Panel Upgrade, Interlock, and Portable Generator Wiring Part 2

In this video the portable generator wiring is completed by installing an interlock and inlet device box on the exterior. This includes the installation of a 30 amp, 240 volt feeder for the connection from the generator to the electrical panel snd loads. I hope you enjoy this video!

It might be worth explaining bonded and floating neutral. Most portable generators are bonded and before using a bonded neutral generator it must be converted to floating. There are some great KZbin videos explaining and showing what must be done. Great video! As a retired electrician I enjoy watching,

So if a generator is bonded at the neutral, remove the bonding jumper, and the 10/3 or 6/3 (depending on watts of generator) will have the neutral and ground bonded at the main panel?

I played electrician with wiring a Generator Transfer switch (Reliance). I converted the gas Generator(4,500 Watt) to propane. I used 6 Gauge wire for the run to transfer switch. It's all hooked up right, but I didn't need that thick of wire (all that NEC stuff). Haven't done jack diddle since. Other than that? -SAVE AMERICA!

Great job Ron. I like the attention to detail and giving the customer the instructions on the use of emergency power backup. Great idea 👍 when I did these upgrades I’d have the customer actually go through the process you shown so I felt better leaving the job etc.

why would the main switch need to be on when you installed the interlock ?

I was checking into setting up the bypass interlock on my main panel for a temp aux power back up power generator, but my panel has two separate doors one side has the meter and the main shut off and the other side has all the breakers. There's no knock outs for the new aux breaker to set up the lock out. Is my only practical alternative a new panel?

I installed a generator inlet like this. I didn’t follow the proper shutdown process when I tested it. I think I shut off the generator while still powering the house circuits. One of my hard wired smoke detectors started sounding, I think it got fried, I had to replace it. Now I will follow the proper procedure. My install was inspected by the county and passed (cost me $246 for the permit).

Very informative Ron .. Like the instructions you left. My concern is that the homeowner will put all the breakers back on and trip/stall the generator. A knowlegeable homeowner is always a pleasant experience on jobs like this. One question.. is NM cable allowed to be installed on an exterior installation for the twist lock ?

How often do you get contracted to do a Kohler or Generac automatic generator install when it's feeding 100+ amps? My parents did a Generac right after Sandy, still took 8 months because of the backlog
