A lot has been happening at RRHQ 2.0 behind the scenes and today's video is an electrical and gas update. As the days get shorter and colder, electrical is necessary for good lighting to work under and gas will be vital to heat my space with the radiant heated floor system. Make sure to subscribe to the channel to follow along with the interior as I continue to work on the electrical and install the radiant heat boiler system with my buddy Eric from ‪@mechanical-hub‬

Went with Barrina LEDs in my garage. Super easy install, flexible location, linkable but most importantly, super bright. Way better than my original tube fixtures.

I built a couple of Aircraft Hangars, and the best lighting I ever used was these used sodium lamps that I purchased and hung, or rather, my electrician hung. Nice lights. Hmmm, maybe they were 3 phase, cant remember, long time ago. Herb

I've done quite a few large spaces and I usually go with more lighting and add dimmers so you can tune the lighting to the situation

I have a 50x60 with 18ft walls. I used Hyperlite UFO High Bay on Amazon. Theyre pretty bright. I have 12 or so. I did install some side lights to walk around at night without turnign on the bright UFO high bay. I used 150w and you can get 200w.

I just built my 30x40 shop 2 years ago. 12’ tall ceilings and we stick framed everything, no metal. And interior done out of OSB. I used a 6” pancake style 1,200 lumen flush mount light. They are cheap and easy to install and put out tons of light. I wanted a flush mount look. I can send picks if you are interested.

I’m installing some MaxLite Wallpacks and a shoebox (area light) for exterior. They have some really affordable control options, including for their highbays. May be worth a look. The one thing that will matter with filming is flicker. Most LEDs flicker (Use slo mo on your phone and pan around your space). One company I know of uses T8 retrofits and are flicker free and that is Energy Focus. They designed lights for military submarines. When placing lights, you want to think about where you want light and how it will shadow. They put the lights in the center of the my kitchen. So when I’m cutting on the counter or working at the stove, I shadow my work area making it difficult to see what I’m doing. Hope this helps.

If you are looking for a light less harsh on your eyes, trying going for a little warmer kelvin. Maybe 3500 instead of 5000. Also, generally with lower ceiling we put 6” wafer cans rather than high bays as the light doesn’t have as much time to spread out.

The online lighting calculators are useful, but for a space like yours I'd go to a local light fixture distributor and work with one of their professionals to figure out what fixtures to use, their lumens/cri/diffusion/etc., the number of fixtures to use, their spacing and so on. As a general rule high bay fixtures are used when the ceiling is around 15' or higher, switch to a conventional type fixture where the ceiling is lower than that. You definitely have different zones that will require different layouts - the main open space, under the mezzanine, and on the mezzanine itself (plus the bath and mechanical rooms, as well as exterior lighting and maybe also exit and emergency lighting - I don't know what's required for your type of building in your area.) I think it's worthwhile to stick with name brands, you can buy fixtures online for less but like anything else you get what you pay for....Lithonia and Columbia are a couple reputable brands but there are others, plus it will depend on who reps for what companies in your area. Your electrician should be able to recommend distributors in your area. Note that you don't necessarily need the same level of lighting throughout the whole space - include some task lighting over the workbench where you want it really bright, but for the rest of the space that's mainly going to be for storage the requirements are much less.

Rust Bucket Restos just put in shop lighting... hexagonal and soft... within the last couple of weeks. I like those lights... and I thiink Building Jay's Way ended up putting in the same lights I think. Might not be your style... but I liked them in both locations.

on your outside walls you can run Romeo without puncturing your Air control layer. Instead of using the 3 1/2 or deeper single gang boxes, using 4x4 x1 1/4 boxes with a cover plate. if you have to go vertical through your Girts, slot them and plate them.

If that's going to be a work bench area, where you were first checking with the light meter, you can always add under cabinets lights. I assume you will have upper cabinets in that area too.

In my shop I went against my lighting architect and quadrupled the lights but made sure they are on dimmers. I used high bays for 18 foot ceilings. I have 4 circuits with the light circuits being same as lighting architect but the other 3 offset to his design. I normally only use 2 on and eliminate the shadows from equipment. I would next time use lower lumen lights in same locations but only 2 circuits. I do prefer the 4 circuits over the original design. The mess to add more lights after would be more costly and time consuming than the additional cost for my current lighting.

2‘ x 4‘ LED panels made for drop in ceilings produce a very widespread light and don’t have a hotspot. Some models have adjustable color temperatures so you can decide that later.

The problem with the lighting , is that it changes when you're near a window . Time of day , sunny or cloudy , all affect what you see indoors . Wearing a hat definitly helps with the glare , especially when you're extremely light sensitive like myself .
