---
In the last dozen years, Elder has stepped out of the shadows of their peers in the heavy rock underground to emerge a unique voice, delivering album after album of almost unparalleled consistency and creativity. Omens, the band's fifth full-length record, is the newest pillar in the construction of their own musical universe. With it, Elder further embrace experimentation in their brand of progressive psychedelic rock in which atmosphere, melody and structure are created and transformed again and again.
Following 2017's Reflections of a Floating World and the 2019 experimental EP The Gold & Silver Sessions, it was anyone's guess what the band's next full-length might have in store. Having cemented their own sound - a dense yet lucid brand of heavy rock full of unexpected flourishes and progressive jaunts - the latter EP showcased an exact opposite side of Elder, more rooted in sparse krautrock and even jazz-tinged jams. Omens answers this speculation with a contradiction that embodies the spirit of Elder: somehow, there's even more everything.
In five cinematic songs, lush, intricately interwoven melodies grow and dissolve into spaced-out jams. Massive riffs thunder down into a churning sea of psychedelic sounds and unpredictable grooves carry away the listener. Elder paints pictures with their music, and Omens shows the band experimenting with an even more colorful palette - with good reason. After thirteen years, this is the first full-length recorded with a new lineup including guitarist Michael Risberg and new drummer Georg Edert, along with guest performances by Fabio Cuomo on Rhodes piano and synthesizers.
This is music for a vacation from reality - or to lose oneself in another world. And yet Omens is not purely an exercise in escapism, but also reflects the increasingly bleak, confusing and antagonistic times in which it was written. Composed as a concept album spanning the lifespan of a civilization, the album also reads as a commentary on our own society hell-bent on profitability at the expense of our own lives and environment.
Omens was recorded and mixed at Black Box Studios in France with engineer Peter Deimel (Shellac, dEUS, Motorpsycho) and mastered by Carl Saff in Chicago. The result is an album that is rich, warm and dynamic, presenting the many layers of Elder's complex sound clearly and offering new discoveries with every listen. Elder will embark on US and European tours this spring through summer to support the record, which is slated for release on April 24th in the US via Armageddon Shop and in Europe via Stickman Records.

For people who are complaining about the entire vocal thing, sound change, etc, elder has always been changing their style. Their first album was much more metal than progressive, then it changed. Bands undergo change over time, it can't be helped. If it's the same sound for 5 albums it will get old. New music and a new style to express new times. We grow with the music. Learn to enjoy what's here while it is still.

Amen. It kills me when people want to hear bands simply rinse & repeat. I love Elder, and I've thoroughly enjoyed hearing them evolve - this is the case with a lot of my favorite bands. I think anyone who plays music or has truly eclectic taste can appreciate how much the creative process is a living, breathing thing. Just like most people don't want to listen to a single band, album, or song on repeat - artists don't want to create the same piece over and over. I'm really excited to hear Omens in its entirety, and even more excited to see them in Denver. Kudos on continually exploring new sounds, guys...it's exciting & it's why I keep coming back for more.

@@ecogrief9936 Well, it`s always a matter of taste. Lore of course is a masterpiece, but it seems that the Stoner Rock Phase (which in my opinion never matched to Elder) ended with Lore, just because NickDiSalvo`s abilitys as a songwriter grew into next level. Taking Risberg as a permanent member to the band was a first sign, that the songs has developed more and more complex to perform with one guitarist only. I`ll miss the old times when i couldn`t turn my head anymore after an Elder-show, but for me it is a consequent futher developement for the Band ...and i`ll follow :-)

Probably the most straight forward and "breezy" rock track Elder have ever done, it's a real catchy ear worm of a song, and my second favorite track on the album after Halcyon. Once again they effortlessly nail the "epic ending", as they so often do (one of their best talents as a band quite honestly!).

Lyrics: Eyes face toward the sun Mounting the empyrean Everything is all that will remain Fate is just a word Striking straight into the nerve We all cast a shadow of the pain What is it you want? Consuming every thought Consuming all you are Piercing right into the core A fallen star to deify Glowing in the morning light of all demise Bowing softly toward the end Staring at the sun hanging in air Wait for it to fall Seeing with the eyes of an animal Backed against the wall Carrying the voiceless in a hope And a hope within a sound Burning down to ash to disappear Without a trace upon the ground Staring at the sun hanging in air Wait for it to fall Seeing with the eyes of an animal Backed against the wall Carrying the voiceless in a hope And a hope within a sound Burning down to ash to disappear Without a trace upon the ground

Goddamn. I wasn't totally in love with this song at first. I accepted it as "music is made by humans, humans change, and music changes" and rolled with it, despite not feeling the majesty that was Reflections and Lore. But goddamn. The riffs from 3:37-4:00 really bring home how much this song FEELS like Elder even if they don't necessarily sound like Elder. Sounds like some sort of Emerson, Lake & Palmer/Motorpsycho hybrid and now I just can't wait for April.

Oh wow! Amazing! This seems to incorporate some elements of alternative (thinking Foo Fighters) and even emo, in the vocal and guitar parts, in a very classy, catchy way that still sounds like Elder. And then some more overt references to classic prog, like the keyboards around 6:45. In my opinion, the vocals have improved dramatically, in terms of range of melodic expression. They tended to be a little more one-note almost sing-yelling in the past, and now it's like a huge leap forward in singing. Wow, I love this band. Best possible way to explore a new sound! Bring disparate new elements into the fold, but make them your own... and just texture after texture of sheer quality. I can't stop listening to this. Elder has become one of my favorite bands, thanks to youtube suggestions over the years, starting with a link after listening to Baroness... very grateful!

The mark of a great band is to adapt and experiment with form and style in a way that clearly represents a change, yet to retain and implement the best recognisable aspects of their former works, leading to a more complete experience each time. Elder meet this criteria, as (for me) one of the most accomplished bands on the planet right now. There's obviously an evolution here, particularly on the vocals, which may not be to everyone's tastes - but the main criticism of these elements are primarily a matter of taste, and of expectation. The quality of the music remains evident, nonetheless.

I like it! After the last album I anticipated the more proggy/psychedelic riffs over the super heavy crunchy sludge albums from before. But I love both sides of the coin. This sounds like a late 2000's Rush song, or Neo-Prog band like Jadis but ramped up to like 11 in the riffs and crunch department. Then it unfolds, like Elder songs do, into other sounds, the mid section becoming more like a Belew era King Crimson riff mixed in with some Tool. I love that it just keeps evolving! Keeps things fresh and interesting!

I think part of the resistance to this new material is how drastic the change in tone appears. When listening to most recent full length album, Reflections, the guitar tone and musicality is so focused and tight without being constrained - Sanctuary just soars and feels epic (easily one of best songs from past decade). Compared with this new material, it feels more spread out and "loose." The guitar tone is noticeably different here which makes digesting it a bit more confusing. After hearing such a distinctive sound for so long, it's hard to adapt so quickly. Part of what makes Elder so unique, is that incredible guitar sound. Also, Nick is just a genius on the guitar. Anyways, love you Elder and look forward to hearing rest of the album.

Elder are progressing nicely into a sick jam band. I approve.

For a sec I felt you guys started sounding for commercialized at the begging ig this song, but what an ending! Love it

I am very into this. It's always hard to judge whether you like a song when you hear it out of context from the album. But this is cool, good stuff Elder. Ya done did it again.

I'm not really into prog, but Elder's newer stuff is a huge exception. I love everything that these guys put out!

I was one of those people who listened for the first time and were like 'eh', but this entire album has turned out to be my favourite of the last decade. Greatest awesomest riffage and great composition. Especially, I'm hooked on parts like 4:04. Simple riff, but it so unfathomably good. Feels good to play along on the guitar
