The emergency stop button is not the alarm even though it rings a bell. You should never press it unless you're in physical danger. It's designed to shut elevator down. The actual alarm is emerg call.

most modern lifts/elevators have 2 different fire modes "fire phase 1 and "fire phase 2" "fire phase 1" is activated using the key switch outside the elevator cars or by the buildings fire alarm system. When activated using the key switch the selected cars will stop responding to calls and key presses and return to the designated floor (usually lobby/ground floor) and open the doors then close them again after a few seconds then stay there until the "fire recall" switch is turned off using the key. if "fire recall mode" activated automatically by the buildings fire alarm system the lift/elevator will stop responding to calls and lock out the buttons inside the car and return to the designated floor (or the floor above if the alarm was activated on the "recall floor") open the doors for a few seconds then close them again and stay there until the fire alarm is deactivated OR the fire recall switch is activated (using the "fire service switch" outside the set of cars) "fire phase 1" does NOT over ride the stop switch inside the elevator as seen in the video which is why the engineer was annoyed. "Fire phase 2" is activated using the "fire service" key switch inside the car during "fire phase 2" the car enters "manual control" mode which deactivates the safety functions such as door sensors and will respond to floor key presses inside the car but once at the requested floor will not automatically open the elevator/lift doors until the door open key is pressed to allow fire fighters to check for heat in case their is fire outside the car doors. once the doors are open the key switch can be set to the "hold" position which will hold the car at the floor until it is deactivated.

Good that the operator asked if the person was having medical issues. I personally know someone who was stuck in an elevator. She panicked and ended up going into cardiac arrest. Sadly, she passed away.
@Jamestube8439 Жыл бұрын
Typically on stuck elevators they do sometimes try to put it in Fire Service to force it to come down to the main floor. But that doesn't always fix the problem as seen here. That technician definitely didn't sound too happy about that, especially since he said he told them not to put it in fire service in the future.

Yep these stop switches can be pulled out via the rubber ring. Also what kind of building is this?

I sure wish I knew that at the time, it might have gotten me out sooner! As for the location, it's within an academic building at the university where I was a student at the time.

I remember you texted me during this ordeal. Definitely made for some good content! I remember you telling me about the technician being mad about the fact that the University police put the elevator in fire service. That guys reaction was hilarious!
@ElementElevators Жыл бұрын
Yeah I remember! I wish I could have posted this video sooner, although I forgot about it for a while. I was definitely not expecting to see that reaction first thing after getting out of the elevator. Also, something I noticed after editing the video is that there isn't actually an OTIS office located in Ithaca; the nearest one is about 35 minutes away (near Elmira). So chances are, the technician drove from Elmira, came on the scene and opened the doors manually first thing, then questioned why the elevator was in fire service. I could be totally wrong about this, but I feel like everything adds up here.

Me too, and I knew I just had to leave that in the video. I appreciate that the police kept checking to make sure I was alright, but I think it's clear they could use some better training on dealing with stuck elevators lol.

I was at a concert at a symphony hall and some smoke effect put the elevators out of commission. Putting the elevators in fire service mode did not work as intended. I took the stairs. There were two elevators and one of them refused to work. I don't know about the other elevator.

I hate when I get to a job to get somebody out and everybody in the building is trying to get them out … then when somebody gets hurt everybody has a stupid look on there face … DONT TOUCH ANYTHING DAMN IT … SIT ON YOUR HANDS YOU DONUT then to make it worse when they do get him out the power is still on the bell is connected to a separate battery but the buzzer is coming from your main line which should be off in this situation when taking someone out … brings us back to stupid look if somebody gets hurt smh thankfully no one was hurt but please just call for help and sit down

I don’t know if i should be glad that elevators where i live generally can’t be manually put into fire service (with the exception of designated firefighting elevators)
@ElementElevators Жыл бұрын
Interesting. I feel like fire service, when used properly (and in an actual fire), is beneficial. It's just times like this that might make us think otherwise.
@pineappleroad Жыл бұрын
@@ElementElevators i think the reason why its like that where i live, is to make it easier to identify which elevators are suitable to be used by firefighters (as there are very specific requirements that must be met in order for the elevator to be considered suitable, including that the elevator must be able to serve ALL the floors it passes (which I believe is not a requirement in the US)) I won’t go into detail on these requirements as i would probably end up writing an essay (there are quite a few, and there are also differences in how fire service operates and is used)

The way those old Otis stop switches work is you have to pull the part around the button out to deactivate it. Usually those kind say “push to stop pull to run” on them, but not this one I guess. Bad labeling.

Not sure if calling 911 from a cell phone is a good idea while stuck in the elevator for a prolonged period of time
@ElementElevators Жыл бұрын
I would say it is if the emergency phone inside the elevator isn't working. In this case, there was a working phone which automatically dials the police department when picked up.

@ElementElevators Жыл бұрын
Yep! I suppose that would work if the issue was that none of the COP buttons were working (with everything else still functional), but that's the only scenario I can think of where fire service would be beneficial with someone inside a trapped elevator. And even then, someone can just call the elevator normally from the outside, unless those didn't work either for some reason.
