Dr. Allan Jaffe, a Professor of Cardiology and a Professor of Laboratory Medicine and Pathology at Mayo Clinic, in Rochester, MN, shares insights from his article appearing in the September 2021, issue of Mayo Clinic Proceedings, where he and his colleagues tried to identify the diagnoses and outcomes associated with elevated high sensitivity cardiac troponin T compared to the 4th generation troponin T. They found there were many increases in high sensitivity cardiac troponin T that were missed by the 4th generation assay, but that most new increases were not related to primary cardiac causes. They were more consistent with chronic myocardial injury.
