I had the same problem in hp laptop. And I found the battery cell is dead completely. The laptop wont turn on cuz the laptop check the ( rtc) line from battery so i soldering an external 3v battery on rtc way and the laptop working but without battery. Until i got new battery. So the problem is the rtc way in some laptop's. Cuz in new laptops the use the main battery as rtc battery to feed the bios
@grzegorzw504211 ай бұрын
I was thinking exactly the same. BIOS can't store data in memory - probably can be checked by for example changing the date and check if it is not resetting. When there are few reboots on the start some settings like memory speed data etc. should be stored to speed up the boot time on the next turn on.
@space_cowboy0079 ай бұрын
rtc line would be the white wires on the battery connector, yes? would you not need to unlock the battery with the software if you did this trick?

Very impressed how you knew where to open the battery to find the fuses. I didn't even realise they had one time fuses in them. It is amazing and also sad how more and more hardware needs software/firmware to fix. Love your work!

Charge the battery"s cells to about 3.3 to 3.5v using alligator clips and a current limited 5V power source. Once all cells are at the correct voltage apply a voltage greater than the sum of the pack cells to the battery output wires. Next verify you have voltage at the power terminals. Finally reinstall the battery and charge it up with the power off, next boot the laptop and set up the cmos.❤

Interesting video Sorin. The whole problem caused by a faulty battery seems incredible and my first thoughts were faulty power switch. Next time I get a laptop with a similar fault I'll remember to check the battery first and I'm off to buy that battery analyser you use, very handy tool to have.
@simbaleo829311 ай бұрын

The lid sensor theory was actually quite good. I have a lenovo that behaves exactly like that. I have to close the lid as soon as i turn it on for it to stay on. If i leave the lid open, it keeps rebooting even before windows starts loading. There is a magnet on the lid. I put a magnet on top of the scroll lock key (which is where the magnet on the lid rests when it's closed) and that's how i can use the laptop. Sometimes, very rarely the problem goes away (like 1 in 20 times). I've desoldered the hall effect sensor (a simple SOT-23 part) but the problem remained so i just tossed it under the bed. It's a very cheap and slow laptop that's not even worth a repair.

I really hope this doesn't become the norm in laptops. Buying a new battery isn't always economical for an older laptop and given that in a lot of cases people keep their laptops connected to a mains outlet all the time, replacing a dead battery might not even be strictly necessary.

Miss the old days where electronic faults were logical and not proprietary firmware related... Looks like soon enough we won't be able to fix much because of expensive equipment needed to analise simple faults like this.. dead battery should not impair laptop functionality beyond beeing charger bound..

❤ so this says also that when we have a dead battery, we should check if it is really used or locked, and find a strategy to make it working. I had a similar issue with my tablet, I changed the battery because suddenly it was not charging, saying non sense about the charging state an what I was able to measure. I put a noname battery, without any circuit only + and - and driven directly a recharge. Since works fine. This is programmed obsolescense 1000% out of folowing Sorin😊

Balancing the battery in balanced mode. Asus is easy to balance, others are harder. Balancing only happens, when you work below 30%, by checking on the start menu, opening and closing files, renaming, etc. vudeo, games, net, mp3 kills the battery during the balancing process. Only the desktop items must be in use, office or others won’t have positive effect. The battery can go down to 1% hibernation.

On this battery one of the cells which located near the cooling fan is heated more then others. It causes excessive self discharge rate in comparison to cooler cells. Also it could cause chemistry degradation if cell gets too hot. Sometimes it is enough to inject into such cells extra charge so their voltage is up to 30mV leading above other cells. It will compensate increased selfdischarge rate for some period and let the battery to be in service. p.s. On the video lagging cell was not fully balanced and still have big voltage difference. It could cause same issue to be happened.

Seems like all these Asus Zenbooks have the same problem with the battery fuse. I recently got similiar Asus Zenbook UX425UA, symptoms were almost the same, but i could get the laptop to work without battery at all, so I knew i had to replace it, when i did, the issue was gone. I am just surprised that in your case it didn't work without battery connected.

The battery-analyzer is a good product, but indeed a bit expensive. It becomes way more expensive because you need to have a yearly subscription to unlock batteries that is a seperate option ($269 per year, or $399 for 2 years or $999 for 10 years, and that's excl. VAT). So it's only worth it if you repair batteries regularly). I found out after I ordered it and only had a 10 day free battery unlock option...
