Eileen is 61 years old. She's from Rhode Island but relocated to Harrisburg, Pennsylvania, after a friend's friend promised a room. To rent, but the situation didn't work out, so Eileen and her friend are back out on the street homeless. Now they are stranded. Eileen and her friend are new to Harrisburg. It's an unfamiliar city, and now they don't have the funds to go anywhere. Right now, Eileen is not sure what they are going to do.
When I first met Eileen, she was in desperate need of eyeglasses. My friend Cody did a great job telling the story of our day in Harrisburg and going to the store to get Eileen glasses • Invisible People in Ha... . Eileen recorded an interview, but something was wrong with the SD Card corrupting the file. I happened to run into Eileen a little later, and she agreed to do another video. Interestingly enough, I didn't even ask her. I just mentioned that her interview didn't come out because I made a mistake, and she offered to record this interview.
Eileen shares very candidly about the affordable housing crisis. She says she cannot find a room to rent or to share that she can afford. The housing that social services offer that comes at a very discounted rent is over rundown or in a bad neighborhood. Many communities now are scrambling to build new affordable housing and housing for seniors, but it's not even close to enough. Often nonprofits are forced to deal with landlords that are offering apartments that barely make an inspection. What Eileen shares is often very true. She says it's crappy housing and a "big mega ripoff."
Eileen says she found an apartment for $700 a month that comes with all utilities paid even cable, but because she's homeless, she doesn't believe she'll get approved to live there.
WEAR A MASK! PLEASE WEAR A MASK!
Disclaimer: Invisible People does not edit our first-person homeless interviews. The reason for this is to preserve the integrity of the homeless person's story. It's their story raw and unedited. In this video, Eileen gets upset about the pandemic and people wearing masks. The statements Eileen makes about wearing masks are not true. Here are some facts:
Debunked myths about face masks www.mayoclinichealthsystem.or...
Coronavirus: 'Deadly masks' claims debunked www.bbc.com/news/53108405
I encourage you to do your own research. I wear a mask 100% of the time when I am going to be around other people. I wear a mask for their protection. Over 216k American's have died of COVID-19. PLEASE WEAR A MASK!
Eileen says she doesn't have a spirit of giving up, which helps her survive, but Eileen also feels she cannot do homelessness anymore. Eileen continues whether she wants to or not, she doesn't have a choice. Elderly homelessness is the fastest-growing demographic of homelessness. Boomers are hitting 65 at 10,000 people a day. Many lost their safety net in the 08 cash, and now the pandemic is causing economic hardship for everyone.
Your voice can help end homelessness. If we do not fix the affordable housing crisis, homelessness will continue to get worse. Click here invisiblepeople.tv/getinvolved to tweet, email, call, or Facebook your federal and state legislators to tell them ending homelessness and creating more affordable housing is a priority to you.

Eileen's statements about masks and the coronavirus are not true. PLEASE WEAR A MASK. I wrestled with posting this video because of her false beliefs, but to preserve each person's story's integrity, we do not edit videos. It's their story raw and unedited. It's also not my story, which means I do not feel it is right to censor a story. What is true is Eileen is an elderly homeless adult, and she is vulnerable. Elderly homelessness is the fastest-growing homeless population. It was a crisis before the pandemic, and it's going to get worse. WE MUST END HOMELESSNESS! For these reasons, I decided to post Eillen's story. Coronavirus cases are spiking again across the country. The pandemic is now shifting to the Midwest and to more rural areas; cases are trending upward in most states, many of which are setting weekly records for new cases. The reason the pandemic continues to grow is as a nation, we all do not follow basic safety guidelines like wearing masks and social distancing. For a homeless person, the coronavirus is just another challenge on top of all the other challenges they face every day. Homeless people also do not have access to information as housed people do. I often run into homeless people who share Eillen's point of view. Like many of us, they are frustrated about having to live through this pandemic. Bathrooms are now closed. Foot traffic to panhandle from is gone. Feeding programs and other support services have stopped. With winter coming, many emergency shelters are not opening. The only way we are ever going to get past this pandemic is by following basic safety guidelines such as wearing masks, social distancing, and using hand sanitizer. People's lives depend on us following those guidelines. Please wear a mask any time you are around other people.

Yeah i think this video did provoke some negative reaction and unnecessary debate. Rather than pay attention to main subject which homeless issue, now some people debate about wear mask or not to wear mask, and bullied each other also from mask group and no mask group. Sparks so much negativity. Really lose my sympathy for her. I imagine one day she will stay somewhere and create unnecessary fight aggressively with her neighbour over things which could be resolve if she can be little respectful to other who has different view as her. U can see how she suddenly talk so rude to someone who just help her with glasses. So imagine how she will argue with other stranger.

@@lialia3796 I hear you. the people leaving anti-mask comments made up their mind months ago. Who knows, maybe a few of them will click on the links in the description and learn the real truth. Our work is not about creating sympathy. Every single day, I help people who I may not like personally. We must end homelessness for everyone. left outside, Eileen will die. At 62, she is vulnerable. She is also vulnerable to the coronavirus. From this interview, you can tell Eileen is upset. She's been homeless for some time. The mask thing could just be her lashing out at something. Eileen's views on masks have nothing to do with the fact she is homeless. Her story is a very real story on elderly homelessness, and we all must do something to end homelessness in our communities.

@@InvisiblePeople i do respect u for what u do. It's another level of human compassion. Actually it's not about helping someone u like or don't like personally. What i refer to 'sympathy' here is maybe there is a reason why her initial friend who offer her the place then changed mind. Anyway, my point is we ourself could help ourself or create problem for ourself.

@@lialia3796 When people are scared and distrusting they hit out. Eileen is on the street, the state has taken her belongings and trashed her memories, they’ve not helped her back up. This pandemic has compounded the homelessness and poverty issues. I don’t agree with her view on masks but I can understand why she’s angry and wants to figuratively flip the bird to the establishment. Why should she give a flying fig when she clearly feels no one gives an F about her 🤷🏻‍♀️ You can see the negative cycle... and there are many many more Eileens out there. You have to break it somehow and gain trust to move forward... it’s basic human psycho dynamics.

Yes. They figure out how much they can charge a person at their max they can probably afford, knowing the government will pay them double what you charge the renter. So they can get $900 total for an apartment that MIGHT be worth the $300 the person pays. I'm betting it's healthier living in a tent. It's not rodent filled, bug infested, mold ridden in a tent like "affordable housing". Then the area is usually not safe either.

Did I hear her mention a child? I’m helping my 88 year old dad. Neither Siblings nor grandchildren are helping because of a lack of forgiveness and too busy trying to survive, with maybe questionable priorities- do great grandchildren NEED cell phones, or does learning to be dependable and trustworthy begin at a very young age? I think helping elderly should begin in the family. Unfortunately, family has been disintegrating for way too long.

@@arleneaugustahair8393 😊 ...both my folks are identified as having dementia. My mom clearly has Alzheimer’s but I’m thinking my dad is misdiagnosed. I’ve learned how to connect with both, though, from mmlearn.org and Teepa Snow on KZbin. It’s not so difficult to help our elders, with knowledge easily accessible. It just requires a bit of time sacrifice that is actually nice. The only catch is paying for extra food as you see that they don’t cook much, or yard work that isn’t done while giving them time, etc. It’d help if my dad valued my time, since he has double the income my husband and I have. There’s a learning curve on both ends but our elders would do well to pay family better than they pay strangers. It’d be different if he had less income. We’d probably sell his house and we’d do better together with sharing expenses- paying only one tax bill and a single home insurance bill, etc.

Although not as bad as America, NZ now has an extreme housing crisis, many of my nieces and nephews generation will never own a home....just finding a house to rent is difficult enough. But this woman, she WANTS to be independent in shelter. Where are her children? Maybe she gave up on family for a reason. I LOVE the extended families living together and watching over each other. This country is not good with taking care of their elderly or disabled family members at ALL!! Not all family is good, it’s always a messy long story in most cases, family can cut good family members off making them homeless, but not in all cases. Online shopping is a hot potato. Our future is more unemployment, and a rising cost of living. For people who live in basic housing, like a studio , for around 1200 a month, the shortages r increasing. Oh Mark bless you re the mask 😓 This whole Covid situation must add so much stress/anxiety/ confusion to the already bewildering experience of homelessness. Eileen’s frustration is palpable. I hope there is some way to help her back to Rhode Island or at least find shelter in Harrisburg.

@Avery Breaux You clearly don't know what you are talking about. All around the World people are wearing masks. I live in Denmark, and we have a government who actually believes in scientists. But if you think superspreader Trump knows everything, you should follow a program on Trump University. Btw maybe you should wonder why Trump is so keen on promoting hydroxychloroquine and now also degeneron.

@Avery Breaux Try telling that to the Japanese. Japanese have always been a country of mask wearers even pre-pandemic. They are also a country with high longevity attributed to their generally healthier lifestyle, large consumption of fish - omega oils, densely packed nutrients such as seaweed and immune protective vitamin d. They have grasped and understood early on the protective effects of mask wearing and social distancing (they bow and don’t greet with touch) that you protect others by wearing one especially the elderly. Japan with a population of 127 million has recorded only 1,635 deaths!! Economically they are forecast to come out of this terrible situation as one the strongest because they have been quick to adapt and as a result keep things going. Ultimately getting through this thing will be down to protective measures individuals can take for themselves and collective action. I suppose only time will tell which stance is right but in the meantime I choose to pay heed to the medical and healthcare professionals who advocate that it’s in our best interest to wear a mask.

I feel for these people’s situation of homelessness but I feel there’s always more to the story that’s not being told. I agree with you about she can’t afford a bus ticket..Usually homeless people have always struggled with family dynamics, finances, drugs, health, education and get involved with the wrong people it seems. Although, we don’t always seem to hear that part of the story. I have a friend that I have helped through the years that been on the edge of homelessness. She seemed to always have low self esteem, chose to stay with a man that had health issues and wouldn’t work when he could. She let the man take whatever money she did have when she was working, she never went to the dentist which lead to her having a life threatening infection, so now she is sickly. She defended her son when he committed a crime and served time in prison. So she seemed to make one bad decision after another but she won’t share that in her story. So you feel for them but at some point you gotta make better choices too.

Retirement! People have this thing that social security is going to be their end all be all. Social security is only to supplement what you have saved for retirement. If you don’t have any now, start Laddering CDs, start a Roth IRA and so forth. Put your money to work for you. This way when you retire, you can be set.
