I would refer all of you to Knife Delights Civil War Reproduction Knife video of September 23 2022 After seeing it I purchased two of the knives for $17 each plus shipping and they are amazing knives that reflect the ones in use by Union Soldiers in the Civil War They are very much like a large Barlow and carry perfectly in the Case large open belt sheath

You’re tempting me! I don’t buy American knives as a rule. Nothing against them, but if I don’t keep my buying rules tight, I’ll end up broke in no time.

@@slick_slicers $17 for beautiful historical reproduction of a knife that heroes carried into battle My uncle would have been captured and put into Andersonville Prison Camp where he died horribly 14 months later of typhoid carrying one of these knives So needless to say I had to have one for myself and one to mail to my brother

Steven Cocker is an excellent maker! Ian Rosie was just telling me about those Slim Barlows with the square bolsters. Very neat. I like the handle on your new Barlow. I am currently waiting on a response from Michael May on TWO new knives! Wish me luck! Glad to see you're back. Cheers!

Michael’s OK, but he can be a little half-hearted at times. That being said, he’s never let me down, and he’s made me some great knives… 8 of them, so far!

Barlows? Did someone say Barlows? LoL! Those Steven Cocker Barlows are so sweet Eric, not to mention the beauty & functionality of those other gorgeous Sheffield Barlows. I really need to add a Michael May to my Sheffield Collection. - Just moved MM to the top of the future purchases list! Would love a Cocker Barlow but have no clue how to obtain one.. I just picked up a couple vintage USA made Barlows - A Western USA 2 blade with Sawcut Bone & completely plain appearance - no etching, no shield, no bolster stamp. This Barlow is in Mint condition - full blades, really quality piece for $50. Also, picked up a 1982 Case Barlow with an amazing Stag Handle . Take care my friend! ( Sheffield Barlows are still #1 with me)

What do they say , " it's a poor day if you don't learn something new " ? Well I don't mind admitting I didn't know that the brass liners are dished on a handmade traditional. Thanks for that Slick . Appreciate the info. ATB Tony .🐴🏴󠁧󠁢󠁷󠁬󠁳󠁿

Every day’s a school day for all of us! To me, it’s one of the things that marks out a true traditional from a mock-traditional! Though the edges are becoming blurred!

I was delighted to add a Steven Cocker Barlow to my Sheffield collection, like you I would of preferred a proper tang stamp but it did come at a very reasonable price I thought! Wont be the last Cocker I get to add to the M May's,L Whites and A Harrisons!🇬🇧🇬🇧

A thought-provoking, even philosophical, examination of what constitutes a traditional knife. I suppose I like both the 'more artisan' and 'more machined' versions, as long as they are executed well. There are successes and failures in both categories, not always corresponding to their price points. I stopped buying Case because failures were the norm, and keep on buying GEC because successes are the norm, at least with the products I bought. With the Sheffield products I've found the picture to be less clear, but I'm very proud to own a few successes!

The trick with cookbooks, I eventually found, is to find a chef with the same palate. Steven Cocker shares the same aesthetic. If only the bugger would get back to me as he promised... a year ago. I don't actually mind. It means a UK knifemaker is busy, and I'm happy enough with that. Slick, can you remember where it's written that Obadiah was making knives with stronger bolsters? I honestly thought there was no evidence of a connection between Obadiah Barlow and the Barlow we know today. There is evidence for the Barlows of Neepsend, 'Barlow's', but there is doubt that they are the same family. As you say, and of the Barlows dug up on say colonial sites in the U.S, the common denominator is the long bolster. Handles and blades vary.

You have all hit the big problem with Sheffield makers! Even a couple of years ago, they were a dying breed. Their problem was selling what they made, now it’s keeping up! As frustrating as it is, I know which problem I’d rather see! Plus, I bear a certain amount of responsibility for where we are! Before I started showing them, TEWs would sit in inventory for months… now they’ve taken on two new makers!

I’ve been a bit preoccupied with trying to find a job to make videos. A 56 year old tetraplegic (quadriplegic to you) isn’t exactly flooded with offers you know! Finding work is a full time job. Now I’m working again, I feel less guilty doing something just for pleasure!

All of today’s tradition knives use some modern production equipment and materials. Some use less than others do. Large manufacturers enable people having more choices of different models to buy. Small knife makers benefit from knife collectors and large manufacturers. Their knives are made on a more personal level. Plenty of people like buying from local business I bought some for that reason and live, 3,600 miles away. Buying knives design by someone and produce in another place is far different than buying a knife from an individual that makes the knives they sell to me. That makes the knife more valuable and special to own.Even if it is not made of the newest steel and materials.🙂👍

The edges between truly traditional artisanal knives and machine produced factory knives is becoming more and more blurred every day. Case and Rough Rider, for example, are becoming more and more alike, separated only by geography. At the same time, GEC are heading the same route, but with better QC. In itself, that doesn’t bother me, so long as you’re honest about it.
