I feel sorry for people who care what the neighbours think. But then I regularly shop at Aldi, and have even shopped at Lidl. I also shop at Tesco, because it's delivery service is excellent, which sadly Asda's is not. And, I recently shopped at Sainsbury's only to be very disappointed by the quality/freshness/longevity of the products I purchased. I don't think it was about expectations; Sainsbury's quality was simply below Aldi, Tesco, and even Lidl. If indeed I had expectations, it was simply that I didn't expect Sainsbury's to deliver a consumer experience below the cheapest of the other chains. If it had equalled Aldi I'd have been happy enough, even for the extra money, because the fact is that Aldi generally impresses me...except for the 'relatively' limited range. Anyway, I think there's nothing wrong with Skoda, and nothing inherently wrong with MG, especially for the prices you can get one for. Also, as the technology is going to improve rapidly over the next few years, I think there's a certain logic in just getting the cheapest, as long as you can live with the range and can keep it charged easily enough. If you live in London, it's pretty much a no-brainer that any new car purchased for everyday driving should be an EV. Whether an MG is for you, comes down to whether you can keep it charged easily enough. If not, you're probably going to have to more than double the budget and get a Tesla, simply because if you don't have off-street parking, the extra range and the Tesla infrastructure is for sure going to make an EV far easier to live with. Lastly, remember that Tesla has only just got its quality up to a good level, nearly nine years after the Model S was first launched. MG is doing a decent job of bringing decent enough EVs to market at the right prices. And, importantly, the MGs are available to buy. No announcing and then no availability. Or the need to pre-order for delivery in one or two years time. It's also worth noting that many of the EVs currently offered by manufacturers have relatively low ranges and fairly ordinary performance levels. For example, VWs often hyped ID models are really nothing to write home about. For me, at the moment at least, it's either MG or Tesla. As always, YMMV.

Funny isn't it - I also shop at Aldi... AND Sainsbury. And I found the quality of fresh food at Sainsbury to be excellent!! It just goes to show that most people's opinions are generally COMPLETE NONSENSE -and should be ignored......!!!

The roof bars are for decoration only in China too they were never designed for loading, I can only assume there was a cock-up between SAIC and MG UK when it was imported. This issue and the issues regarding the BMS updates to the ZS put me off the MG brand a little so we went for an ID3 instead, I know, I know but it's been fine for us so far touch wood! Got to agree with the conclusion though when we were buying ours it was working out at something like £23k+ and the ID3 wasn't much more in the end so the monthlies worked out the same but at a lower price it makes sense. If they can keep the same price when they bring out the newer face lift model with more range and more tech I think they'll be onto a winner.

what's kind of crazy is ALREADY MG have released a video showing what the newer MG crossover and refresed MG estate will look like - and the front end looks a lot better. Some really impressive specs. Guaranteed more range - as they didn't mention it in the video. So if they're refreshing this in 6 months then this will hammer the resale value of this one. Likely the newer, longer range one will still come in under the £35k goverment grant too. The new looking one I would buy on looks alone!

MG5 refresh will not be in UK until Q2 2022, only being released in Europe LHD in 2021. It was released as a market tester here after customer/dealership feedback.

There is a big difference between sub £35k and £20k. It’s why I bought the MG5 now as it was clear they would do a proper refresh soon after and would charge more for it, this model is a bargain and we won’t see anything like it for this price for years to come.

@@purestdj good point. With the current one retailing for £21ish k according to EVMAN it's a bargain for the size.

Funnily enough MG has now made its second good above expectation EV. What will be interesting is if they make a MG3 sized EV with either this battery or their 44kwh battery. Based on the prices of there current EV range this hypothetical car could be below the 20k mark, still a lot but significantly cheaper than models such as the Corsa E and Honda e

This car has one fundamental benefit over other EVs which it is an estate - where are it's competitors in this sector? For anyone needing to use a children's buggy or wheelchair, this is the only vehicle that fits the bill.

I’d love to know also where you saw a tow bar kit. I tried three companies already and nobody’s willing to supply. It’s only for a bike carrier because of the aforementioned roof rail issue.

The next gen model is going on sale in Europe later in the year with a longer range. No news on if it will be made in right hand drive. It would be good to get the new model in the UK.

@@neillgatley8770 aha, found it :) - can take or leave new looks, agree it makes current model look v dated - new better range appears mainly at expense of performance - big reduction in acceleration, so mainly s/w change - needs bigger battery for sure, I imagine price will be same with this type of low cost upgrade

It will also have the ZS's driver assists, a (trailer) towing capacity and slightly higher range. I'm betting the price will rise though. I did go and look at one of these today and I must say they look better in the tin than on screen. In terms of lifetime ownership it would be cheaper than my Dacia. I'm sorely tempted.....does ebay still have rules about selling children?

Regarding autonomous driving systems. My suggestion is the manufacturer can nominate a percentage of how effective they are. Then, where there is an accident which the autonomous system did not avoid, the manufacturer and driver can split the bill in accordance with the percentage nominated by the manufacturer. E.g. if the manufacturer says it works 10% of the time the manufacturer pays 10% of the damage. If the manufacturer says it works 90% of the time the manufacturer pays 90% of the damage.

As an MGZS driver... I’d have gone for the MG5 and not regretted it, although I’m glad I didn’t - MG pilot is awesome for me (disability makes the assistance on motorways really awesome). Not sure the boot opening is quite good enough for a wheelchair though...

I love the idea of a full BEV estate and well done MG for bringing the first to market. But the situation with the roof bars is a real shame and would be a deal breaker for me. Key purpose would be flexible vehicle for holidays and weekend trips for me with the ability to carry bikes and/or kayaks on the roof. Hopefully that's something that can be sorted asap. Works with the Kona I've got at the moment (can use the roof bars!) but getting a 17 foot sea kayak on and off the roof of a high vehicle can be really awkward.
