Interesting video, lots of info and food for thought. At 68 I think I might need to adjust a few things. For the record I liked English dub it made it easier to follow the physical demonstration you gave and with the students in the water. I don't speak Spanish, just English and Norwegian.

I would like to highlight one concern here Coach Rafa.... imagine a hand hold one support... and try to push body... the maximum movement will happen in one case only... if support will not move.... in this case the hand will not move.... the shoulder will move forward to direction of support.... Now let us convert this example to swimming.... the crawling hand should work almost same as the above mentioned example.... proper anchorage of arm will lead to maximize the shoulder moving forward and then the whole body will move forward... any slipping of arm will lead to useless crawling by arm... Great video. I was wondering if you could explain what the legs are supposed to be doing while the hips are rotating. I don't think we can achieve a proper "hip driven" stroke without coupling hip rotation with kicks? Thank you.

It doesn’t. That method is bolshet and its over rotating. All these methods are basic principles of freestyle “repackaging” differently.

I prefer your videos to be in Spanish, with sub titles rather than English dubbed over the Spanish. As for the hips being the drivers, land based sports that use rotation to generate energy are exact opposites of long axis swimming strokes. It is mechanically and physically impossible for the lower body to generate any rotational forces because there is NOTHING for the feet and lower body to anchor on to generate any force at all. Land sports generate their rotational forces either with feet at shoulder width apart like golf or a karate punch (check out Bruce Lee's 1 inch punch). With the batter, or a pitcher, they step into the action which generates the force. In all of these land based examples, the spiral goes from the feet through the hips, and out the finger tips to hit, throw, or swing. With swimming, we are pulling, not pushing or throwing. Without exception, any swimmer who is properly connected from finger tips to toes, the pulling arm is the anchor for generating the rotational energy. The shoulders rotate independently from each other, not as a unit like the hips do. The pulling arm starts the rotation, the down kick on the same side happens, and then the recover arm completes the body rotation. The rotation in swimming does 2 things. One is that it makes for a longer lever to apply to the pulling action, so you go from your spine to your finger tips rather than just from your shoulder. It also gets the top side shoulder out of the water for less drag. If you don't believe me, swim some catch up style freestyle. Every thing anchors on the pulling arm, and nothing comes up from the hips.

All the top elite coaches will tell you that there is shoulder driven freestyle and also HIP driven freestyle. The dry land examples are good for novices to comprehend what their hips are supposed to be doing horizontally in the water. People inherit shoulder issues when they only allow their shoulders to do all the work. If they allow their shoulders AND their hips to rotate in tandem, they can generate more power and then the speed naturally follows. But to imply that the hips are unimportant in the freestyle form is really incorrect, because the hips absolutely can help with the long axis strokes. 😊

Well, I have chatted with Gary Hall Sr. of the Race Club about this same topic. He responded some thing like 'hmm, even in the 50 meter sprint the pulling arm starts to move just before the recover arm enters the water'. Yes, if you try to do every thing with just the shoulders, you will have shoulder problems and be much slower in the water. In order for the hips to be able to generate rotation forces, the feet have to be anchored to some thing, and the water does not allow you to do this. Recently Fares Ksebati did a video with Rowdy Gaines and he finally made the comment that the rotation comes from the shoulders and pulling arm. I have argued with this about him for some time. As I said above, swim the catch up drill for a bit and notice how the rotation comes from the shoulders first, and then the hips rotate. The shoulders do not rotate at the same time like the hips do. About the only exception to this is with back stroke where the arms rotate opposite of each other, and with the 50 meter sprint, again the arms are opposite of each other.
