When he said that "Marvel clapped back" I almost had a stroke. Does he think that episode was made and then released in a day in response to the criticisms? Does he think it was already made and/or they made a second version and were just sitting on it, a "break glass in case of" situation, then received the backlash and decided to release an "especially good" episode? Because that's what he makes it sound like, that's how he's framing it.

This is gonna sound really weird, and I'm curious as to how many people kinda agree with the statement I'm about to make, but after "watching" season 2 of Loki via watching a group of youtubers do a reaction series to it (in which they used _numerous_ clips from the series in a fairly coherent way), I actually kinda like season 2 of Loki? Now, don't get me wrong, the worldbuilding is _awful_ imo, and the logic of the entire show (this season included) seems confusing and nonsensical (at least to me). However, for some reason, I guess I was able to turn my brain off enough to really enjoy Loki seeming to act a _bit_ more like his old self (with him using his powers more and being cruel during the "Brad torture scene" as I call it), and I honestly kinda enjoyed seeing Loki basically become omnipotent at the end. Maybe I just feel like season 1 did Loki such injustice that I was glad to see season 2 treat him with seemingly much more respect (at least in the clips that I've seen). Also, does anyone else keep wanting to call Loki Season 2 "Loki 2?" I was trying to find those reaction videos from those youtubers I mentioned earlier, and I was so confused as to why they didn't have a playlist for "Loki 2" until I realized they naturally appended the six new videos to the end of the "Loki" playlist, lol.

That's not entirely accurate, a leitmotif is a melody or rhythm associated with a character, place, or idea that can be found in other music. The imperial March was initially used as a leitmotif for Vader specifically, Wagner's operas featured hundreds of leitmotifs to connect moments in the music to characters in the story

Also, leitmotifs are meant to be flexible, which is why they tend to be pretty simple. It's like how Team America had the "America, fuck yeah," arranged as the triumphant rock song, but at the low point it is re-arranged as a slow and depressing ballad. Imagine that but with a melody that can be fast, slow, quiet, loud, happy, and sad depending on the scene.

The fact that Strange(who we didn't even know he wasn't the Sorcerer Supreme at the time) didn't show up is a massive red flag. At least have the decency to say he's off world. Conveinent but not impossible. It just made Strange look like an idiot and all for what, because Strange is a white dude? "Half-baked" is an idea that isn't properly thought out. So a show might have a half-baked premise that doesn't work if you think about it too much. "Under-cooked" is something that was started and then served unfinished. So that would be a show that doesn't fully accomplish the things it set out to do. Ironically, I imagine that the writer of this article believes that using two different cooking metaphors in the same sentence was clever and artistic. I doubt they considered that it comes off more as confusing and redundant.

A little thing about the way that Hollywood produces movies. Yes, they work 12-16 hours a day, that's what they like to bring up. What they don't bring up is that a lot of that time is spent waiting, or taking mandatory breaks. Like, if you're working on audio or VFX, your manager will come in and be like "HEADPHONES OFF!! MANDATORY 15-MINUTE BREAK!!" and that happens every 45 minutes. So, for them, a 12-hour day is the equivalent of an 8-hour workday. It's why The Simpsons portrayed Teamsters as lazy because, if you're actually in the industry you'll be seeing a lot of film industry workers sitting around on break or waiting for their chance to do some work.

The only reason I’m curious about Echo is how much Disney seems to think it will fail. They confidently made Mermaid, Eternals, Loki, etc; and seemed to have no faith in Andor. To date their confidence in a property has been a kiss of death since at least 2021, their doubts about Echo are practically a recommendation.

Funnily enough, what he said about Marvel being its peak when it has brutal deaths and blood is partially true. After all, peak Marvel happened when we used to have the whole Stark family died brutally. - Howard got punched to death in the head by Bucky. - Maria got choked by Bucky. - Tony snapped which burned his whole body and caused his heart to shut down. But what made it good isn’t about the violence of Stark’s deaths. It’s about the implications and the emotional resonance that came from it. If Echo missed that point, then it’s not as “peak”.

@@nont18411 Right you are. Like the “Is CG bad” debate that comes up every while, I think the industry and its sycophants learned “graphic/grimdark/mature = quality” simply because some projects used their tool very well and it stuck. Like any tool of the trade, it’s a question of intentions and planning. A show like HOTD comes in for criticism as depicting a bunch of women in ghastly childbirth or sexual situations, but the choice was made to illustrate the real implications of a world with a self-reinforcing power imbalance, where women are expected to produce children and that very act makes them physically vulnerable and comes at greater toll, yet gives them unique power. Treating that subject with kids gloves when it’s central to the incentives of every character onscreen regardless of gender would sell it short. Meanwhile, if I am making a movie about a teen struggling to grow up without a mom who died in childbirth, I can show that resonate in their life without ever actually depicting that scene. There are no shortcuts to thinking through your goals and then choosing how best to execute them.

Yeah, it seems like he was a hardass and socially problematic, but that he took the company from bankruptcy to worldwide adoration while keeping an eye on the budgets and making sure project creatives had oversight. Once he got pushed out and Feige got complete control, it all started spiraling down the very overpriced commode.

3:07:28 Not quite explicitly "it was too goofy", but Deadpool 2 was rumored to have poor test screenings that had the audiences think some of Ryan Reynold's jokes fell rather flat, and they asked for more Cable, a more serious character in the film. I can't think of a different case where test audiences wanted to roll back the humor, but they're probably the reason why we're getting a Deadpool 3. I could very easily see Reynolds' influence only being checked by test audiences, rather than anyone else on set.

Some of the Marvel comics have gotten really meta, especially Defenders Beyond. That, however, obviously has nothing to do with the MCU.

That article blames Ike Perlmutter for every stupid decision and idea that was ever floated in the MCU. But look what happened to the franchise the moment he was removed. It seems more likely that they've reversed all the roles between Feige and Perlmutter to give Feige cover. Phase 4 and 5 have been a constant lesson in, "Figure out the worst thing possible to do, and somehow so something worse." It's like we expect 1 Cuil of writing, our worst fears can only manage 2 Cuils, but somehow they manage to abstract to 3.

I haven't bothered to watch the trailer because I won't be watching it, but I do disagree with your general sentiment about editors and have to assume you are younger than 30. Editing in the past decade + has largely been kinda awful. Fast-paced, no time to think editing is done a LOT to hide that things don't make sense or are stupid. You need time to digest information and contemporary editing is designed to obstruct this process to promote a base reaction to pure visuals and manipulative music. I find that often sound cues are nonsensical and lacking creativity. Bassy, oppressive, samey standard samples. Trailers are like bland sugar cookies cut into exactly the same shape depending on the movie genre.

Among my complaints are fast=bad because fast edits can be used to hide things (So I guess the editing in Everything Everywhere All At Once sucks?). And because I made all of these assumptions, I'm also assuming you're young. Dude, if you want to complain about trailers complain about trailers, but right now it just looks like you're belittling someone just to insert your rant in a place where it might not even belong. He never had a "general sentiment about editors" he had a singular sentiment about a single group of editors working hard to polish turds and make things look appealing, which op claims they succeeded in. As for you claiming you aren't trying to insult anyone, that's just stupid and as an autistic person I'm going to go ahead and say even extreme autism couldn't make you this socially backwards. As small a thing it is at the beginning. I prefer to think that a jingle is prerequisite on the purpose of a music piece, it's usually focused around advertising a product and getting it stuck in your head. For the short themes accompanied by logos in the beginning of films, or between programs, these are usually called idents. And then for musical pieces present throughout a film that correspond to a theme or mood, these would instead be called a leitmotif. All of these have the purpose to be a musical hook to catch your attention, and if they're short, then they're more generally called "musical stings". But jingle "stings" are primarily geared towards advertising.

6:28:52 Reposting my comment from the unlisted video: The "most important SW show Disney could release", you ask? There's only one correct answer: a show with Finn going on a vision quest guided by his latent Force sensitivity. He finds an ancient temple. There, he discovers that there is an SW multiverse, this universe isn't the mainline one, and through a mirror, he meets another version of himself from the mainline universe, where the Republic thrives, Luke reformed the Jedi order, and his mainline universe self was actually one of Luke's first Padawans and their Rey was the last Sith and the leader of the struggling Imperial Remnant. They discuss the differences between their universes, and then Mainline Finn teaches Sequel Finn the ways of the Force, so that he can go and create a new Jedi Order and help this universe. However, once Sequel Finn gets stronger with the Force, he's contacted by Mainline Universe Rey, who, after discovering his unrequited love for Sequel Rey, tries to seduce him to make him betray the location of the temple. Sequel Finn accidentally does so, and so she and her forces attack the temple in the Mainline Universe. Turns out, she knows that she's fighting a losing war, and she wants to move the Imperial Remnant over to the Sequel Universe and fill in the power vacuum. However, the two Finns work together, Sequel Finn resists her and the Dark Side, and in her hubris, she tries to cross over to the Sequel Universe anyway. Then, in the climax, it turns out she can't, because one can only communicate between universes but never cross them, so she disintegrates in the attempt. Steeled by the experience, Finn redoubles his efforts to become the foundation of the New Jedi Order, and the series ends with Mainline Luke showing up in the mirror, and offering to finish his training. Roll credits.

ROTJ definitely has its issues, and that mostly comes down to the ewoks. The Ewoks should have been using actual guns instead of bows and arrows if George wanted to sell the vietcong underdog theme better. It would have made more sense in the technologically advanced future of star wars that guns would be seen as antiquated and would have fit what they were going for while giving the ewoks a more plausible means to fight the empire. The Jabbas palace stuff isn't hard to understand. Luke tries the peaceful way first by bargaining with Jabba because he is trying to be more jedi like and there is no reason to rush in blind, risk lives, and make a enemy of a powerful crime syndicate when negotiating could work first. They then try the Leia plan to break Han out, which fails. This then necessitates Luke coming himself to get Han and Leia back. Meanwhile Lando and the R2 lightsaber idea are there as backup plans and fail-safes in case all that fails and they need to get Han back by force. He even offers Jabba one last chance to bargain, which he rejects, forcing Luke to use any means necessary to free his friends. ROTJ definitely has its issues, but most can be pointed at the Ewoks and the film was still a good send off to the original trilogy that had more good than bad.

I wonder if that guy is genuine. He might be. He looks so vacant and easily manipulatable, that I could believe that any, even the most miniscule amount of influence could just change his mind on a dime. He might not even have an opinion of his own. He just read the article, got influenced by it and jumped on the bandwagon. Then watches 1 episode of Loki and forgets everything that happened before it.

Budgets get absolutely consumed by incompetent, uncreative, lazy, cynical filmmakers and I don’t understand how SW Theory doesn’t get it… or perhaps he does and is in denial and wants to blame the lack of budget poured into the “better” series

This is a complete guess, but maybe it's because he doesn't want to call the more artistic writers and directors (who he knows the names of) out on being bad at their craft. But calling out some faceless company budgeting guys that he doesn't know? That's fine.

From his own explanation, he's basically just jealous Andor looked and felt like star wars visually, and the other shows don't. Like he legit feels more money woulda made Kenobi look better/more like star wars

Seems like Marvel was just lighting in a bottle. In compensation for getting lucky in the first half, the last few years have been the formula absolutely bollocking the later ones. The production philosophy was unstable and waiting to fail dismally.

Adapting godawful Bendis stories might have something to do with it. Feige is influenced by post-2000 Marvel comics. Turning their most popular female character into a lame one-dimensional Cartoon villain (while pushing a female character no one likes) because "the comics did it" is a sure fire way to fail.

04:12:00 i can kind of understand where the guy is coming from. Not the ... Ride or die for the MCU, but the love for it. The MCU was really special for me too. It was this huge event in my house. I had good times watching the movies in theaters with family, and then talking about it afterwards. But I can't ride for these movies just because my mom is a die hard comic nerd.

So Worf been knocked about to establish the baddie of the week is so well known, it's called "The Worf effect" To answer Mauler's question regarding Worf's having the most appearances or incursions... Technically the answer to that is Yes. there is a single episode "Parallels" where an actual incursion occurs after Worf starts bouncing between verses. As things get worse, Enterprise's start to appear from all these various verses and will completely fill up the universe with nothing but alternate versions of the Enterprise if they don't save the day.
