Years ago I was buying cheap Forever 21 sunglasses that I kept losing and breaking. I decided to get a good pair of $130 ray bans & I’ve now had them over a decade. It’s the only pair I’ve had since as well.

I just started watching this young guy. What I like about him is "his honesty". I think many KZbinrs these days are not honest in what they do and what they say. Somehow, my experiences say that Alex has clarity and honesty. I made several financial mistakes (I will be 49 years old next month). I wish someone would have woken me up back then. I used to overspend like anything since my early days when I started earning money. My earnings remained high mostly due to my qualification, but I lacked the wisdom to spend, and I had zero wisdom in investing it and growing it properly. By the amount of money I made, I would have been financially independent 10 years earlier had I learnt how to invest properly and how not to waste in useless stuff which I rarely used.

One thing I do to save money is, don't go into the stores unless you have to. Don't walk all over the stores if you don't need something and if you find something you think, I most have this, take a picture of it with your phone but don't buy it. Then for a week look at that picture everyday, asking yourself, do I really want to blow this money on this item. Normally after a week of looking at the item and talking to myself about the money, I almost never go back to buy the real item. I find just staying out of the store helps a lot as well. This as saved me lots of money.

Or you could just buy it and keep it for a week unopened/ unused. If you don't really want it after a week - take it back. I have taken about half the clothes I buy back.

my friends call me cheap, but I'm frugal, I've never had debt, worked 2 jobs to get my house in a cheaper area, get cashback, savings, discounts etc where I can, I dont replace anything unless it cant be fixed, I know work part time & I rent out my spare room on a Airbnb, I've got savings, bonds, shares and investments aswell as small streams of income. most of my friends are working 40 hours a week and up to their eyes in debt. the only debt I have is my house which I try to pay a little extra off each month. I'm happier now then I've ever been.

You are wise beyond your years. I am a retired 67-year-old and the best thing I ever did was to invest in a managed S&P 500 account way back in the early 1990's. Yes, at times it's been a roller-coaster ride over the ensuing years, but over the long haul it's proven to rebound after every financial downturn. I also agree with and abide by your financially minimalist outlook. Bravo!

Money is labour...where you put your labour is freedom. We are not consumers, the only purchases we make are investments for our future. We... as near 40 yr olds both sold our houses for a simpler life. We glamour camped on a beautiful North Queensland Austraian river front property for 5 yrs, very minimal rent. Saved and worked 8mths a year until we bought a bus that we could live off grid in. Now we have lived on properties for years... rent and utility free. We are growing all our veg again not only for us but many. Something I learnt very early was "Every time you part with money evaluate how much time did you work for that item???" If you want a particular product ....is it worth 15mins or up to 1 week for a new flatscreen TV of work..????and do you really need it????" Another great tip is "Every dollar that you don't spend is another dollar you don't need to earn!!" The world will definitely be better off without people consuming unnecessary amounts of garbage they don't need and getting into debt because of it!!!

I also save lots of money by using Walmart shopping online, then you just pick it up yourself. I never have to walk into the store and I never buy something that is not on my shopping list this way.

My $20 Mr Coffee maker went out after 7 years. I almost bought another one at the store. Instead, I called their corporate office, explained the issue, gave them my receipt and filled out their form. The person said they would send me an upgraded Mr Coffee maker mailed for free. I saved $20.

I’m very content with the things I have now..don’t need to buy anything. What I DO constantly wonder is if the small $ I’ve saved could be used more efficiently to make more money via investments, stocks, etc. Im whittling down the things I no longer need such as clothes, house decorations, etc.

I’d agree with you with takeout food delivery but not grocery delivery. I think the big thing minimalism shows is that what is worth something to one person is not worth it to another. For example I hate food shopping, I have no problem buying chocolate but somehow just can’t get myself to the shops but buying takeout food is expensive. The few $ trade off of delivery saves me because I’m less likely to get takeaway food. Also I’ve shopped in the store and half the time I find I impulse buy whereas shopping online groceries I can’t sort by the cheapest price etc. what effective for some isn’t for others

I would NOT automate bills that can vary month to month, such as electrical, gas, and water. I have heard of people getting charged thousands because of meter errors, or they had a variable rate and were not aware. During the Texas snow storm some people got screwed when they were charged crazy electrical rates.

Spot On! I live a minimalist lifestyle & budget. What I disagree with is to continue to drop money into an invest that’s losing money, while I agree you don’t sell, I disagree with continuing to add to it, that’s like tossing money into a fire. During times when the market is down shift to putting your money in investments that aren’t losing money into life conservative investments that aren’t or into invest mortgages. You’re still investing, but not at a huge loss.

I been practicing minimalist for 2 years and I found being content by the things I have by only buying things I love 100%, things I use every day, durability, maintaining it and keep it looking new, and being multi purpose. I wait at least a month before I purchase to see if I still want it. I have time to care for my things since I have less.

Austin, thanks. Planning for emergency expenses is OK, but planning your life and setting goals is even more important. Sincere long term goals , can give you reason to limit and control your behavior. Set more advanced goals every few years. Whether you like it or not, you are in a race to build enough wealth to retire at a reasonable age. If you fail, the final years of your life will be your worst years.

I've been practising frugality for many years, but I find your ideas to be food for thought. This is mainly because my children are in their mid twenties and trying to find balance in their lives. One might be getting himself into the ratrace in Europe, the other into the downward economic spiral of Africa. Hi Austin. I think you have great advice. I do have one suggestion though that you really need to consider. You need to own your home. Paying rent is basically throwing money down a bottomless pit. Once you have paid off your "modest" home, you own it and it will save you more money in the long run. I bet if you sit down and figured out how much money you have paid in rent you could have bought or nearly bought a home for that. My brother has rented the same house for 15 years at over $650/month, starting at $500/month. Although that is cheap in today's terms, he has paid his landlord approximately $103,500. He could have purchased a house for $80,000 15 years ago and it would have been paid off by now.

Buying a house isn’t as rosy as many people like to make it out to be. You pay yearly property taxes, insurance, maintenance, more furniture, tools, lawn care, mortgage interest and a host of other fees and taxes when you buy like closing costs, plus the time commitment to maintaining a house when you’re a homeowner. Renters never have to deal with any of this stuff.

Brilliant video! But...Like a number of other people I'm going to disagree with the point on grocery delivery. Years ago I would take the kids grocery shopping with me and every time in addition to runnin around to catch them they would make spend more money than I had planned. With grocery deliveries, I could buy just what I wanted - and a couple of things for them as well, but under my control. It saved a lot of time, money and energy.

Austin , I just subscribed and started watching your videos. I'm sure you don't like the dirty looking grout between the tiles on your counter top but you are too frugal to replace the counter. The cheap way to fix this is buying a quart of masonry white paint and a cheap foam brush. Paint the grout white with the foam brush and buff the excess paint off the tile with paper towel. You will be amazed at the difference it makes.

I just got rid of one couch today to unclutter my living room. I went to pay for my WiFi and discovered it wasn't due yet. I'm that far ahead of our bills. I dump an extra $500 on our mortgage monthly. And most of what we save on other bills goes to the credit card debt. When that debt is gone, my mortgage comes right after that.

It is so true about people want things fast and can not wait, taking a loan for renovation and not afford a new table so the store offers to have a monthly payment plan. All which will give stress in paying these things that you can not afford but you want things fast it is not at all worth it to me to have a life like that. If I can not afford something then I will wait until I can and it does not need to make me stressed about money.

My Bills are automatic for the most part but some cost more to auto than go pay in person. My utilities are paid by credit card because I get cash back. As long as they don't charge extra for it I'll keep it up.

It's really great that you understand so much about this topic at your age. Good for you! It took me longer, but I guess what counts is that I get it now. After spending SO much money in my lifetime for all the wrong reasons, I now have a better awareness about money stuff that no one really taught my generation in, like, high school which is when it's really needed. At 54, I have semi-retired because I know I could live on half my pre-retirement income comfortably. I now have the freedom to work part-time doing something fun, purposeful and fulfilling while getting a pension which covers all my basic needs and covered medical insurance by my former employer. I really like your inspiring content along with your sense of humor. I've subscribed and look forward to future videos as I appreciate your values and all you have to bring to viewers. Peace, Marta
