I had one of the first Honda electric fit cars when they came out. My 2 biggest frustrations with that car were when winter hit, mileage took a HUGE hit. My second was when someone pulled out in front of me causing an unavoidable hit at 30-40mph, the airbags didn't deploy.

Since most of the time you are not going to start with a full battery(long trips only)for the sake of battery longevity and you are definitely not going to drive until the car dies(for the same reason and especially in a cold climate); the accepted charge values for battery life are 85% down to 15%(some use 80 - 20). 20% minimum for below freezing. So just multiply the resultant ranges from this test by 0.6 to 0.7 -- for the Model 3 that would be a real world range of 168 to 197 miles and everything will be less for below freezing temps.

Mmmm! Perhaps a plug in hybrid might be the way to go before fully committing to a full EV until the batteries are improved for efficiency. Can somebody please tell me though! In winter driving, does the car’s heater in a plug in hybrid work on electric power alone or would I need the ICE to heat up the cars interior? Thanks.
@peterjones6640
@peterjones6640 2 жыл бұрын
I have an Ioniq PHEV ( since 2017). Best electric range I have achieved is 35 miles, but you should note that just because it is a PHEV doesn’t mean to say you can drive it exclusively for 35 miles on battery alone. What tends to happen, especially in the winter is that almost as soon as you start the car the petrol engine will start, only once the engine has been running for a bit will it then revert to electric only. However it is in my opinion a good car, I have achieved around 77mpg on long journeys ( it operates in hybrid mode once the battery is diminished) on a mixture of dual carriageways/ town centre driving and more minor roads. However my discussion with Hyundai dealer six months ago suggested that few of theses cars were now being manufactured.

I regularly do 450+ mile trips with no more than 3, 10 minute stops. I have to drive from Bristol to Dundee (and back) about 7 or 8 times a year. An expensive car that requires 2 very expensive charges en-route is simply no use to me as it would push the trip to an unacceptable length of time. It's often questioned how many people do long journeys but you'd probably find it's more than you think.

Hard to get "clean" results. Does the car come with a sub zero package? Is it kept in a garage? Do you use an app to prep you car for departure using your domestic electric supply? What size wheels do you have fitted? Do you heat the cabin or the driver? and on and on and on. All of these will have a significant impact.

Good review, but also worth pointing out to consumers that you'd never drive to zero miles. At a minimum you'd leave 20 'in the tank' to find a charger (assuming you're pushing the range on a long journey). Not to mention, not everyone's driving still is the same, nor is the battery age. So I'd assume taking another 10% off for battery degradation and safety margin. That takes a safe driving distance for the best model 3 down to 228 miles. Fine for driving within a couple hours of home, but no use to anyone doing proper long journeys unless willing to put up with long charge times added to your day. EVs are getting better, but still fall well short on the driving experience of their ICE counterparts, certainly not good enough to convince me to take the leap yet.

It's annoying that the WTLP is so off with the tesla, as it looks bad on paper. But on the other hand 0.2 m/kWh difference between summer and winter, the real world range and actual efficeincy is great. I realise the Mustang won in the summer test but it will cost you 20-32% more per mile in electricity which is a pretty big difference over the life of a car, even more so with rising unit costs or if you use public charging a lot.

Ha. Coming from Winnipeg, Canada (where we gleefully joke about our 80C temperature range: +40C - -40C), the 3C - 6C temperature range of your test constitutes a nice spring day. Here is my REAL cold weather report. In short, cold weather knocks the range down brutally. We have a 2021 Chevy Bolt with resistive heating, with a stated range of 417km. My experience is that, for every degree below 0C, you can expect a one percent degradation of range. So, -40C = a 40% reduction. But I point out that an ICE vehicle is way worse but we tend to not notice the reduction; we just go to the gas station more often. But the thing is: with a long-range vehicle like a Bolt, it's not so big a deal because you still have 250-ish kms range, even on the coldest day. The key is having a home charger. With an overnight charge, you're ready to go the next day and you don't really notice the range reduction. But here is the huge positive: EVS are WAY better in the cold. Unlike ICE cars, which labour tremendously when first started (and are consequently super-inefficient), EVS are like a hair dryer. You turn them on and they just go. I find the cold weather driving experience for an EV far superior to ICE.

Yes, having someone in the UK test cars for winter driving mileage is a joke. So the EV's mileage drops by 20-30% when temp goes from 25C to 5C HOLY CRAP what does it do when temp drops to -20C? That's not winter at all, where is the snow and ice and the sub 0ºF tests?

People just won’t accept that they do far less miles than they think. Also, if you are a sensible driver and stop for a rest when you should most EVs are perfectly adequate. You just charge while you take a break.

Well said 160-200 miles is enough driving before you need a quick break and in uk the motorway service areas in last couple of years it takes 15-20 mins to get family all to the toilet and adults to get a coffee and maybe quickly drink it etc . Over the last 10000 miles in last 6 months just for pleasure even in winter weather and bad weather and motorway speeds we averaged only 16 mins per session at superchargers in a 3 sr+ we done lots of long journeys and found you feel more comfortable and refreshed driving a ev stopping abit more than driving 300-400 miles non stop in a fossil car and feeling tried etc . But we even did 700 miles round trip in under 1 day in our 3 in November with no planning and was no problem so it’s very possible to do nice road trips in a ev and feel good when you get to your destination as opposed to feeling tried and ready for bed if you did 700 miles in one round trip same day in fossil car ! And it’s also an adventure to go somewhere in a ev like drive 450 miles after tea just to see some Xmas lights ! For 100+ £ in fuel that’s a no but for less than £20 that ok 👌

Plenty of videos doing that . Like us nearly 10000 done in 6 months lots of mixed trips motorway speeds bad weather every day use mid winter too with heating on etc averaged 3.77 miles per kWh total and was getting 6s September and worst seen was low 3 in - 5 c on bad weather motorway trip heat on etc but getting mid to high 5 s all ready this year on flat 22 mile trip . And saved more than £2700 last year alone over 15000. Miles in last ev Zoe ze50 and now Tesla model 3 sr+ . £600-700 + saved this year alone depending on what price you pay for fuel ! And £350+ saved just this month so far alone in not buy fossil fuels!

The price new £35,000 upwards & the ridiculous driving range & charging time with the lack of infrastructure makes any electric car here in the Devon & Cornwall a non starter. The town where I live has ONE 7.4KW charging point. You have to drive 5 miles for the nearest 50kw & there are only 2 at each supermarket. Then it is 10 miles to the next one.If I drove from home on a day out to Cornwall 130 miles. I wouldn’t get there on 1 charge in the winter, then I would have to charge again on the way home adding 1 + 1/2 hours to the day. We don’t have a motorway at all. We have thousands of terraced houses who would not have the ability to charge at home.Added to all this the household incomes here in the South West just make Electric Cars new completely unaffordable. Another car review Channel did an electric car test with towing a caravan 100 miles driving range. You wonder why people are not buying electric cars.

@Alan Cobbin you are assuming one can charge at home... think wider, those that live in apartmentens, row house that isn't allowed to install a charger etc etc. there's so many variables and you just assume EVERYONE buying an EV lives in a house and can charge over night.

@Alan Cobbin If you have cheap night rate electricity, you also have higher rate day time rates which should be taken into consideration, and filling up a typical car for £100 means you'll get a much higher range mileage than fully charging an electric vehicle. Good few sensible price evs can do the 130 mile trip without charging and most don’t take 1-1.5 hours to charge we have do 700 miles round trip in under 1 day with about 60-70 mins total charging in mid winter bad weather motorway speed at a cost of £40 total in a 3 sr+ so would’ be faster in long range maybe 30-35 mins,so do that in summer you would be look maybe 40 in long range maybe 20-30mins total charging , so if you can drive 700 miles without stopping for food toilet and coffee and a rest your better than us !
