There's a bit of understandable confusion in this vid. Just to be pedantic, the Hypervolt or any other box that you have to connect AC charging to your EV is called (in the technical standard) an "EVSE" - "Electric Vehicle Supply Equipment". It is specifically NOT an "EV charger", although it is often referred to as that. The "Charger" - properly identified an "On-Board Charger" or OBC is a device that is in the car that ultimately controls the maximum charge speed (assuming the EVSE can deliver that maximum). In the MG Excite 51 pictured in the vid the maximum capability of the OBC is 6.6 kW. That is equivalent to about 28Amps at 230VAC. It is only a single phase OBC, so even if you plugged in a 3-phase EVSE, it would still charge only at a maximum 6.6kW. On the other hand, the MG Long range with 77kW battery has a different OBC capable of accepting 3-Phase supply at 16 Amps per phase from the EVSE and giving a maximum charge rate of 11kW. However, if only connected to a single phase EVSE, it is not made clear in the documentation what the charge rate would be. It is probably safe to assume it would be at least 6.6kW and maybe 7.2kW which is equivalent to 32Amps at 230V and the maximum that the standard provides for. Most larger EVs have 3-Phase capable OBCs that accept Single Phase at 32Amps (7.2kW) or 3-Phase at 16Amps per phase (11kW). Only a very few vehicles have larger - and more expensive OBCs - that can accept 3-Phase at 32Amps per phase (22kW) and that is the absolute maximum for AC charging defined in the Standard.

We have a Hypervolt Home 3 Pro and its absolutely brilliant, the feature set is really good. We have had no issues over the past year dispensing electricity to our 500e and our ID Buzz. We really like the LED modes

Hi Sam, I charge my 12 month old MG4 51excite in garage. From the home page I put charge page on full screen and and passenger window down. 19 times out of 20 it starts okay tells me charge speed on the screen and estimated time till full. Air con will slow charge, it settles in at 6.2kw. I get 50% in 4hours Occasionally I have to sit in the driver's seat and press lock and then start. Sometimes in winter and cloudy days I'll drop it down to 16A so I'm only using solar 😎. In Old Bar today heading to the Gong tomorrow. Will stop at Raymond Terrace, 12 Tesla chargers always work and never full. Merry Christmas Viking to you and yours ❤🎉

Just got a new MG4 two days ago, our 3rd EV. None of the problems you mentioned. Very strange. Locked, unlocked etc, shows charge speed on the app and screen, etc. Pretty hassle-free. Maybe this one was running on older software.

I charge my Tesla with a 3-phase Zappi. Cost about same, has a great app and will charge at 11kW. Set to Eco++ it will only use solar to charge the car. I added an EDDI (same brand) and now my hot water is also heated from solar only. That said, I would not recommend buying any wall charger today unless it is VTG capable (bi-directional).

Zappi is known to be the best if you have panels.. I also have a 3 phase one and have a Harvi harvester which tells the zappi how much is going to the car and how much your house is using in real time.. and at all times even when you're not charging the car.. you can see how much is exported to the grid based on how much you're generating from your panels.. it also has the lcd panel which is full featured.. easily work from lcd panel or app.. it smashes the hypervolt.. oh.. one last thing which was mentioned above, you charge with eco+ mode and it only uses solar without needing to schedule anything... it's automated set and forget

Sam, just in case you are unaware, black solar panels tend to be monocrystalline (better quality - higher efficiency) than those which appear blue in colour (which are polycrystalline).

Hi Sam. I just checked what 1500 Australia Dollars equates to in £ Sterling and was really surprised - so a premium. charger costs £750 over there. Price in UK currently is £630 (1260 Australia Dollars) + installation charge.

User error, Sam. MG4 charging is easy. Locked or unlocked - although you have to be unlocked to open the charge flap (opened with a simple push, like so many cars...) Without using the MG app: Plug in, start charger, wait a short time (30-60s) and it works. OR Start charger, plug in, wait a short time (30-60s) and it works. 🤷 Reliably easy-peasy. Using the MG iSmart app: Aah. Not such good news. It depends. Some people have no problems. Personally, I'm unable to manually start charging remotely through the MG app without faffing. A simple start charging command *always* fails on the first attempt. Unlocking or locking the car through the app seems to wake it up, then the start charging command might work. If not, repeat. I didn't have this issue until MG updated the app. I haven't tried scheduled charging. I believe you need 3 phase power at home for faster than 7kW charging. Expensive and pointless unless your car's onboard charger accepts and can make use of it. For example, the LR77 is the only MG4 capable of home charging at more than 6kW (up to 11). DC charge rates are of course much higher.

Hello from California! They Hypervolt looks good, maybe a bit pricey. How does it know what your solar generation is? Does it integrate with your inverter/battery system? This year we installed a FranklinWH battery system and added a Span load center and got their Span Drive charger to go with it (about US$700). It can do 11kW, but it can also load balance if your house has a smaller service level. The Span and FranklinWH integrate together, so the Span Drive knows how much solar is being generated and can derate to match the excess solar beyond my home and battery's needs (eg, what would otherwise go to the grid). It's winter up here, so it took a couple days to fill my Ioniq 5, but from the spring through the fall it will easily do it in a day.

With a solar system that big you should be able to charge more than two cars plus go off the grid completely, just get a decent battery. I have a pulsar plus charger, and it charges with or without an app.

A simple NEMA 1450 socket provides 240 Volts at 32 amps (minimum) and that's 7.5 kilowatts. So I see no need for a special branded "charger". With Tesla they allow 40 amps with their Charger, which allow a slightly faster charging rate, but I see no need for that as even at the slower rate it's only 3.5 hours to charge to 80% from 50%.

Solar isn't "free" during the day, you have a massive cost of buying the system, you don't mention the price. Are you disconnected from the grid with Zero bills? Charger purchase and installation costs all need adding into the cost of running the car, no mention of the time and range you added to the car in the video (after a lot of faffing about) And of course, the big one, a huge part of the population is away during the day, so not much point to lots of solar unless you add the extra cost of batteries.

Hi. I've got a much smaller system. My cost of production is 0.6 cents per kWh over 9 years. I get a feed in tariff of 8 cents but that will change next year (6 cents?). So far, the level 1 charger has been fine for me and I live in a regional area in Oz.

Pressing the unlock button will stop charging for a few seconds and then it will resume charging. This is normal behaviour for cars with a type 2 connector. This unlocks the connector so that you can unplug if you want to stop charging early (before the car has reached it’s preset SOC). Silly to keep walking around the car pressing buttons on the key fob.
