Great video. We use QO exclusively. Also do the bonding jumper. I like to keep neutrals and grounds separate (but bonded) in case they needed to be separated later like if a standby generator is installed.

About twenty years ago, my 100-amp service was upgraded to 200-amps. The electrician and his helper removed the cover on the outside service box. They were in a hurry and didn't wait for the power company to arrive to remove the meter box. My Florida county fined them for doing that. When they pulled the wires from my old service box, I asked them how they knew which wires were connected to which circuit in my house. They told me they would figure that out later. I believe they should have labeled the wires to indicate which breaker they attached to. I know I'll see how this is done in Part 2.
@electricianron_New_Jersey2 күн бұрын
How do you know for sure they are all labeled correctly in the first place? Legit question b because shit gets added like twin breakers and and if it's not labeled/ changed correctly then than how am I supposed to do it right the first time if I take the word from the pervious 'electrician' that was there??

@@electricianron_New_Jersey@electricianron_New_Jersey Hi Ron, I appreciate your reply. I have that same panel in my house, circa 1985. It is rated for 10 tandem breakers allowable per the panel schedule. Of course, I’ve got 10 installed. Had to install additional ground bars to correct all of the doubled up and combined neutrals/grounds they did back in the day. A 30 space just isn’t enough these days. It’s still in perfect condition though, the bus is clean and none of the breakers are burned. Replaced a few noisy ones but other than that it’s solid.

Very rare to see issues with a QO. By the way, in case you didn’t know, the double tap neutrals were permitted until about 2002 or so. Just FYI.

Nice work on flipping the panel. I'll never understand guys that insist on keeping the main breaker on top, even when the service/subpanel entrance cable is at the bottom. Makes no sense to have those thick conductors looping around the panel taking up space. They're also always live (unless meter pull), so if someone slips with a screwdriver punching a knockout or a dummy uses the wrong kind of panel cover screws, that's going to be a bad day. One thing I don't like about QO (as opposed to Homeline) is how they bunch up the neutrals near the main breaker. Sure, if most branch circuits enter near it, it's neater not having those extra neutral wires running all over, but good luck if you need to install GFCI/AFCI later. I tend to use Homeline, and I like landing a circuit's neutral as close to the breaker as I can on the neutral bus right under where the breaker goes. Makes it consistent with how the plug-on-neutrals look and means swapping to one of those breakers is easy.
@electricianron_New_Jersey8 күн бұрын
@@bnasty267 I’m not sure what you’re referring to but this panel is a plug-on neutral so if you choose a plug-on neutral AFCI or GFCI breaker then you’re good to go with less clutter.
@bnasty2678 күн бұрын
@@electricianron_New_Jersey I just meant that if the QO main breaker is on top, and the neutrals are shortened to land on the neutral bus (at the top), they aren't long enough to reach down to a breaker that needs the neutral (GF/AF) if later converted. Usually not an issue, but if a circuit extension triggers the need to add an AF breaker later, the neutral may need extending. Not an issue here since you flipped the panel so the neutrals are full length.

No, and in New Jersey it wouldn't be required under the Rehab Subcode which specifically states "panel change only, no emergency disconnect required." So I play by those rules. Should you not have put a barrier over the open meter socket between the top lugs of the meter base and the open socket where the meter was installed. I assume the top lugs are energized. This would prevent some one from getting into live power. Other wise great job as usual. BTW how about doing a tutorial on bonding and grounding and the purpose use of the bonding jumper and why it is to removed from all panels that are not the first point of disconnect. A lot of new electricians don't under stand this jumper "even some older ones. When I first started as an electrician "over fifty years ago", " I am now retired" I was told by a lot of electricians the the ground and neutral are always the same. This is true if the bonding jumper is in place.
@electricianron_New_Jersey8 күн бұрын
@@lesterwatson8519 That’s a great idea for a video. Ground and neutral are absolutely not the same thing. The grounded “neutral” conductor is a current carry conductor whereas the equipment grounding conductor is never a current carrying conductor.

Better off with a Challenger or one of the others that use interchangeable breakers which cost far less. You probably could have done that job for half the cost.
@electricianron_New_Jersey9 күн бұрын
Yes, they're expensive. I know. My customer had QO previously and I specifically asked him if he wanted the same premium product. Believe me, my customers know the costs prior to doing any work. Occasionally, troubleshooting and repair cost more than originally quoted because the scope of work has changed. The bottom line is Square D QO is the champion of premium electrical products.
