Pikes Peak race car Ep9 - Problems

It's time for another race car update.
In this episode we finally reveal what name we're going to call it thanks to you guys, the most popular suggestion was "Bug Zappa".
We have the proper driveshafts fitted to it at last, which means I get to experience what all that Tesla performance unleashed in a car a fraction of the size and weight of a Tesla is really like. But it's not all good news. We encounter some problems too.

I like your channel and content alot. Great work. The only thing I dont get with focus on the electric choice is to express the power by destroying tires with smoke and screeks as the petrol heads has done. Elevtric drive is about silence, controlled torque, speed and a more sustainable choice. Please consider showing the power in another way. 😎

Very nice stuff guys! I've been waiting for many years for the era when electric cars would smoke petrol cars. Many years ago I was playing with RC cars and I was building brushless/Lipo cars that where making rings around nitro cars. I could totally see the potential and I was in love with the simplicity of those beasts.

On the handbrake, add a switch that disconnect rear motor. Then you have no need for the HUGE stick. Added bonus is you can then pull the handle enough to engage the switch to use it to engage FWD.

Brilliant fella. What a toy!. So I have a few qns. Where will you be racing it? Is it a track car or a rally car or a bit of both? I assume there are other "manufacturers" making similar cars or you'll be the only car in the race. What will the range be for race. The electrical connectors for the power steering etc look quite exposed, what's going to keep them dry? Will you be fitting a bonnet of sorts. Brilliant bit of engineering and yep good engineering comes from R&D, or just by trying stuff out until it breaks.. Keep these videos coming Moggy, they're fantastic.

A torque absorber would stop the initial energy-shock bending the motor mounts..

A viscous coupled torque absorber (a la Ford Sierra 4x4) between the motor shaft and drive shaft might give you a bit more torque-damage protection..

Well, I suggest you think over the engine mounts again. In the Tesla ones the movement is restricted by their lodge. The standard rubber mounts have no restriction and the rubber can not cope with the forces.

What a fantastically bonkers project. From your short test runs it looked very much like throwing a high performance electric RC race car around, except without radio gear and You inside it ! Completely nuts in the best possible way. I'm too old and broken to drive full size vehicles these days but Your antics have inspired me to get on with my 4x4 offroad MK2 LWB Transit Supervan project. 1/10 scale electric with 3 phase 32,000 RPM brushless motor, LiPo battery and ESC that can peak out over 200A.. I'm sure You will know about the real full size Supervan projects and I reccon You could do an EV Supervan that would peel the paint off the others as You pass them. All the best from a crazy retired electrical engineer in Scotland who just loves fun with lots of electrons. That Bug Zappa is going to be proper mad on track for sure!

er, why on a car with a bi-directional 600bhp on the back axle do you need a "brake based" flyoff handbrake? Simply control rear motor torque independantly from the front and you can choose to either grossly underspeed or grossly overspeed the rear axle, hence introduce a huge rear tyre slip ratio and hence reduce lateral load across that axle? The tesla motor has enough torque and response to pretty much nulify it's own inertia several times over.....

What an AMAZING MACHINE! One thing I would suggest, for safety, have a contact for the steering wheel sothat you are stuck in neutralas long as the steering wheel is dismounted. Breathing on that throttle in gear with NO STREERING WHEEL ATTACHED might proof fatal. Take care!

as for the artist's work... well I get the point that he kept it within the realm of vintage cars - but from a realist and philosophical, and urban planning perspective. MAN, things would have been WAY FKEN different if the world had gone electric cars staring in the 1920's. Actually, that whole nostalgic gas station diner highway vibe probably wouldn't exist. We would have undoubtedly developed rail systems for longer trips, and kept cars for local trips - and that would have probably been a good thing. But I do love some late 80's/ early 90's gas cars that wouldn't have ever existed if not for car history.
