As much as I agree with that statement, this has been the convenient excuse for sending men to fight in wars that women are not forced to fight. In our current world where women's sense of entitlement to anything afforded to either sex, I refuse to support the pervasive old ideology of male expendability and treating women as royalty.

You know, Eli, during the Second World War (the Great Patriotic War), expeditions of schoolchildren aged 14-17 were sent from Arkhangelsk to Novaya Zemlya. They had to get seal meat and fat there, collect bird eggs, bird meat, fishing, and so on. Books have been written about this in the USSR, and a film was made (it's called "Summer Walk to the Sea"). One of the books was written by Nikolai Vurdov, a member of the first such expedition. Of course, he is not a writer, so his book is more a historical testimony than a literary work. The other one, it's called "Two steps from the war", its author Vadim Frolov, I liked it a little more from the point of view of literature. Only boys participated in the first expedition of schoolchildren to Novaya Zemlya in 1942, but the following year girls also went on the expedition. And one of them was Olga, my grandmother's younger sister.

Very cool! I had a Russian barber here in Phoenix, AZ that served on those TU-95 bombers. Our NATO designation for them were "Bears". The USSR flew them out of Vladivostok and used them to keep track of the U.S. fleet movements in the Pacific. We called the area "Bear Alley". I asked him, as he was gliding a straight razor carefully across my neck, "Did we ever piss you guys off?" His answer? "You would know by now." Thanks for making the video Eli. That wasn't in 1956, but in 1596 of course. Willem Barentsz led three failed Dutch expeditions to find a Northeast passage to India along the North Pole. During his third expedition he discovered Spitsbergen and Bear Island, but his ship stranded in the arctic ice and he got stuck on Novaya Zemlya (or Nova Zembla as he called it) for almost a year. The Barents Sea is named after him.
