@SurrealAntithesis2 күн бұрын
I like the look of the Ariya and from all accounts, it's a great ride. Unfortunately, the battery tech/charging, infotainment etc needs to be updated to compete with others, and its cost is a bit high. I would have seriously considered one if the price was right a couple of years ago, but it was never an option since it was taking too long to come to Australia. It's just being overtaken by other better and longer range / more efficient EVs coming out in 2025, so I probably wouldn't go with the Ariya the way it is at the moment, even it was available to buy. I still like the looks of it though.

Not just the leaf, their series hybrid Note potential too was not fully utilised. It had a 3 cylinder ICE probably without a flywheel but they ought to have upgraded the powertrain to a Free piston Linear Generator. TTR hybrid is also a possible integration of series hybrid technology. Several European automakers adopted this technology successfully around 2014 to mitigate the Diesel engine phase out.

Our very first EV back in 2014 was a Nissan Leaf Tekna, marvellous motor apart from the 60 mile range in winter ! We didn't buy the MKII as it was just the MKI with a new top bolted to it. If only they had increased the battery density getting the range to a ture 300 miles, it would still be relevant today.
@shabs2134Күн бұрын
Those old Leafs are still relevant today. I'm considering buying an old Nissan Leaf for £1500, it does about 60 miles to a charge. To me, it's far more relevant than other electric cars which are bloated and overpriced. I'm not sure why I'd ever need another electric car because the Leaf would only be used for local journeys and commutes, and I have my trusty petrol Audi A3 for everything else. So why on Earth would I (or anyone else) need more than this cheap and reliable setup when I can get such a cheap Leaf and any other petrol/diesel car to accompany it?

Some of my old ones I continued to see around my home town for many years. I have owned equally reliable Toyotas for 20 plus years combined but they were usually muuch duller cars to drive ( except my 1994 Celica with the 138 kw 3SGE 2 litre engine - fabulous driving car ). My current car is a 2008 Nissan Skyline sedan 350 GT. It has only done 17,000 km, so at age 68 it will probably last me until I can no longer drive. RIP Nissan.

Nissan is focussing on their existing profitable cars, which varies by market, for example in the UK Qashqai is no.3 and Juke is no.4 best selling cars in 2024. Rather than introduce new risk of developing and producing new model cars, which always are more costly and attract teething issues in the first few years, that requires either a bouyant marker or cash reserves to establish.

Adapt, change or go bankrupt. Nokia and Kodak were once leaders in their industries but were slow to adapt to new technology. Legacy auto dealers are a nightmare for legacy auto makers. They gouged customers trying to buy electric vehicles. Legacy auto dealers abused their customers by adding market price adjustments to gouge their customers for EVs They added pricey add ons and other costs to pump up the prices and their profits. Tesla has the right idea. Buy online. No hassle. No sitting in a show room for hours. No salesman BS. No crazy markups. No I have to see my manager BS. With Tesla you can buy a vehicle in 5 minutes or less online. The dealers have no one to blame but themselves. The dealers are dragging the legacy auto makers down with them. The problem with legacy auto makers having slow sales leads back to the legacy auto dealers. They try to talk people out of buying and EV an want to put them in a gasoline car. Many people hate going to legacy car dealerships. Many people call them stealer ships for a reason. New car, used car or going in for repairs you always walk out feeling cheated. People have no sympathy for dealers.

The Chinese Government stopped the majority of their subsidies at the end of 2022. This has already resulted in hundreds of Chinese NEV Companies going bankrupt. There were almost 500 Companies involved in NEV. Now it's approx 90 and is expected to continue rationalising until there are only around 25. All this information is public knowledge. Many of the remaining "subsidies" relate to favourable interest rates at Banks and City based rental agreements for Factories/Business premises. The Chinese Government had decided 20 ish years ago to transition from their reliance on Oil based vehicles (ICE Cars) to cut down their Oil Needs and also as a way of cutting pollution in their big Cities. This strategy has been carefully worked out. It is also a way to boost their exports of Vehicles. Now their message is, "Either stay as a local Car provider with Hybrids and BEVs of, to expand, you will need to export. The various Hybrids, as part of NEVs (New Energy Vehicles) will disapear, leaving only the BEV's.

If you watch Munro and associates, they have an excellent video on axial vs radial flux motors. It turns out that axial flux motors don't have a huge power density advantage as sometimes touted. What is the big advantage is in manufacturing. The tooling to make radial flux motors, which by the way the Nissan Leaf uses, are much more expensive to manufacture - the tooling is orders of magnitude more expensive and complex. Nissan unfortunately was on the forefront of electric cars when axial flux motors were not being made. I imagine they haven't amortized the costs of their radial flux motor tooling yet. Using axial flux motors allows much shorter production runs with unique motor designs without incurring huge costs. It literally encourages innovation.
@PeteLenz3 күн бұрын
