - main router - switch - router - router - router)?

Thanks and yes that will work. The three routers after the main one will be acting as extenders.

When you say the speed will be cut in half with the dual band, is that for the devices using the dual band extender or will it bring down the whole system? I was thinking of getting the dual bands for the garage since it would only need a couple of low usage devices: opener, smart lock, etc
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
I meant just for devices connecting to the dual band extender, if you connect to the main eero pro 6 you will get full speeds. So your garage stuff should be fine with half the speeds I would imagine

I believe so but it would need to be connected via Ethernet and you need to enable bridge mode in the eero app

if you have a pro eero wifi router and eero mesh wifi router and a Pro 6 wifi router, which one should you use first? to your cable modem via ethernet? and you use the remaining routers as extenders or use the remining routers as another router.

Great explanation. I have the eero Pro 6 (3-pack). It hooked up to the Spectrum cable modem. The wired connection gives me 400mbps (my Spectrum plan). However, the wireless connection gives me around 90mbps all around the house. Wonder why? Spectrum technician blames it on the eero. Thanks...

Make sure you are connecting with a 5GHz device. Try updating the firmware and restarting all the eero's

Can I connect two or three eeros directly to the modem/router? Putting the modem router in bridge mode? Or the eeros needs to be connected between them...?
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
No, when you put the modem router combo in bridge mode, you would connect the eero router to it. From the eero's other ethernet port you would go to the other eero's. Or you can get a switch and connect the main eero router to the switch, from that switch you can go to all other eero's.

Omg thank you for making this video, this is super helpful! Dumb question, my ISP provides a modem and router 2 in 1 combined device. There are 4 ports at the back back or the modem /router. Can I just connect all 3 eero devices to the modem/router to link them all? Or I could only link them via an unmanaged switch? Sorry if this has been answered before already. Thank you
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
No problem. No, that can't be done. One eero connects to the modem, the other eeros either connect to the main eero, either going through each other or through a switch. Modem > eero > 2nd eero > 3rd eero Or Modem > eero > switch > other eeros You would need to put your modem/router in bridge mode or disable the router of your modem/router combo

Option 4 could I use n ethernet cable running for the router to my xbox? As its wireless at rhe mo but my main router is downstairs and can't run an ethernet cable to hook up all the routers but the one up stairs I want to connect to xbox swith ethernet cable straight to my second router can that be done?

Yes you can, just as a heads up the Xbox can only get net speeds as a fast as the fastest WiFi device that’s connected to the secondary eero.

How could we disable the router function? We are using fios combo g3100. Thanks for your advice!
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
I don't know the specifics for that model but typically there is a sticker that specifies an Admin URL, IP address or a local site you can access with your browser to then go and find the "disable router" or "enable bridge" (something of that nature) mode which should disable the router portion of your modem. You can also call the Verizon FIOS tech support to find out how to disable it.

Hi, first time here and man you good. Thank you for the breakdown explanation for the rookies like me. Now, you explained option 4 router to router wired but let’s say I do connect tv wired to secondary router, can I connect anything else wirelessly as well? How many more devices in average? Thank you
@landpet
@landpet 2 жыл бұрын
Thanks! You can connect devices both wired and wirelessly, one doesn't effect the other in terms of connections. However the more devices you connect (that are in use at the same time), the more your speeds will slow down. The theoretical limit is 253 devices however it may have trouble with that many connections. I've never had any issues and I usually have 60+ devices connected.

Thanks very helpful! If I have a combo modem/router (WiFi disabled) and plug the Eero 6 Pro in, can I still use the remaining Ethernet ports on the modem/router and run a switch off of it, or does it have to be off the Eero router?
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
You're welcome! I would advise against it. If you need ports, grab an unmanaged switch. Verify the router portion of the modem is disabled or in bridge mode, wifi off may not be the same thing as off or bridge mode.

I can not get my wireless eero extender to pair with main unit. The blue light flashs but won't pair . I rebooted the main unit and the extender. I typed in the extender serial number. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Thanks
@landpet
@landpet 3 жыл бұрын
Ok I've seen this before, this is possibly because it was originally ona network and it needs to be removed from tat network before you try connecting it again. Also be sure to do a factory reset on the extender. Worse case scenario, delete your network, factory reset everything (which will erase everything so backup what needs to be backed up prior) and add it

Can I put the modem to an unmanaged switch then to the 3 eero pro units in parallel? This is just because I am having to route the wires myself and I’m doing in the walls and would just work better in my specific setup

AWESOME! Presentation! I am glad I discovered your "show and demonstrate by example" method. I noticed at about 7:mins and 10 seconds into the presentation you show a 8 port D Link unmanaged switch. I was trying to see the specs on the devices you were working with to compare a new setup I am considering but I don't see that 8 Port D-Link Unmanaged Switch on Amazon or Best Buy. Can you give me the model number please. Thank you very much for your tutorial. I have subscribed and will continue to watch and like your videos.
@landpet
@landpet Жыл бұрын
Thanks! I don't have the model number since I no longer have that particular switch. It's just a basic unmanaged 8 port gigabit switch. You can pick up any brand unmanaged gigabit switch and it would be fine. To be more specific, unlike the mesh system like eero in this case where all nodes have to be eero's for them to work together. You can use any brand switch you want with any mesh system you want. Just look for an unmanaged switch that handles at least gigabit speeds and you should be good to go. There should be a link in the description section. Thanks for watching!
