Amazing how Eric is using a completely different guitar to normal and it still sounds totally like him.

Richard Sheehan - Right on. I was about to say the same thing, before I read your comment. I used to work with a guitarist who would always be experimenting with different amps and guitars and would consistently sound like some identifiable version of himself. I think that a tonal fingerprint is one of the characteristics of an artist that has a strong concept. The fact that Eric, who has a very strong vision, does that is not surprising.

Tone is in the fingers
@piktormusic25384 жыл бұрын
gogpoydi - Yes, your hands play a part, but tone on every instrument starts in your mind. What are you trying to achieve? What is your concept? What are you listening to? Frank Zappa's advice to Steve Vai on tone: "That was after the first gig I ever did with him. We were having breakfast, and I said, “How was the gig last night? What did you think?” I was looking for advice and criticism. He said, “You know what, I think you’re a pretty good guitar player.” That, right there, was an amazing statement to hear from him. But then he said, “But your tone sounds like an electric ham sandwich.” That was just Frank’s way of saying I had to work on my tone. By that, he meant that the way you hear yourself, imagine yourself, is the way you’re going to sound. The way you think about the way you play is going to be represented in what comes out of the amp. It’s not in the gear, it’s in the way you hear yourself."

EJ is still the kindest, most genuine guitarist giving free lessons on the web today. Humbly brilliant, I'd call it. Thanks for giving us another look inside your techinque.

Always love watching you play, Eric. Takes be back to the mid/late 80s, when you played the Dallas Hard Rock Cafe. I hadn’t heard of you yet, but a good friend of mine - who used to give me guitar lessons - gushed about your amazing playing and went with me to the show. I was blown away; especially when you pulled the Hendrix Flying V off the wall and played one of his classics. Your style is instantly identifiable, in two or three notes, I know it’s Eric Johnson. Thanks for doing what you are do. You’re definitely one of the greats.

This guy is so darn musical I can't think of a way to describe him! It shocked me to see him play on a firebird, a real Johnny Winter special! He could make a k Mart special sound like a million bucks! And it's nice to see him take the time to give us these short but sweet segments since we can't see guys like him right now because of what's going on in the world right now! Thank you so very much Eric!

A non-reverse VII even! It makes sense really as their tone sort of tests between single coils and Humbucking pickups.

Still plenty of gain on that... but yes, sometimes having more of the natural tone of the individual instrument itself can be a more desirable tone... (maybe with a little bit of reverb and some delay on it. I have a S. Koren Schecter Tele, w/ coil taps that I can get so many different tones and colors with... I just love it..) Am glad that I started on an accoustic rather than an electric.. My mom (aunt and uncle) were harpists (LA Phil)... So I learned something about the myriad of different ways to strike (and or mute) a string before I ever picked up a guitar.. Thank you SOOO much for so generously giving these most helpful and inspiring mini lessons. I appreciate them so much..❣ ROCK ON...!!! 👍
