Joni really did justice to this song! Dionne Warwick no joke, for a 19 year old to tackle this with a stage full of men her fathers age is impressive.

Joni Sledge was my long ago crush.....so glad to run across this gem, I never knew it existed. Kathy sang most of the leads with Sister Sledge, it was nice seeing Joni shine on stage like that. RIP to a beautiful, talented, lady.

I road managed a tour 'Legendary Ladies of Soul' featuring The Supremes, Three Degrees & Sister Sledge. We went across Europe on a massive tour bus for several months. Had a great time and I got to know all the ladies well. Great memories!!!

Only 19 and Joni owned the stage with her immense presence! I like her much better than Dionne's version. And Pillippe's outro! Wow.

Agreed, at first I was like, "No Dionne? This isn't going to go well." Well, open mouth insert foot, Joni did a great job! Her voice is more softer and sensual, whereas Dionne's is more powerful. I still like the version with Dionne better, but this one is pretty darn good too! One thing is is for sure, the Spinners definitely had fun with this song regardless of who sang the lead.
@knockshinnoch19505 жыл бұрын
Cannot believe that even though this was a massive No1 Billboard Hot 100 hit the Spinners NEVER performed the song on TV together with Dionne Warwick until many years later when they appeared on her show in 1990.

i had always hoped Sister Sledge would reunite at some point (where are you Kathy?)...but, now that Joni has joined the ranks of so many great artists from the 70s and 80s who have left this life...well, this was just not to be...'Sister Sledge' had staying power, call it longevity...talented, smart and beautiful...and, they were spiritual...i admired them greatly over the decades...they remind me of my own three sisters...even though my sisters don't sing ... see you in Heaven, Joni!

Great performance. One of the greatest miscalculations in group history was when Phil Wynne thought he had a solo career ahead of him. Charismatic entertainer, but he should have learned from the mistake of David Ruffin. As for Joni Sledge.....RIP......nice job here, if Dionne wasn't available for the show.

I'll be 50 on September 12. I can remember riding in my parents car with no seatbelts or carseats listening to AM radio. 13Q in Pittsburgh...... Even at the age of 3 or 4 I can recall loving a lot of these songs from the early 70's. Some of the BEST music ever made! No lasers, no giant inflatable boobs, simply no BS..... Just great musicians with amazing talent..... Just listen to the back up band, the horns, and rhythm section, just crushing it!!! And NO autotune crap for the vocalists....... Where has the good music disappeared to???????

A 70s gem. Well crafred, written, produced and arranged. Right up there with my other 2 forgotten 70s overlooked masterpieces. Smoke from a distant fire by Sanford, Townsend Band and In the heart of the night by Poco. 70s had more talent in each category, Pop,rock,R&B, disco ( yes, there is a difference) jazz and country. Most of the mainstream top shelf artists did their best work in the 70s, never to come close again. The one hit wonders of the 70s were 1,000 x better then the crap of today in every aspect!

The push from the two back up singers. No hip bumbing with me. 😅 I loved 70's hip bumbing.

During World War II there were many artists dabbling in covers of others material, and for the most part the original version of course is the preferred recording, but in this case Joni made this performance seamless, and as good as the original. It has been nice to revisit this dusty disc. Midnight Special was always the paramount of contemporary entertainment of that time, and I enjoy the shows more now.
