I honestly kinda hate this throwaway society sometimes. So many perfectly functional cars that just need a little bit of work are now considered "worthless".

I think the main issue is that many of these don't have basic 'modern' safety features, like ABS or airbags. That may deter them becoming hand-me-downs, or make parents shopping for a car for their kid not to consider them. But still, they'd beat walking.

I don't like throwing away things either but not everyone has the time, tools or space, my partner tried to daily an 80s Audi coupe GT. Eventually lack of certain parts availability put paid to that with the frequency things would need replacing. There's only so much you can do when living in a flat with street parking or renting a council garage where people would moan.

I had exactly the same model, red, 5 doors, mine was a 1.2 12v from 98 or 99, was a world cup edition. It was imported from Germany around 2013 and it was in my family until 2018 or so. I had the same problems, throttle body was dirty, gearbox was full of oil. Otherwise besides normal service i changed one sender pump unit, one camshaft sensor. Also my rear axle broke exactly under the left side spring holder. I was doing some offroad but nothing extreme. I had to weld it back. 😁 The car it’s still on the road, my father sold the car in our city, the new owner it’s happy with her. Remember when this car managed to start at -27 C in hard Romanian winter but the idle motor was giving high rev to the engine, around 2000 rps intermitently. At least it’s was starting. Good old times. Now i have a 1.2 Corsa D from 2011. The gearbox it’s covered in oil already. 😂

I got a pre facelift model ^^ this felt so satisfying to watch. Thanks. Definitly great, straight to the point showing with hands-on experience and important side-notes! This way anyone can follow along do it properly thanks very much mate. Very helpful. As I can't get the life of me get it do die. And made my first mechanical achivements with a engine like this such as replacing the thermostat on that one. I love that these cars are so accessible to work on compared to the VW i previously owned. Compared to the more sophisticated engine the 1.8T these are really easy to maintain. As you have plenty of space to work arround most stuff. Yet to say booth are nice engines and are reliable while one will have more appeal when it comes to power surge. But I like that you opted for a facelift 4-cylinder engine. With DOHC instead of the pre-facelift one for repairs. And gave it such thorugh detail on each part, replacing the seals. Love that attention to detail! As the facelift is easier to obtain probably is favored a lot more by other people. The actual process of replacing the theromstat housing on my pre-facelift was equally hard as you have to take off the timing belt in order to proceed. I get why the previous owner probably did not wanna do that.

I would say it is worth it. An old car like this can still take you wherever you want to go, and it could easily outlast anything in production today with proper maintenance. The throwaway mentality too many people have is really what kills perfectly serviceable old cars, and it makes you wonder: when have you last seen one in good condition?

Good stuff! Alot of these procedures I've done on my own 5D B Corsa :) We have a different engine though; you have a twincam, mine is the sleepy ol' C14NZ (8 valve) :) I've also tried very hard to find a gasket set for my throttle body but it seems they've completely vanished, been thinking of buying cork sheet and making custom gaskets since one of them on my throttle body is sweating a bit as it is so it's in need of a replacement. Also kinda wanna replace the fuel pressure regulator diaphragm but those aswell are none existant :| People call these cars trash but they're actually very fun to drive around town because they're so agile and responsive, you can take corners very fast where bigger cars need to slow down significantly. With the lack of ANY modern systems, you're in direct contact with the road (no power steering, no traction control, etc). Due to their lack of power you can actually rev up and pedal it while still going within the speed limits LOL. Someone said it very well "it's alot more fun to drive a slow car fast, than to drive a fast car slow" and this is a very meaningful thing to consider if you wanna avoid speeding tickets several times a year or getting your license revoked. Nothing's gonna change my mind, old and simple hatchbacks such as this Corsa are FUN. They are not fast or comfortable, but they are fun :)

Not worthless at all. I had a Corsa 1.5TD a few years back that I got free. Drove it for 4 years on a mixture of paraffin, cooking oil and red diesel and it only needed a couple of shock absorbers. Wrecked it when I hit a badger For the past 8 years I've driven a 2001 Passat TDI Estate that cost me £160. I get parts cheap from a "new old stock" shop on ebay. Cheap motoring is great
