Hi Jim. Hope you are well. A few years ago, I used to go 60 mile sportives for something to do on a ‘normal’ pushbike. Before that, and since 1988, I regularly used to mountain bike 3 times a week, 20 miles a time. But now work and ‘age’, hasn’t strictly made it harder, but it’s more about time. Last year, I kitted one of my old mountain bike up with a set of panniers and did a bit of ‘bike camping’. It was great, as I could use a few local woods as they are more accessible on a pushbike than walking, or having to leave a car overnight. Now, a electric bike, I would imagine, would make the whole wild bike camping experience a lot easier, as I could carry a bit more kit and get up the hills easier, so go a bit further. You’ll be doing a wild bike camp next, won’t you? All the best.👍🏾🇬🇧😉

Not sure about the bike camping. A lot of the woodland I use is very dense and would be difficult on a bike. Might have a go in the summer though.

Nice ..I’m 62 and if I got one it would have to have three wheels my balance is okay now but will get worse with time. Have fun stay safe.

I brought a pedal assist bike yrs ago for £1100. It only has 7 gears and tbh i cud do with more. My throttle only goes to 3mph so u have to pedal it if i want to get anywhere lol. I have 5 assisance levels and try to use the assist as little as possible but my god! It weighs a bloody ton! Its got decent suspension (my first bike with that!). After about 500miles on that i was able to get out my old mountain bike again. They are both good bikes for me for very different reasons. I dont use the electric one much but when i want to use it im glad i have it 😊

I think electric bikes are perfect for what you mention, age and health related issues. Great if you can't ride a non powered bike for these reasons. For people that are more than able, I don't see the point unless you can't be arsed or you live somewhere in the mountains. For me while I still can, I prefer the additional health benefits/fat loss of pushing myself and not being assisted, but that's just my view, more bang for buck with exercise. I do get annoyed with these passing me on the roads and the rider looking back like they have just won the Tour De France, WTF that all about? I know what you mean about the brakes, my current gravel bike has the mechanical version and like you say, are pretty useless.

To be honest Steve, its all down to how you use the power. Level 5 and its easy, have it on level 1and it will only help up to walking speed then its all down to the rider. For popping into town for a bit of shopping, its like having a small moped. 😁

Wouldn't be without mine, with COPD my bike helps me get out to places i can no longer walk to without becoming breathless and having to stop every six yards, it also pulls a diy bicycle trailer that carries my camping gear.

I like the idea of an electric bike but not sure I would manage. My real concern would be that I live in a flat and getting it upstairs. My neighbours might kick of as I live on the ground and not on the first floor. Just my thoughts and my sense of humour. :)

They are handy. If you like bikes but are getting a bit older, it helps a lot.

I got an e-bike in 2023, my health issues made it so I could not ride a normal bike, I am coming upto 2000 miles now and my e-bike has got me out the house and in the countryside that would not have been possible on a std bike, love mine, it’s nothing great, one of Halfords carera crossfire.
