Not sure about inland but most of Canada deploys salt on the roads for safety in winter and having a vehicle that's not rust resistant is not a fixable issue really. Prices for Jeeps have soared as well right when people were showing interest. Stellantis talkin about discounts being the problem well it didn't help the other brands! Maserati has the same problem with quality. The other auto makers at least try hard to keep up with the competition but those bean counters couldn't let go!

A tiny mobil phone battery manufacturer BYD decided to jump in. Toyota pulled out of Tesla after two years which Toyota invested as a startup venture. Chinese government invested in billions for the charging infrastructure. Now the skies of Chinese cities are blue. 20 years! will any elected western leaders can do that? Dude.. how much range that shit EV will manage to make? I have diesel A6 station wagon and every summer I tow a big caravan and have great holiday.. If I need "range" extender, one 20L canister is good for up to 350km and can fit it anywhere.. "Charging" is about 6-7min for 0-100% and I have only about 1.5L more consumption towing 1400kg for many kilometers.. What is the point of 1000hp if the car can go about 250km in a single charge?!?! And when is cold or tow something the range to go 1/2 to 2/3 of the normal .. As for the "fun" the only one thing is - hey, see how can accelerate.. That`s all.. Here is a small example of pure fun - buy some old and very cheap BMW , MERC or any rear driven car . Then remove all the inners except the driver seat. Make a small track in the snow or on the field. Take some old tires to have(just in case) two canisters of petrol and you and the friends will have happy whole day going sideways... The only reason Honda merged with Nissan and Mitsubishi was due to pressure from the Japanese government. Facing the rise of Chinese EV manufacturers and a global shift in the automotive market, Japan likely pushed for the merger to consolidate resources, streamline innovation, and strengthen its domestic automakers’ position against international competition. It was also a strategic move to prevent a potential Chinese takeover or acquisition of struggling Japanese brands, safeguarding the country’s automotive industry from foreign influence.
@warheadsnation14 күн бұрын
It's not like Japan is a real free market country. There would have been plenty of ways to block a Chinese corporation from such a purchase. However, China would have retaliated, and that's the new factor.
@veerod38314 күн бұрын
@@warheadsnation You’re absolutely right-Japan isn’t a pure free-market country, especially when it comes to protecting key industries like automotive. They absolutely have tools to block foreign acquisitions, but the threat of Chinese retaliation adds a new layer of complexity. With China being one of Japan’s largest trading partners, any aggressive move to block acquisitions could lead to economic consequences, like tariffs or restrictions on Japanese exports to China. The merger could be seen as a preemptive strategy to avoid such retaliation while still ensuring their automotive industry remains competitive and resilient against external threats. It’s less about inability and more about playing the long game diplomatically.

Here's a use case that car makers need to consider: 1 in 3 Australian homes have solar panels. That number is still growing. Now, a massive number of people drive to work and can't use their solar panels to charge their cars on those work days. You want people to buy your cars? Make the battery modular and make them removable so some can be left at home to charge while you drive to work. Going on an extra long trip to a place that doesnt have petrol stations or EV chargers? Buy/hire an extra battery module and chuck that in the boot (similar to a jerry can of petrol for ICE cars). With the V2G / V2X thing taking off now, this is how a car/battery manufacturer can win the game. Am I missing something?
@paulstubbs767814 күн бұрын
Already out there, they are called 'Tesla power walls' etc. As for range extenders, Tesla is promising one for their Cybertruck, so lets see how that goes and if anyone will copy them. I have a caravan, and having a large range extender battery would be good , especially if it could be offloaded at the campsite to run things there and grab some charge from a few solar panels.
@MrThaiLuan14 күн бұрын
@paulstubbs7678 yeah I'm aware of modular home storage batteries for solar but they can't be installed into your car, I'm saying if the car has modular batteries that can be removed and charged separately so the car can be somewhere else and some of the batteries at home during the day charging. Then when you get home, swap out the empty battery or simply put all the batteries back into the car if you're going on a long trip. If you're not going on a long drive, just leave them home to power your home and save yourself from carrying all that dead weight. Your lighter car will accelerate faster, use less brakes, be more efficient.

@@zafir7007 that's a step in the right direction, but I wonder if they'll make it so people can do it themselves at home. I don't need to take my drill to Bunnings every time I have to swap out the battery on it, so the same freedom can be designed into the car battery. Obviously you can make the battery proprietary and keep it within your own eco system to make the most money from it. It can earn the manufacturer money with some special equipment necessary to remove the batteries safely. It can also earn them money by having a battery hire service, or that service might spawn by itself.

Electric cars are primarily sold because of government regulations. This is the only real reason. I live in the Netherlands, where owning a petrol car would cost at least €20,000 more! So, the sales of electric cars have nothing to do with market reality. The ironic part is that China is the main driving force behind electrification. Manufacturing an electric car is relatively simple compared to producing an internal combustion engine (ICE). The Chinese government heavily supports its automakers to dominate the market and potentially undermine the EU and American economies. People have no idea what’s really happening.

Stellantis will contribute to that aircraft company the carbon fiber body parts the plane needs - cars that are make from composites like the Chevy Corvette are where they're contributing to that company and yes, the company posted record profit but the key is how companies like Tesla set up their lines and how Stellantis can evolve. They've at least got some feelers in the right direction with the aircraft company and new EV models coming out this year, but agree with the Viking - objects in the rearview mirror are closer than they appear.

In a few years time, might be few auto makers left in the world,Tesla, few Chinese company(BYD,Geely, NIO, Xiaomi?) German company(BM, MERC, AUDI?)might be I am a pessimistic, German cars have to cooperate with American or Chinese, you need software to operate the EV, American has Android and Chinese has Harmonys os, but German choose american then“ be enemy of american is dangerous but to be friends of american is fatal!”.

In fact there has been talk of moving plants to Vietnam. So it goes on that tradition manufacturers are stuck in their paradigm.

Consumers no longer need or require so many car brands…… especially brands that are “stuck” in the 1990’s and 2000’s…… competition pushes poor companies out of the market, and forces good companies to look at themselves through a unbiased lens.

The US side of the business was always dysfunctional. They do have good EV tech in a lo of their French models and even their Italian models, and there are vehicles they have really got right. The biggest issue really, by far, is what used to be Chrysler Corporation, which has the problem that they focused on what they thought people in the US wanted--premium/luxury, performance, style--when if they looked at what most of what has been selling well in the US for some time, they would have realized that this was not a long term sustainable route.

I have a Stellantis EV. It’s a nice car but I have had issues with it (fixed under warranty). However, the list price of it is three times an equivalent Chinese car. It’s a company car so I didn’t pay for it, but that’s not sustainable, even with tariffs etc. Won’t be getting another one when I changer this year - Korean most likely (Tesla too expensive).

Not a single Legacy automaker has adopted the new production methods. They still sell expensive vehicles with way too many suppliers. Way overcomplicated. Saw lots of Legacy EV adds this weekend during the football games. Some looked promising. Just the prices are too high for the value delivered.
