It feels kinda refreshing to see EFAP making fun of the stupid things that other creators say and do... Returning to the roots can be a good thing sometimes.

@Deus Ex Machina Yeah. I didn't mind their breakdowns but I'll be honest; a lot of the content EFAP has covered I have had little interest in(Mando) or plan to watch after I check it out(Resident Evil 4 remake). But really, these bad video essays deserve to be called out and also spark a discussion. Because Cosmonaut especially baffles me with how confusing his videos are and how he lacks self-awareness. I'd genuinely want to speak to him and ask him about what he values as good because I really don't know. Mauler and the EFAP crew I get a sense of what they value, and while I may not agree at times, at least that is something.

I equally enjoy both, but for very different reasons. Analyzing stories is really enjoyable as an exercise, and plenty of great memes have come out of clowning on these absolutely awful stories. I also enjoy a lot of the suggestion they put forward, and it has inspired me to write my own sci-fi novel. However, this type of EFAP is also amazing purely for the clowning being turned up to 11.

The reason that I have been avoiding their breakdowns is because I haven't been watching these newer movies like Antman, Ms Marvel, Fury of the Gods, and Jurassic Park. Those are only fun for me when they're slapping a stupid video silly. Gosh, I wonder if it could have something to do with a fatigue of cinema going around.

The real reason you can't invade Australia is because it doesn't exist. Australia is not real. It’s a hoax, made for us to believe that Britain moved over their criminals to someplace. In reality, all these criminals were loaded off the ships into the waters, drowning before they could see land ever again. It’s a coverup for one of the greatest mass murders in history, made by one of the most prominent empires. Australia does not exist. All things you call “proof” are actually well fabricated lies and documents made by the leading governments of the world. Your Australian friends? They’re all actors and computer generated personas, part of the plot to trick the world. If you think you’ve ever been to Australia, you’re terribly wrong. The plane pilots are all in on this, and have in all actuality only flown you to islands close nearby - or in some cases, parts of South America, where they have cleared space and hired actors to act out as real Australians. Australia is one of the biggest hoaxes ever created, and you have all been tricked. Join the movement today, and make it known that they have been deceived. Make it known, that this has all just been a cover-up. The things these “Australian” says to be doing, all these swear words and actions based on alcoholism, MDMA and bad decisions, are all ways to distract you from the ugly truth that is one of the greatest genocides in history. 162,000 people was said to have been transported to this imaginary land during a mere 80 years, and they are all long dead by now. They never reached that promised land.

Well.. um.. there can the opposite to that, right? Chronological means the right order of events in time, not simply "timely". This felt like a classic EFAP. Not that I've disliked the recent EFAPS, but man this brought me back. Cosmonaut, I don't understand how folks follow him. I once did your experiment Mauler to a friend who liked him where I asked him to recount what one of his videos were and they couldn't. Whereas thank to your videos I could tell my friend where Cosmonaut said one thing and then contradicted himself(Space Wizards for children and yet griped about chopper sabers in Rebels). It's really hard to take anyone seriously when their standards are so all over the place, and in Phase four's situation, I believe he's only doing this because it's trendy. There's no acknowledgment that he was wrong or his views had changed. As for MovieBob, what else can I say? He's pathetic. A term I don't use lightly, but he really is. Someone who tries to sound smart but when you actually assess his words and contemplate, it falls apart. Like a bad fast talking salesman who also happens to be an awful person. All in all, I'm glad that EFAP encouraged me to be more critical about the content I consume and self-aware of my own biases/ consistent with my own standards. Like admitting that I liked John Wick 4 but recognize it isn't a very good movie.

@@SatanLiterally It's that case with all forms cultural systems: Those for democracy think their ideals will be represented. Those for communism think their community will hold the power. Those for capitalism think they'll be the ones with the bank. Those for socialism think they'll get easy jobs. Those for the different religions think they're chosen or blessed. Those that worship science think they're uniquely free of ignorance or bias. Those that doomsay about the environment think everyone else will suffer the change while they continue their own carbon footprint. Those that protest will never put in the work to make real change at the grass roots in a community. All these systems is, has always been, and will always be flawed and f*ck by people. None of them will ever be the final answer or solution. And they are just mechanisms for those in power to maintain control and fool you into thinking you mean anything. 2:25:00 I think Moriarty is definitely correct. In a sense, the theater has ruined the movie for Cosmo. He first experienced it in a crowded theater where people were hyped and screaming. He got that euphoric sensation of group excitement. With NWH, the actors were specifically told to give the moment a beat because people will cheer, but it also makes sense in the scene and works perfectly fine in private viewing. The scene, in this case, is strengthened by the pause and general sense of confusion and disappointment for the characters. He's just feeling like it's empty because he's associating it with the reaction around him the first time he saw it, rather experiencing it for himself.

While you follow the title character & his friends, you get glimpses and hear people talk about a demon lord and how the noble heroes are fighting him to save the world. And when he's defeated the characters say: "Oh hey, did ya hear? The demon lord is dead." "Really? That's neat." Yet despite that, the threat of the goblins is still taken seriously even though it's small compared to the demon lord.

On the topic of anime with small-scale stories besides big ones, my go-to is Overlord. The titular overlord has ultimate super-duper invincible levels of power and the show acknowledges that there's practically nothing which has a real chance of beating him. The way the stakes remain high is that a large portion of the show is dedicated to whoever he's invading at the time with his army of grotesque monsters. The Overlord will survive the battle with basically no issues. The Lizard-prince who's currently looking at an undead warrior the size of a house, well, his survival is still up in the air, but he's gotten forty minutes of screentime and a love interest since his tribe entered the story. And since the Overlord is the central thread of current events and the entire world necessarily revolves around his staggering power and whims, the secondary characters can get FUCKED UP without it derailing the plot *and they often do*, so enjoy them now - you might not get the chance to later.

@@HerohammerStudios We have an entire medium, namely super hero comic books, where "continuing on indefinitely" had been the core business model since the eighties. People don't remember what "Mid" is supposed to mean. Most people rate their movies on an American school grading system in that everything below a 60% is a "failure"...what's the point of the rest of the lower 59% then? This is why most rating sites give a 7/10 to something awhile saying it's "average"...7/10 is pretty high. 5....5 is average, 4 is below average and so on...but no one wants to give a movie a 5 and says it's "average" because it makes the overall scores look bad. In people's minds a 60 is the same as giving a D which is considered a failing grade. It's incredibly hard to convince people that 5/10 is NOT bad..it's average In end result of this is people putting movies like Godzilla: King of Monsters in the same category as Lord of the Rings. Nearly every movie is in the 7-10 range which inevitably ends up mixing average movies with good and great.

God the bigger stakes are actually the death of so many story lines where an author/writer literally hits a point where the stakes are so large and unfathomable that an audience literally doesn't care to think about it anymore. You should always have your audience on the edge of the seat with a bit of OH fuck! if the hero fails here than X is going to happen which means X will etc. When stakes get too big the writer(s) also forces themselves to one up each other in the next part. The biggest stakes should always be towards the finale of a story. Like LOTR ending where if Frodo fails than all the characters you love die and Sauron takes over the world. Simple to understand and easy to grasp. On the other we have marvel who are trying to get an audience to understand the stakes of an infinite multiverse. How is any audience supposed to grasp how bad an infinite multiverse dying is? Hell not even the writers can understand it. The fact that basic questions are just ignored by the writers is insane.

Having to go bigger in the sequel is one of the worst, most common, longest held opinions pervasive throughout the history of Hollywood. It's... WRONG. Write a great story and it doesn't matter how BIG it is. Post-Endgame was where it should have shrunk in scope and become much more personal and worldbuilding, resetting the stakes to gradually build back up to the next franchise climax, not have the end of ALL universes in half of the projects (and the rest merely threatening the end of just our lowly world).

I wanted to clarify something about Top Gun for EFAP, at 4:12:50 they're talking about the original and the sequel and how much they made respectively, and they mention that the sequel made a billion and they think that's effectively making more than the original did. That's not exactly true. Yes, it made more money by raw dollars, but its profitability is actually much lower than the original Top Gun. The original Top Gun cost $15 million to make, and it eventually made ~$357.5 Million at the box office, this is a revenue of 23.8 times its budget, in terms of cost:revenue the original is far more profitable, it was astronomically successful. Top Gun Maverick in comparison cost about $150 million to make, and it grossed about $1.49 Billion at the box office, which sounds incredible because that's a lot of money, and it is, HOWEVER, its revenue is only 9.9 times the cost of production, so it's profitability ratio is much lower than the original Top Gun. While yes, it made an obscene amount of money for any individual person, it and most other modern films when compared to the cost to make these films, are not anywhere close to being as massive of a success as films from a bygone era like the original Top Gun where the cost to make them is pennies compared to now. To put the difference into another perspective, Top Gun Maverick would have needed to make $3.57 billion to match the revenue ratio of the original Top Gun. I'm not trying to say Maverick was not hugely successful, I'm just trying to point out that one thing that's often forgotten in these discussions of profitability is the cost of production and by what order of magnitude its profit is over that budget. For another quick example, Joker cost $64 million to make, and at the box office it made $1.069 billion, which means Joker returned revenue equal to 16.7 times its budget. While Maverick made more in total revenue, Joker is much more profitable than Maverick.

Around the 35 minute mark when they talked about writers saying people want something new I’d love to show those writers isekai a lot of basically copy and paste but still make a characters it’s own character, to we’re the characters acknowledge it and the truck itself has become the meme but are still very popular and loved me included. Sometimes I just want new characters but same plot even tweaking it a little bit can make it feel different marvel used to make character development part of the story instead now it’s just how can we say the end of everything over and over and over and ect
@Avarn388
@Avarn388 Жыл бұрын
@Weston Owsley Indeed. But the thing is with Isekai, what really matters is the internal logic and consistency. Mushoku Tensei is a personal favorite Isekai of mine and it isn't doing anything original. Heck, it was the series canonically that had truck-kun appear but Mushoku Tensei also didn't neglect with Rudy and his past life. He was a man child and the story of MT very much is about someone being given a second chance/ a way to start over again. Combined with excellent animation, OST, and an incredible world and magic system, you got yourself a good series.
