I’m just sad I didn’t see this when it was first watched cause there was one person that didn’t take part in the Eggnog riot that is completely unexpected. In fact, on the day before the riot, he made sure to visit Sylvester at 6am to ask for help with trigonometry homework and is one of the only people to go through West Point without a single demerit. That man was a young Robert E. Lee, future general of the Confederate Army of Northern Virginia.

My understanding is that he had at one point expressed his concerns to Superintendent Thayer about Jefferson Davis and all the problems he was having, specifically to strategize if there was anything to be done to get him to fly right.

It's not the level of alcohol in moonshine that makes you go blind because you cannot have more than 100% or 200proof. The "blindy" type of moonshine is one that is distilled improperly and the wrong byproduct is tapped to be the drink, or the finished product has that byproduct in it. You want the ethanol, but the foreshots of any batch contains methanol, acetone, and ethyl acetate.

It was commonly caused by copper poisoning, due to using copper coil tube, as opposed to steel. Also, a lot of the more shady 'shiners would strain it through old auto radiators. That's why you would burn a spoonful to test it. If the flame is green, it's got copper.

At this point in time, Egg-Nog would have been COMPLETELY alcoholic, most likely with rum. "Non alcoholic" Egg-Nog was available until after 1900 (I think) because for the most part, Egg-Nog was NOT something made for "mass consumption". Basically, at this point, the Egg-Nog would have been "home-made", and basically every recipe included the use of alcohol (of one measurement as another) in order to act more as a "preservative" due to the use of eggs and milk in order to make the "Nog" portion. It was also included in order to counter the (sometimes HEAVY) use of cinnamon or peppermint

Remember everyone: In 1826, a Private in the Army made about $5 per month, so being given 35 cents to look the other way was nothing to sneeze at. For context, a Private in the Army today is paid $1,833.30 per month, and in the same circumstances, the cadets would've slipped him $128 to look the other way.

So... No bender like this but... 4th of July 4day weekend. I am getting out of the Army and my terminal leave starts in August. I decide to take some of my stuff home, including my first gun that I can't have on post. It was being held for me off post, it's fine. What isn't fine is home is Indianapolis. I was stationed in South Carolina. I did not have a milage pass, meaning I am supposed to be within 250 miles of the post at all times. Wasn't even late for PT on Tuesday. No alcohol was involved. You want alcohol stories and I gotta dig down to Ft Bliss (drinking age was 18 at the time), Korea or Germany.

Can confirm, Marines do get drunk and shoot at each other. Usually, 99% of the time, with nerf guns or paintball guns, granted, but... y'know... sometimes with other things. Depending on how much alcohol was involved :P

There is no such thing as NON-Alchole Eggnog, if there is no alcohol in it, it is not Eggnog it is something els. Eggnog is an alcoholic drink.
