I suppose that we must bow down to superior marketing. I probably learned this about 15 years ago and it was just called a “shoulder lock”. Thunder lock is less descriptive but I suppose that it sounds more intriguing.
@staysafemartialarts7 ай бұрын
I mean it is a shoulder lock but ive heard of this specific way of attacking the shoulder as a Thunder Lock

Hidden in plain sight? Anyone who knows what a half-nelson is should have seen this. Good breakdown. I never understood why anyone "answered the phone."
@torstenscott75717 ай бұрын
That's a great point, and I suspect that they answer the phone to protect themselves from punches (similar to dealing with hooks when boxing). It just looks like a boxing counter that simply does not translate well when prone against a decent wrestler.

OMG... I did this to my older brother back in the 80's... I called it a reversed half nelson... I used the hand pull, not the palms technique. At least he stopped picking on me.
@ryanthompson34467 ай бұрын
Its really kind of cringe how jiu jitsu players try to name every single slight variation of what is simply a shoulder lock an arm lock a triangle lock ect… like this is just an obvious option when you understand why a shoulder lock works at all, we don’t need to psychotically name and rename everything. Fools are fascinated by complexity a genius is fascinated by simplicity.
@staysafemartialarts7 ай бұрын
Id agree with that. Just labeled it this as that is what i see people naming it as, but at the end of the day it is a shoulder lock
@itheuserfirst31867 ай бұрын
Many submission holds have various names. It's not a big deal.
@ryanthompson34467 ай бұрын
@@itheuserfirst3186 i think it is and many people agree with me its pointless complexity its wordy and verbose, an armbar is an armbar idgaf about how you got it, what matters are the invariable reasons an armbar works focus on the invariables and stop masturbating about this bs laundry list of renamed moves.

There’s an old video of catch wrestler/ pro wrestler stu hart doing this very technique on a guy in “the dungeon” there’s even a variation another guy shows he sets it up with the legs and turns it into a shoulder lock/neck crank.

Yeah, nice seeing that move. I started doing that when I was trying to explain look when the guy takes your back and he starts hitting you in the face all those spiders always put their arms on like that. Why don’t you grab it underneath it and then do a full Nelson with their arm behind their head.

It's at least a century old and called a "Bow and Arrow" in Catch wrestling. It got its name from doing this from the mount, but can be done from the Backpack, to someone in a turtle, and side control. From the mount is where it's most brutal because you are pulling up on the arm/shoulder with TWO hand while levering his head DOWN with one of your forearms.

@@staysafemartialarts WOAH thats so sick i didnt think I would actually get a reply thanks. Well I get the body triangle and get their arm behind there head like you showed in the video but when I try to pull the arm back it doesn't make them tap and there torso just turns to a 45 degree angle where I don't have enough leverage to finish it. When I practiced it it never made me or my partner tap am I not pulling far enough or does my partner have really good shoulder mobility?

Nice technique. But here is the problem. I thought of this technique a long time ago, without seeing this or any other video. So, you can give it any name that you want, because I didn't even give it a name when I first thought of it years ago. There are other techniques that I have thought of that also pop the shoulder as well as other techniques that I have thought of to pass guard, and do other techniques. Oh, by the way, did I forget to tell you that I have never in my life trained in BJJ, Sambo, shoot fighting, or any other type of Grappling Art. I just watch, and think to myself, Man, does that look scary. While I am watching then I then pick it apart, you know, like I would in a game of chess. I think always 3 -4 moves ahead, sometimes more. I have always been a natural Grappler, but I think of different finishing moves to add to my discipline. I have always been a striker, and a very focused one at that. But then years ago, when I didn't even know what BJJ was, I saw my first ufc, when I was at this guys I know. A bunch of them were siting around then I showed up. It was Royce Gracie vs Kimo Leopold, and I thought the big guy was going to destroy the little guy in the Gi. Oh boy how I was wrong. When Royce submitted Kimo, I said what happened, and everyone said that is Ju Jitsu. I said what is Ju Jitsu, and they said , you don't know what Ju Jitsu is? I said no, then they explained to me, choke holds, knee bars, ankle locks and all that good stuff that I have now become very familiar with. Even when it comes to Judo, which I have trained in, I have changed the throws for the streets. I do it the way a sensei would teach in a class setting, but in a tournament, or on the street, I do it my way. My way is far better, you will not get punched in the face the way that I do Judo throws. Ummmmmmmmmm, I wonder, since I have changed the throws, it really can not be called Judo, I mean since it is my own brand of throws, that are not taught in Judo. Yeah, but I will just make up a name one day for my whole discipline but for now I do not have a name. I love knee bars, and ankle hooks and ankle locks, those are my specialty. Thank you for the video though, and no, I am not bragging, I am just putting it out there that I thought of this years ago. Just saying. Keep training. Oss!!!!!
