Elijah McClain Death: Judge Sentences Paramedic to 5 Years | Full Sentencing

A judge on Friday sentenced one of the paramedics convicted in the 2019 death of Elijah McClain to five years in the Department of Corrections.
In December, Jeremy Cooper and Peter Cichuniec were each found guilty of criminally negligent homicide following a weeklong trial in Adams County.
The jury found Cooper not guilty of second-degree assault with intent to cause bodily harm and not guilty of second-degree assault for administering drugs without consent. The jury found Cichuniec guilty of second-degree assault for administering drugs without consent and acquitted him of second-degree assault with intent to cause bodily harm.

I can't, for the life of me, understand how ANY jury could've watched the heartbreaking bodycam footage and find two of those officers not guilty. Absolute morons.

The motive was detaining him for absolutely no reason and subsequent actions leading to his death, this is a clear civil rights violation. Sadly his life can’t be restored but they need to pay $100 million dollars for wrongful death.

5 years and the officers got a little over a year? All parties involved ahould have got 20 or more. If this was a little whyte girl the sentence would have been longer

Which statute are you referring to that demands at least 20? Do you have the reference to the sentencing guidelines for said statute?

All professionals are responsible for their actions while completing their duties. We have to do more to separate the roles of medical/mental health professionals and law enforcement in this country.

Five years isn't Justice!! Their actions helped to take someones child, grandchild , brother, family and friend(s)!! These people's families can see them again! Elijah's family will never see, hear, feel :a hug and see the beautiful soul that i believe could have done so much for this world! My heart breaks for his family and the people who he touched in his life; all who would have had the privilege to know him! I hope this case at least stops more of these things happening! I really hope so but it doesn't seem like it'will ever get better! Sad how this one incident affected so many lives. Civilian and first responders alike! Please we can all do better ❤ thank you for covering th!s !👍

Let this be a lesson to everybody that only if you are a cop you are "part of the team” and paramedics (i.e.) are not , so next time think twice after listening to an officer on how to do YOUR JOB , you are not in their circle when it comes to accountability….also why is this judge talking too much as if he needs to excuse them and not even talking like he should , you can barely hear him want to speak clearly and dictate sentencing on a murder case.

All defendants in criminal cases have a less than 10% chance of getting acquitted(any number of charges)

It wasn’t. There was literally no conduct that met the factors of this being a hate crime by statute. If the prosecutors thought that it did meet those factors, they would’ve charged them so. You’re looking to affirm your own narrative of police/first responders rather than analyzing the situation legally.
