AnT wOorD I understand both sides. I think she means the “hyper-nit-picky” types. They interfere every 2 minuets with more “instructions” for the artist and tell them they’re doing it wrong etc. If it is wrong yeah speak up, but if you agreed and wanted the stencil the artist designed and then pick it apart what is the artist supposed to do? Change it mid-tattoo? Picky is what you SHOULD be, but be picky during the design and placement, after that don’t nitpick. Obviously if the artist is NOT doing your tattoo how you agreed then say something, but don’t do it during the tattoo that’s being done how you agreed for it to be

Totally agree with all of these except #10. It's something that is going to be on this person's body for the rest of their lives. If they get the stencil put on, and it looks different than they imagined or they don't like the placement and they want to tweak it, I don't see a problem with that. All I've ever done is made mine bigger, but if people want to make small changes to the original sketch to make it exactly what they want, they deserve to. Like you said, good tattoos aren't cheap. They should get what they want for all the money they're putting into the piece.

+Astarte Astaroth Have you ever gotten a custom piece? Where an artist sketches something up for you from your ideas? They usually show you it when you show up for your appointment. You may love or hate it, and want to change what they did. That's their job is to create art for you that you like. For a good artist you're paying hundreds to thousands of dollars for that piece, a little inconvenience to them to change the sketch shouldn't be an issue. Not everyone wants to just pick something off a flash sheet or copy something they found on the Internet.

it still isn't the tattoo's decision on where the tattoo is placed. Honestly I could care less if the tattooist has other clients. They aren't working on those clients right now. They're working on me. If I don't like the way its placed, yeah, I want it changed. Im not saying changing the stencil, im just saying change the placement. any GOOOD tattoo artist will say " we can change the placement as many times as you want until we get it too a good position you like since its going on your body for the rest of your life". Definitely don't agree with 17. Some of us have allergies/sensitivities to certain ingredients and can't use the specific cream every damn tattoo artist seems to want us to use. People get sooo offended whenever I post on Facebook the reminder that tattoo shops aren’t the place for kids. If you can pay for a tattoo, you can also pay for a baby sitter. Kids not sitting still in a tattoo shop is incredibly stressful and dangerous. Buuuuut some people still accuse me of ‘hating kids’ and they want to use the excuse “oh, my child is just curious’. Kids are actually banned in the shop I work in! Thank god haha each artist has their own room, and the max room capacity is *always* 3 - the artist, client, and client can bring *one* friend. And in the lobby you have to either be waiting for an appointment, or waiting to book an appointment. If you're not old enough to get work done, you're not allowed in the shop. No exceptions. You get the odd parent that thinks their kid is a friggin god, but other than that our clients are super appreciative.

I love kids and feel like there are a lot of places they're unfairly banned from but a tattoo shop is not a safe place for kids. Parents aren't able watch their little ones very well while sitting still for the artist and they can get into things (like needles and ink) then you end up having to make a trip to the doctors.

April Mckenzy It’s still stressful to the artist tattooing you. Sitting quietly or not, the artist will still be uncomfortable and constantly looking over at them to make sure they’re not going to get into anything or touch anything they shouldn’t be. It’s not recommended to have a kid sitting in an operating room for all the same reasons it’s not recommended for them to be in a tattoo shop.

Art is copying stuff... with a twist sometimes I guess. Depends on whether it's realism, impressionism, etc etc, or your own twist. I mean I guess abstract isn't copying... The point is, most tattoo shops don't have great artists... So if I bring in a design, whether it be my own or one I found, I would expect it to be done. With a stencil especially, there shouldn't be any complaining.

Like others, I don’t agree with #10. However, if I wanted changes after a stencil that I agreed to is applied, I would pay for the artist’s extra time. I have a right to be happy with my tattoo, and the artist has a right to get paid for anything out of the scope of the normal tattooing process and quote, including multiple revisions. I don’t think it’s right to get upset with a client if they don’t like the look or placement of a potential tattoo once the stencil is applied. It’s their body, and their tattoo, and they shouldn’t feel pressured to say yes to something they are not confident about for fear of upsetting their artist.

Damien Brafford - I don’t consider it a waste of the artist’s time if I am paying them for it. As I said, if I ask for revisions after the stencil is applied, I would absolutely pay for the time and effort it requires. Sometimes it is hard for people to visualize how a tattoo will look in the chosen location before the stencil is applied. I see nothing wrong with someone changing their mind, as long as the artist is compensated appropriately. The customer is not always right. But they are paying for a service, and it is the artist’s responsibility to do what they can to make sure the customer is happy (within reason, of course). If the tattoo artist is not amenable to changes in order to please the person paying for their service, then they should find a different line of work.

If you’re referring to #4, as an artist you would copy someone else’s work if that’s what the customer wanted? That could involve copyright issues and what Linda said made perfect sense. A tattoo artist with integrity wouldn’t straight up plagiarize someone else’s work. They could do the design but just tweak it a bit in their own style. And it’s not like they would change anything without informing the customer first.

I highly doubt that when a client shows up with a picture they want to be tattooed, the artist does through google search to make sure it is not stolen from anyone. I designed my own tattoo. I don't think they searched "all existing tattoos" to make sure I didn't just steal someone elses. Damn i would be offended if designed my own tattoo and worked hard on it and the artist just changes it...wtf. I searched for the artist that would be compatible with my artist style -that's normal. But don't freaking change something I worked hard on.

My first tattoo I got was for my PTSD/sexually assault survivor tattoo and I walked into a shop that I found after researching and told him what I wanted but I wanted him to surprise me and that I don't care about price since it's meaningful to me. When I got to my appointment he showed me the design and I started crying because it was better than I could've imagined and he gave me a discount since I told him price didn't matter this was my final step on overcoming my struggles. My worst client was a lady getting a tiny purple zodiac symbol on her wrist. It took less than ten minutes after the initial set up but she still managed to piss me off more than anyone else I can recall. She wouldn't stop moving. She wouldn't shut up. Her spouse kept leaning in over her shoulder so they could make out (Gross!). She tried to put her cell phone down on my workstation twice. She snarked that she had never worked a tattooist so high strung or bossy before. When it was over, she spent several minutes looking at it and then said "It's perfect" in a disappointed voice. I think she was trying to find something to complain about but couldn't. The whole encounter was absurd and I still wonder if they were fucking with me on purpose.

People on their phone move, and aren't paying attention to the artist, especially when the artist is trying to talk to them. People who bring too many friends can fill up a small shop, bump into other artists, make it harder for the artist to move around. And be VERY distracting. Parents try to make the kids do things the kid doesn't want, or talk them out of something creative and orginal for something more common. There is a difference between knowing what you want and micromanaging. If you did your reaearch, and choose a good artist you need to trust them to do the job you hired them for. You can't tell them how to do their job. Again, laughter moves the whole body. Do you want a clean tattoo, or to joke around and hang out? All she wants it people to think and be respectful. That's not asking a lot. And if you can't do those basic things, or you think asking for them is a big deal, either you're a spoiled brat, or a person who shouldn't get tattoos because they can't understand basic concepts like a moving person makes a wobbly line.

My artist is amazing and hilarious! Last year on my birthday, I was going to Murphy, NC to see a friend and visit the casino there. I wanted a tattoo for my birthday, so I looked on the internet to see if there were any in or near Murphy. There were two or three shops and I contacted them about general prices (sit-down fee, etc.) and was answered by both. I sent a few photos of some ideas that I had and only one contacted me back. I was given a reasonable estimate, told them when I'd be coming to Murphy, that I was bringing friends who may or may not also want to get some ink done, and everything was Gucci. On the day we were to arrive, I get a Facebook message from the shop telling me everything was ready for our arrival, what time were we expecting to be there, and they even told me to travel safely (we were driving through the mountains of Georgia) which was so sweet and thoughtful. At the shop, I found out that they had recently opened, so I was happy to help a new business. The guy, Benny, was hilarious and constantly cracking jokes. His wife was pregnant and so sweet. They worked together, she setting up appointments and him tattooing. We watched Star Wars Rogue One as we waiting on the stencil (I had a quote and wasn't sure what font and there was the placement of the tattoo itself. He wanted to make sure everything looked good where it was gonna be placed). While i was getting ink done, my friends were on the other side of the wall of his area watching. One of my friends (who always makes a point to make me laugh during times i'm not supposed to...like when i was having my Monroe pierced...damn her Cher impressions...) was making me laugh and I knew my body was shaking and apologized. He said it was no problem and kept going. He was a talker anyway and we all just sat there having a conversation as he's doing my ink. Everybody would watch and comment on how good it looked and how the colors were nice or how the font was pretty...he didn't mind it one bit and tbh I think he would have been weirded out if we had been quiet the whole time.... By the way, if you're ever near Murphy, NC or just wanna go, Ink Nerds is the best...ask for Benny :)

The customer generally doesn't know what makes a good tattoo. It's a unique medium, and the placement and design are things that need to be considered from the artists perspective. As a music producer and sound engineer I can relate and understand your frustrations, specially when clients don't express very well what they want, and make you back track a lot of the work done, but at the same time I wanna smack you across the face. If you're making a business out of this then you gotta leave your artistic ego out of the picture. I make backing tracks for a living that are later used for Karaokes of pop music, so my job is to copy other peoples songs to the highest of details, to the point of almost not noticing mine form the original. Basically I'm a specialist at being a "Copy Machine". That's ok because THEY PAY ME TO DO THAT! I don't even like pop music, I never listen to it outside of the job, I like metal and heavy music. So If I feel like I want to express my own art somewhere and make my own original music I do that with my band, where no one pays us and we just do it for the love of music. There's a big difference between a client and a friend who's whiling to let you use their body as your canvas where you can express yourself artistically. Edit: sorry if it comes off as rude, if anything I only wanna help you separate the two in your mind, I know it helps me.

Tasmin Henson whats wrong with that? Even if something was “original” there is probably someone out there that has the same exact tattoo. I understand wanting to keep things original because I am an artist myself, but, it’s not like people are gonna stop wanting an exact replica of something.

Naysia I agree, out there people are going to steal tattoos forever, doesn't make it right. An artist spends their time making a custom piece for my body then it should be on MY body, the only tattoo I have that someone else has is a matching tattoo~ if you can't see how stealing tattoos is wrong please go watch some videos on the subject~

Oh man, all of the things I've wanted to say to my clients... I've been tattooing for twelve years now, in a shop and also solo, and I can totally relate to most of these. I'm glad someone was honest enough to put it out there so that maybe people will keep things in mind the next time they go to get a tattoo. Having said that, I've also gotten tattoos from several different artists, so I've been on both sides and can understand how the client, as well as the artist, can do things that would come off as annoying. When I was getting my back piece done, my artist was the one who wanted to have a bunch of loud friends hanging around and take a twenty-minute smoke break every half hour while I just wanted to zone out to some music and get the thing finished, so the boat can definitely rock both ways on this one. I think the best advice to both the client and the artist is just to be kind and considerate to the other person, because really, there's a level of discomfort for each of you.

I don't get how some of these are complaint worthy? " One friend maybe". I always bring a friend. I need a hand to hold. And number 10? Whats wrong with num 10? If im paying over $200 for a tattoo yeah, Im gonna make sure its in the right spot. Also whats wrong with people using their own tattoo recovery shit? My tattoo artist recommended a cream for me and I used it and it irritated my skin so I use my own cream ( Mind you my tattoos have healed perfectly so.)

I’m sorry but the fact the piece is going to be on my skin forever is more important then you’re need to be original or feel validated. Maybe they’re looking at the tattoo a lot because it’s a fascinating process and unusual thing to do. Maybe they want to bring a friend to calm their nerves and share a big experience with someone they care about. The thing about them tanning or smelling though I get you that must be so irritating.

the fact is that tattoos been around longer than you where here , the fact is that artists have pride in what they do . the fact that a artist spent years and years and years perfecting the style they doing has nothing to do with you , you are the one walking to a shop , you are the one who likes what you see from the artist thats why you are there . so no it has nothing to do with you other than you choose a artist you like and you listen to that artist , that how you get the best work done .

jesco white It has EVERYTHING to do with the costumer. If an artist can't accept my way then I am going to an artist that does because I am the one that has to live with it. I agree that you go to them for a specific style but if someone wants a simple piece that is easily doable and they want to get it done there because of whatever reason, they should be able to do so without feeling guilty. Respect the artist. But the artist has to respect you too.

ofcourse there are plenty of options . but people who wants to go to a well reknown shop or artist should know that you dont come in there with your phone and start showing pictures of other peoples tattoos and so on , that maybe works in a shop that just do whatever tattoos that was my point . but artists that have a well known reputation and have spent years n years to perfect what they do YOU should know what your looking at when looking at the portfolio they have . and like i said hehe no they dont have to do anything if its not there style or if they feel you showing up something they cant be proud of doing , thats where `´ its not about you `´ come to play , a artist can say no , but hey there are many many shops and artists out there but if you want great work you should listen to the artist.

My favorite line I use is "if you don't know, I have no idea where to start" It also doesn't matter what I think of your choice. For me is more usuful when people bring me pics of cakes they like or details they like so i can compose a personalize cake for theyr taste but if you show what you dont like is useless and if you dont like anything how can i make something you gonna love?? Alot of you seem to get number 10 wrong. It's not about stencil placement that doesn't satisfy the customer. It's about people that change their minds about the template and want to change small things, so you have to go and make another one. 2Pac71x96x14 it doesn’t matter, if you’re paying for something permanent it needs to be done right the first time. @KaiPonVisp
@KaiPonVisp 7 жыл бұрын
Demetry Blair "or spend a few weeks perfecting the design" which is exactly the opposite of what a person who would be a number 10 client would do. A 10 would just walk in, say "I want this" and once the stencil is done go "You know what, I think I want this instead" which, in the long run, would indeed be annoying as all hell, especially if it happened over and over again with the same client. If you are not 100% certain what you want tattooed on your skin, maybe you shouldn't jump into getting one just for the fun of it.
@2Pac71x96x14
@2Pac71x96x14 7 жыл бұрын
Yes that's the point. When the template is done and the client is satisfied with it, the tattooer THEN will make the stencil (because the client obviously agreed). And after some time when the stencil is on the skin and you want to change small things.. well, congratulations. You belong to the annoying people categorized in number 10. :D

Most of the artists I've met when going with friends and trying to find the right place for me were super nice and just liked hearing you out and doing what you wanted. My only word of advice is to get a tattoo in a place you know you can cover. Don't get in somewhere that can discourage you from getting a job, maybe get one on your ankle or anywhere that gets covered by clothes without much effort.

As an artist myself (photographer/graphic designer) I HIGHLY respect everything you said about concentration and being alone to work in peace. And everything else you mentioned. My god did that resonate with me deeply. I’m planning on getting my first tat I just wish it was with you lol! Your tats on you are gorgeous AF! 💖 Thank you for your tips they surely will be easy for me to do since I’m a very introvert quiet person who zones out when getting pedicures or manicures. I rather them do the talking while I stay still and quiet lol. Happy to have found your channel! 🙏🏼

As much as I appreciate a subject like this being brought to light and discussed, I think one should be done on the subject of tattoo artists to avoid also. So while we can take this knowledge with us to our next tat sessions in order to not be annoying, we should also know what the warning signs are for neglectful shops and artists. Some artists like to charge professional prices for art that looks worse than prison shit, but can hide it well. Just saying.

If someone has tons of tattoos and they have their own aftercare process, and your tattoo didn’t heal well, it’s likely your fault as an artist. It’s fine. Sometimes tattoos don’t heal perfectly. But to tell someone who is covered in tattoos with a history of their tattoos healing well, that suddenly it is the fault of their aftercare process …the same aftercare that was fine for their first 30 tattoos…is a little arrogant.

This is why I dont work with the public. It's a nightmare.... alot of neurotic people out there. Bad energy.... Maybe you need to create something which will help weed out these people. There not good customers and they end up being a headache. Blessings to you.

But it's our body right? We get to keep a tattoo of our choice. You just sound like you really hate your job and need excuses. All my tattoo artists were kind and agreed to what I wanted.

TED -dy as in copied another design on you? If that's the case and they made no customisation at all to your tattoo or even mentioned that the design you wanted was already on somebody they aren't a very good artist.

I don’t really agree with 13 if you need to take breaks (even a lot of breaks) they shouldn’t feel like they are annoying you because that makes them uncomfortable to ask for one even if they need it. I had a 5 hour session and I’ve a small bladder I had to take 3 toilet breaks and it is what it is

My complaints about tattoo artists I've had: 1. Offering me painkillers. First of all, these people are not doctors, yes I'm in pain when my neck and the underside of my upper arms are being worked on, but I can take it, and I was a severe opiate addict who overdosed six times, and even the smallest buzz could lead to a relapse, this was at a reputable place in Venice C.A. and later on I realized a few of the artists supplemented their income by selling oxy. Not cool. 2. Acting super professional when we meet, then hitting on me awkwardly when i'm laying down in a vulnerable position. 3. Overcharging for something really simple just because the person looks like they have a lot of money. 4. BABIES AND SMALL CHILDREN. If you can afford a tattoo you can afford a babysitter, I don't like babies, not everyone does. Keep them away from tattoo shops, they get bored, overstimulated and they cry, I don't want the soundtrack to my tattoo to be your kid screaming and crying. Same with nice restaurants and movies not meant for kids. 5. Snobs. Some of my best work was done by a man who learned how to tattoo in prison, his shop is simple and clean, and it's located in east LA, he is amazing and will cover up gang tattoos for free, rich white kids who are underage constantly come in to get blasted thinking he'd do that because of where the shop is located. He won't, he knows your ID is fake, and he's not going to blast you with random crap he knows you'll regret later, obviously if you really want them you'll find someone. I got my first tattoos at 16, artwork from a Marilyn Manson album, which I actually do like, a snake wrapped around my lower leg which I had to retouch, and the classic nineties arm band with bats and pentagrams I had covered up. What you love as a teenager will change, just be aware of that.

Completely agree- no good artist would copy some tattoo off Google or Pinterest. Why would someone want to have someone else's tattoo on their body anyway?! Tattoo artists want to create original pieces not copy. It's also unfair on the client who has the original piece that was custom designed for them.

Loved this video :). My husband paid for me to get a half sleeve for my birthday and I was super nervous because even though I had gone in and given my tattoo artist some ideas I had no clue what he had actually come up with before my appointment. But in the end I have been so glad that I didn't interfere with his process and let him run with the idea because he had come up with the most amazing stuff! Love the tattoo he's done for me and when I'm ready to turn my half sleeve into a full sleeve he will be the one I go to :). I wish I was half as creative as tattoo artists are. You guys are amazing with what you do and how you do it!

Damn I feel like the dream client now. I thought this stuff was common sense. I stay still ( as much as I can because I’m sorry a girl gotta sneeze girl gotta sneeze. At least I give a warning tho 🤷🏻‍♀️) when I was having my chest tattooed a few days ago I was chewing gum so when he was close to my neck I wasn’t ms. Dragon breath. I showered before we left. I mean come on this is common sense people. And I also never talk the artists ear off. If they want to talk they will start a conversation. I never want to make someone uncomfortable that is creating there art on my skin. And spending hours doing it. I wouldn’t want someone talking to me while I’m concentrating. Js

Great video I gotta say, but I'll have to disagree with you about changing the project, for me I trust my artist and I'm always pleased but as a person with a good amount of tattoos I gotta say when I like it In a certain way I want it in certain way. For example I was doing a kind of bird(a specific) that represented a loved one who passed away and we actually believe it or not, changed the project 10 times but my artist trusted my vision and I trusted his so I got really great results.
