They don't even need to sacrifice range that much. A less powerful electric motor and a slightly smaller battery pack will mean less weight and less energy consumption, so the range won't really drop much.

Just over a hundred years ago Henry Ford kept reducing the price of the Model T year after year through production improvements. The Model T was produced for almost 20 years. You are correct about the possibility of battery costs continuing to drop enough that a Model 3 or Y might be several thousand dollars less expensive. Capitol cost savings by using what is already paid for can also reduce prices. And those robots might never join the United Auto Workers Union.

"Less camera system" - no, as Elon said Tesla is going full FSD on all their vehicles so any future vehicle will have everything to enable FSD. By this logic less camera systems is not possible since FSD is trained for certain camera setup that Tesla has on its vehicles. They will make cars cheaper by making them smaller in size, smaller and cheaper batteries and they will use new manufacturing technologies that they learned while developing next gen car and its manufacturing process.
@speedismyfriend

They will make them cheaper by making them lower performance, so you can put a much less powerful motor in and cheaper power electronic using a hybrid Si/SIC inverter. While I tend to agree on your view about the cameras, if all cars are going full FSD why launch a robotaxi at all. My view is that no current Tesal will ever run as a robotaxi even if Tesla gets the current setup to L4 because it makes no financial sense for a business to let its clients make money off it.

It won't get the tax rebate if it has a CATL battery. They could go with a smaller Panasonic battery. Price per cell would be higher but it would be lighter because of the higher energy density which would mean less cells. It would also qualify for the $7,500 tax credit.

@@gineves3321 No, Tesla is cheap because they design the car to be cheap by removing anything where the cost savings outweigh the potential warranty claims. That is why they don't adhere to industry standards for semiconductors or for waterproofing, which is why you get leaks, and they cut the number of fasteners, which is why you get rattles. Having multiple variants means you can fill production lines more efficiently, which is why VW can shift cars around to fill lines but Tesal is stuck with Austin and Berlin at 40% of the design capacity

That is not going to cut the price/cost. It is a mystery why the Model 3 got that annoying sedan tailgate in the first place, when all of Tesla's other models have the much more practical hatchback. In order to cut cost, it needs smaller battery, smaller motor, basic audio and less configuration. Think only one option for paint, interior and rims. Also, cut the rear screen and the glass roof, and I think they could get to $25.000 with tax credit.

Don't cut the range, just use a weaker motor, people don't need to do 0-60 in 3 sec, and use the cheaper/better chinese battery mentioned in the video. Remove autonomous driving specific hardware (there likely won't be true autonomous driving in our lifetime anyway) so that you have a similar cruise control / safety system to most other manufacturers, Smaller screen, basic stereo system, remove sentry cameras/hardware, remove some of the less popular motorized components like air vents, glove box lock and replace with normal manual ones. Non-retracting door handles will create a good exterior differentiator so the high model owners can still feel baller. Cut price by 25%.

@@PocoToro Depends on the company and product and price points. China is known for making very cheap things, but dollar for dollar they're always the best (and by that I mean they'd make a better $5 wrench than anyone, a better $10 wrench, a better $20 wrench..) What people tend to do is compare a $50 made in US wrench to a $5 made in China wrench, which obviously is not a valid comparison. A $5 wrench from germany for example would probably fall apart as you unpackaged it because in order to get that price point, it would be made out of cardboard whereas a $5 wrench from China, while not as durable for a professional who gives it hard use every day, is perfectly usable for occasional home use. For the more expensive items from China, they're expensive because better materials, better QC. So if you get something from China that's above the budget range in price for it's product type you'll typically get something quite good, especially if the company has been around. If you ever see a chinese product that costs around the same as a US product (and there are many items like this), and that product has lots of sales, you know it blows the US product clean out the water. It's not as black and white as Chinese stuff is junk, there are reputable products from there.

People wanted to read that as "see, the 'model 2' is still in the plan" but that's not how I read it. They talked explicitly about upcoming lower cost models not having the manufacturing improvements and leveraging existing platforms more in order to, among other things, reduce capital expenditures. The "model 2" as we have come to expect it (new platform, Texas, then Mexico, unboxed assembly, etc) is way out in the TBD future. Once again, Elon's mouth has promised more than Tesla's reality permits. Oh, and look at all the "construction" videos from Giga Mexico.

It's not just about price. As others have pointed out the Model 3 & Model Y are large cars by European standards, and smaller hatchbacks are still very popular (Golf size and smaller). Tesla are cutting themselves off from a large portion of the market if they just produce a stripped down Model 3/Y. Then again, how much credence to give to Reuters.

Don't know about this routers news/rumour. Seems counter to the Tesla ethos of simplicity, including - especially - manufacturing processes and the assembly floor in the factory. If it was a different platform such as a small hatch (?) at least there is benefit from the incurred increase in complexity in opening new market segments and having more scope to cheapen the product so to speak. Actually I'm talking myself into thinking maybe they should drop the idea of a model 2. Leave that market segments to the Chinese competitors.

Take the existing 3 and Y bodywork (not Highland or Juniper), put in a cheap interior, standard noisy tires, single induction motor, LFP or Sodium batteries, no Sentry cameras, standard wipers, mechanical glovebox, metal roof, cheap wheels, solid paint colors, cheap stereo, no FSD, basic cruise control, cheap carpet or rubber floor mats, plastic steering wheel etc etc. Make it the kind of Plain Jane car that Chevrolet used to sell, then try to upsell them in the showroom if you can, like the Big Three used to do. If that won't do it, then sell them a used Tesla.

I knew it! The model 2 has been put on the back burner at best. I KNEW that musk’s talk about accelerated work on a cheaper model had nothing to do with the model 2. There was really nothing good to report on the latest earnings call, so musk had to spin and over exaggerate and outright lie in order to keep the stock price from falling, and it worked. Don’t get me wrong, I think the future for Tesla will be bright, just not so much in the next 2 or 3 years. There will be no unattended fsd and therefore no robo-taxis, no model 2, no big model changes, and no big sales of his humanoid robots Nothing really big coming from Tesla in the next 2 years.

Hey Sam, you seem to have forgotten that last time Reuters came out with some 'news', Elon piped up and said they were lying. My bet is this will happen again. There is also the chinese design team hired to create the Model 2, and the new factory that's been built in china (Shanghai) specifically for this new car, right next to the existing factory. IMO it won't be Texas, Berlin, Fremont, Mexico or the moon/mars where it will be built, it will be china.

Making less capable versions of existing cars would seem to make sense but I fear that too many features that make a Tesla a Tesla will be jettisoned and the brand diminished. However , a lower cost car is what is needed to spur more growth and adoption of EV's and if they can make and sell a sub 30K USD car that will really be great. Also , accelerate the growth of the charging network tremendously at the same time and we will see the EV revolution won.

Battery prices are dropping significantly globally. However, US battery prices are not dropping as fast due to a protectionist market and most LFP batteries comiing from Chinese companies. If they were to use Chinese batteries, that would eliminate $45/kWh in battery production tax credit and the $7500 purchase tax credit. In other words, on a 55 kWh battery, the restricted subsidies available total~$10k, more than the price of an equivalent battery overseas.
@larryevans6739
@larryevans6739 20 күн бұрын
Also of note: A smaller battery would reduce their range and receive less in ZEV regulatory credits. In total, subsidies make up much of the battery cost in the US and a smaller battery would not be as much in savings once you include the subsidies.

Battery cannot be smaller than that of a SR+. Need to reduce weight somehow. Cost of materials could be lowered, with lower grade. Glass can be non-laminated with tint and could be lower quality. Need to cut down on redundant components, steering drive unit, redundant fsd cpu, low cost audio system. More non physical touch controls. No fulltime sentry, will degrade battery. Need a low powered sentry mode(with cheaper cameras as well). Could use a mix of steel in place of aluminum. Simplify and reduce wiring length, weight, wireloom complexity and window regulators(may be perfect seal windows are not needed, with little loss on drag coefficient). Definitely use a low cost small size drive unit, that is maxed out with normal acceleration. Need to use an optimus for assembly as well, as to reduce human assembly time. Could get rid of sophisticated softfuse and expensive silicon carbide electronics, with further reduction in parts count of active microcontrollers. Just some 💭

The two biggest hurdles that holds most carbuyers back in EU, are 1. the price. Entry price for M3SR in say Denmark is still 59K$. No intensives - only heavy taxes. 2. Most parking spaces and roads in Europe are very very narrow, and most people wouldnt buy a M3 or MS, because its not very pratical to use in the cities, because of the large size. Of course Tesla knows its important to reduce the size of M3 say 10%, keeping the sporty look and aerodynamics. Also lowering the price, would be the perfect match. That would also prevent too much osborning effect, if the M2 is not of the same size as M3. Reduction in range or size of the screen, tech facilities, ota or any other features that makes Teslas appealing, would be suicide, as these are the main rasons for Teslas popularity in Europe. I guess Chinees would think the same way. Anyone that have driven in say the english country side, fully understands, but in USA and down under they dont seem to take that fact into consideration.

I like Tesla's EXCEPT their interiors are super boring and use a lot of hard plastic. I believe other brands of EV's will keep capturing market share by offering EV's that ICE drivers can identify with more (e.g. having controls for all occupants in the car, not just on one screen). I for one enjoy the fact that I have a choice to use knobs or an LCD panel in my car. Tesla's just don't feel like they have much luxury, except for their performance. PS: range and charging times, IMHO, are huge factors for the general public adopting EV's (and yes, price as well). I think many people still have range anxiety. Of course with continued technological breakthroughs, these types of concerns will go away.

If I turn the AC off, I want it to STAY OFF, not keep popping up like a whack-a-mole. 3. If my passenger is hot, and wants the fan on, I don't have the option to switch a fan OFF on my side. 1) A 10% reduction in cost isn't going to change anything. 2) If the sheet metal basically looks like the Model 3/Model Y, Tesla faces the problem of the perception that the design has become boring. This is the result of having so few distinct models. 3) I disagree on what changes Tesla has in mind to produce a "high value" Model 3 and Model Y. I am assuming the less expensive no-rare earth's motor that Tesla bragged about 2 years ago is real. If that is true, the Tesla will go with slightly less efficient, less slightly less powerful motor. They will take advantage of the more favorable battery market. The will replace the glass roof with a conventional all steel roof. And that's your new, high value, car. Trivial capital expenditure. Lower cost per vehicle. Exactly what the doctor ordered.
