It is so validating to hear another AuDHD talk about the need for travel with the need for organization with a vacation spreadsheet. This is something I’ve been teased (in a fun way) all my adult life but I’ve only been diagnosed since last year. World building is so important for me. We recently returned from our second trip in 4 months. First trips in 3 years and 2 within a few months of each other 😂🤦🏻 We need a weighted blanket rental service 😂 or free weighted blanket check in on planes… yeah right

TSA CARES can help you through security to avoid being rushed. Hidden disability sunflower let's the people know that you need a little more time. Preboard don't get rushed. I enjoy travel just came back from Europe. Limit it to one or two small things. Don't over plan stuff so I can take the time to transition. I had two meltdowns in a day and knew it was time to go home.

OMG you could be me when I travel!!!! I feel so seen!!! I’m taking the phrase world building for myself because I do exactly what you do! One thing I always do is find a grocery store where I can get the foods I need as part of my world building process. I don’t feel grounded until I can do that. I also cannot pack light. It’s always such a thing to pack light…my sis can travel for a week using only a small-medium backpack and she teases me about not being able to do that. It’s true. I can’t! No way!!! So mahalo for this video!!!! Enjoy the Aloha spirit!!! 🌴🌺🌄

Wow! You are me! I am you? I am repeatedly blown away by the very specific things you say, which I do. I always assumed it was just my quirkiness, my anxiety, but now I’m thinking it might be more. I wouldn’t even think to mention so many of these things because it’s just how I am. Video idea - How do you know what’s Autism vs what’s ADHD vs Anxiety/Panic?

"I'll go to the website I'll look at all the video videos I'll look at the gallery and I'll make sure that I understand kind of like what to expect visually I'll look at maps..." Yes! I like to build a framework in my mind before I go. It helps me 'absorb' as much as possible when I'm there. I do a similar thing with movies--- before I watch a movie, I'll read a detailed description of the plot. It helps me fully 'absorb' the movie.

Can I tell a story? I also love to travel, and believe in it as an excellent way to just be a better human being, especially if you're going to stick around in a foreign country for a while. Ignorance dies. You get very okay with people around you being different from you. But anyway, once, when I was about 26, I was very suddenly given the opportunity to go to South Korea for six weeks (all summer, pretty much) to teach English at a summer camp for kids/teenagers. It was a paid job, so it wouldn't cost me anything and I had a small amount of debt to pay off with no other way to do that. I had just come home from Lithuania with a broken leg (which had just healed). If I went to Korea, I'd be coming home with money. And my sense of adventure was telling me this was an opportunity I should take. But the time between finding out about all this and getting on the plane to go was less than two weeks. I was FREAKING OUT. The day I had to go to Toronto to hand over my passport to get the visa, I was freaking out so bad, I threw up in a trash receptacle in a Toronto subway station. Not that I knew any of this. I knew on some vague level that I was stressed out, but when I got sick, I was thinking, "Oh, great, stomach bug." 😂 It wasn't a stomach bug. That was the only time I threw up. Still, I spent time trying to riddle out why I had been sick. Was it the blueberries I ate at breakfast? I never once thought it was because I was freaking out really bad. Anyway, somehow, we got a direct flight from Toronto to Seoul, which is 13 hours or so. I didn't use the toilet once in all those 13 hours. I just never felt the need to go. On the bus from Seoul to Chuncheon, I was curled up on the seat with my eyes squeezed shut. The other teachers were all getting off the bus during the stops and looking around and curious about where we were. I was just praying I'd open my eyes and see home instead of South Korea out the window. At the camp, I spend a couple days in bed, not even wanting to eat... Well, you get the idea. I had no idea I was autistic. But soon I got into a new routine and I've always been SO GLAD I went. The kids were great. It was beautiful there, in the mountains, only about half an hour away from the DMZ (incidentally). I came home with a love for spicy food. So yeah, travel when you're on the spectrum can be rough. I wish I'd had some of these strategies then. This was in 2003, so it was before smart phones and instant googling, but we had a home computer with dial-up internet. What a great idea to look up the place you're going to ahead of time!

AuDHD here. I plan the hell out of my trips, usually going through a half-dozen versions of my itinerary as I fine tune it. I usually end up sticking to 90% of it, albeit sometimes running over on time at one place and skipping another. And about 10% of the time I end up having to improvise because of weather or other factors. The extensive planning lets me know what my timetable is and what my options are so I feel comfortable changing plans because I've over-prepared. It's especially important for me because my vacations are rarely about going to one place and spending several days there. Usually I'm traveling from Point A to Point B, with stops along the way. I also prefer driving to flying. Besides generally disliking the experience of flying (wait in long lines, get stuck in a seat for 2-10 hours, wait in more lines) driving not only lets me stop whenever I feel the need, but lets me adjust easier. I'm not leaving know and abruptly arriving in the unknown; instead I'm gradually transitioning from familiar to unfamiliar, from known to unknown. Driving also means I don't have to worry about fitting everything into my luggage.

I saw relate to being overwhelmed by travel. I've been on a couple of trips and spent most of the trip in a hotel. Room covers over my head. Usually when I travel, it's for work. So I've learned to get there a day early. And I've learned to plan a day at home. After my return before I have to go back to work. I don't get anxious about having stuff because whatever I pack. There's always something that I didn't remember to Pack. But even though I've been knowing I was autistic for a while. I never really thought about giving myself. Some grace for the fact that I don't travel well. And that's understandable.

Thank you for this, great timing I am headed on a trip shortly. I so appreciated what you shared about going with the flow while taking care of myself, remaining flexible and asking what is available now. The one thing I'm doing differently is packing very light which I'm actually looking forward to, I'm kind of excited to feeling young again with nothing but a bag after years of bringing lots for me and fam. I completely understand being accepting of bringing what you need as well, I just know that having a lot to manage might be more overwhelming for me in this situation and I'm looking forward to going simple. That said, I will have a couple of my resources like Anc headphones, sunglasses, simple comfortable clothes, ear buds, a comfort item, etc. That SDC pillow is cool! Enjoy, thanks for all your support and wisdom! ❤

Safe travels to you! Thank you for the tips; that pillow is amazing! I like “being” in other places, but hate the procedure of getting there. World building, oh yes. By the time I arrive, I’m almost a local. Two of the biggest game changers for me have been noise cancelling headphones (playing either an audiobook or meditations) and airport lounges! I will happily pay to be out of the waiting area (bc of course I arrive hours early…) And they have food and their own restrooms. I ❤️ lounges!

I was curious to click on this bc I've traveled from a young age, and so picked up some tips from family (eg how to fit everything you need in 1 bag, always carry food) but always had my own strategies too that they didn't need...like the intensive research and planning phase, or making sure to have an immersive book so that I could better screen out the noisy chaos of the airport. Though, in that latter case, I've found noise-canceling earbuds are a godsend! I had no idea how much energy it was taking me to screen until I felt the immediate calm that came with blocking the noise. I feel like other people don't understand the way I plan. They see the schedule or itinerary and think I'm being rigid. But actually, that is what I need IN ORDER TO BE FLEXIBLE. If, for example, it rains or the museum isn't open when I thought it would be, or whatever...I already know what my other options are. Conversely, those "surprise vacations" people sometimes do for their SO...I would hate that SO MUCH! Taking breaks either in the hotel (or in quiet spots like a garden) is also super important. I should have known a therapist was going to be a bad fit for me when I was recounting happening on a parade in Mexico by accident and having fun watching it for 2 hours before I had to stop and remove myself from that crowd, and then going to the traditional market that's full of colors and smells and people shouting and enjoying that for a limited period of time and then having to go back to the hotel for a bit...and she was like "who taught you to be that way?" And I hadn't been diagnosed yet, but I was SO confused. I was like: "Um, no one? If anything, people tried to train me to be less of a party-pooper. But I just have a time limit beyond which that kind of thing isn't fun anymore." I don't think I "worldbuild" as much initially - I'm more likely to dash straight to the thing I already decided I wanted to interact with (especially if it is the ocean) to get a dose of it...and being very annoyed if there are people or processes in the way! And I actually feel better with a pared-down set of stuff in my bag, because it means that everything is something I'm going to use a lot, and I don't have to sift through a bunch of things to find what I need (which is also why I don't use large purses at home!). That takes experience to figure out, though. I used to bring more dressy clothes, for example...and then not wear most of it, and feel guilty for not wearing it or for having wasted the space. Now I tend to have one cute, comfy dress that I like and just go with that whenever I end up going to a nicer restaurant or whatever. Also, if I check a bag...it is SO annoying every time to have to deal with the bag check system, even if they don't lose it (which is a nightmare, because then you don't have the stuff you were counting on having). BUT...I totally get why someone might find it worthwhile!

Traveling is a stressful event for any person. I do feel like all of us have their own unique ways to prepare mentally and emotionally for that. From melatonin and wine during the flight to favorite music, and movies. Also we never forget for the additional support, soft pillow, blanket, headphones, resting pillow for feet etc. Aside from meticulous planning and visualisation every trip that includes flying is followed by leaving a will to my husband.

All the stuff! I have a hard time with air travel specifically because I can't easily carry everything I need. Plus I've mostly travelled by myself, so lugging it all around can be as much of a challenge as not having everything I need. With a car, you can carry so much more! I get a little better at it every time, and I DO love to fly and to go places that are far enough to fly to. But there's usually at least one small meltdown at some point. I learned a long time ago that, whether I like it or not, I'm high maintenance, and everyone is better off if I maintain myself. It was a weird realization because in many classic ways I'm very "low maintenance." My wardrobe, hair, and makeup routine are all very minimalist, for example. But the sensory issues and risk of burnout mean that I need to plan very carefully for various contingencies. I can manage to keep my symptoms under control (I'm only diagnosed ADHD but ASD is also possible) until I get really exhausted. If I get too exhausted on top of all of the possibilities for sensory overload while traveling, it can lead to a major meltdown situation and some terrible decision-making. I'm still hurting from a 2013 trip when I decided to book a business class flight home in the middle of the night when I hadn't slept in two days because I didn't accept my high-maintenance-ness and tried to room with two other women. Bad idea.

I'm in the process of self-diagnosing. I've been all over the world and have worked as an English teacher in multiple countries. I love to travel, but.... to this day, when the bus or plane or train or car arrives in a new city and I have to get off that piece of transportation, I literally have an anxiety attack. I also get super irritated at all of the potentially helpful people around me and start acting completely unreasonable, but... I'm really just scared. (I always travel by myself.) Now that I've realized this a huge stress for me, I often manage the stress by not leaving the airport or train or bus station for quite a while. I wait until I'm ready. And, that might be 2 hours later.

YES! Planning and spreadsheets for the win ❤ and I absolutely love your comment about world building, I've never had a term that encapsulates that feeling for me, so thank you. Definitely going to be borrowing that. We just did our first European trip and I planned so much because I had so much anticipatory anxiety about wasting precious time just sitting in our hotel recouping. But you're so right, even after planning and studying reviews and maps and pictures ad nauseam, I still needed significant time to just feel out this new reality before I could even begin to start executing anything in my plan. It helps so much to hear from someone else who gets that.

Yes, yes, yes!! I literally make a list of what I'm going to pack (i.e. 4 pairs of jeans, 6 pairs of socks, 1 comb, 2 towels, 1 book to read, my backpack - this is a comfort for me when I'm traveling). When I get there, I have to unpack, shower (because I always feel dirty), and then lay down for no less than 2 hrs in silence. No matter where I'm going and whether it's for the weekend or 2 weeks, I pack like we're going to the wilderness for a year (minus taking a bunch of food and drinks). I can't handle not having something I might need or want when I'm away from home. I'm grateful I know now why I'm the way I am. Anytime my husband asks why I do "that" or why this noise bothers me, I send him one of your videos (that answers his question). Not only have you helped me but you've helped my husband understand me better. For that, here's a virtual hug (because none of us wanna be touched by strangers 😅). I like to travel, so I leverage my chameleon side and put on my travel hat. This part of me loves adventure and can go with the flow. But I also need to plan and research before I go. I didn't do this when we hiked the Camino in Spain, but we were hiking every day, and that helped me to regulate. I still have a need to rest on travel (moving in a car, airplane, train) days, and I'm difficult to be around until I'm more regulated, but I'm getting better at disciplining myself to not splash my negativity on my family- which is different from just holding it in. I am working on regulating in real time. Stating my needs as they are needed " I need to eat some protein." I need to hydrate," etc. My husband is great, and he helps me. When I get home, then I crawl into my chair outside or my bed, and I rest... I used to feel guilty about my need for rest after a vacation, but not since my self diagnosis, several years ago. (I got the medical diagnosis this year). If you want to go on a vacation and you haven't... try something like a short beach or lake trip and spend most of your time in a relaxing spot. I like the beach, and I stay there almost all day, every day. Follow Taylor's suggestions and have a good time! Getting out of your usual environment can be beneficial.

I did the world building even as a child now that you mention it. This was before everyone had the internet in their homes let alone their pocket. I’d study AAA guides that my parents had and look at maps of the area. On another note, how about sleep? I have a sleep routine that gets completely messed up while traveling no matter how hard I try to recreate it. I’m always exhausted traveling but still manage to have fun. It would be nice to get a good night’s rest.

You sure know how to make my ADHD side take an anxiety attack at the thought of blowing my daily executive function budget (which is minimal, due to both sides of AuDHD) for multiple days in a row on a *vacation*. 8:20 Not really a fan of the cultural trend of trying to find a super-spiritual sounding Chinese term for everything, but I definitely have a "day at a time" life philosophy, somewhat enforced by the AuDHD executive function difficulties.

I haven't been outside of the US since I was... oh gosh, it had to be before my diagnosis. And even then, I live like, less than an hour's drive away from Canada.

I love to travel, but so far I've only left the Lower 48 for a brief trip across the border to Canada earlier this year. The USA is a big country with lots of great history and scenery. Lots of great places to visit without every leaving the country.

Please travel elsewhere, please research what the people native to those islands have been trying to get others to understand. Hawaii simply isn’t an actual tourist destination, please save those islands. Protect all our people and their lives

Fair points, but I think it's much more nuanced than that. There are responsible ways to go about visiting the islands and even add to the experience of the natives. Just because the tourism industry is bad for the natives doesn't mean that every tourist is.

During a climate crisis, when the indigenous people of Hawaii have been clear about the negative impact of Tourism for years, I am *really* shocked to see anyone openly posting about benefiting from the (obviously negative) colonial, neo-colonial, climate, and environmental impacts of tourism and making sure that the biggest parts of their tourism dollars are going to massive corporations like The Hilton chain. Imagine being AuDHD as an indigenous person in Hawaii who does not have access to all of the resources you do, not having enough spoons to get through your day but not having the space to find "grace" with yourself because your world is being exploited without thought, without acknowledging that what you are doing is not remotely in line with "natures flow" Nobody has a RIGHT to travel, but if you have RESOURCES to travel do it better.

Disappointing to see you travelling to Hawai'i as the natives continue to struggle to survive and preserve their own land from invasive tourism, they are not allowed access to their own resources like water in order for all the hotels and tourist attractions to get priority. I understand your channel is not for social justice but as part of your audience I believe this is in incredibly bad form for you to take part in a huge problem for indigeonous people and believe it is important to call these things out.

The “natives” are now largely Asian… and if not for tourists- the large majority would have no jobs….. that was THE big issue they had during COVID. No tourists = no pay.

@@samanthajane8906 no, the parasitic US economy would collapse (desirable), the indigenous people would thrive without tourism stealing all their native resources. The world exists beyond the end of your nose, quit telling people to be as blind and ignorant as you.

She also mentioned buying something on Amazon, which could equally be "called out". But I don't think thats productive. Its inefficient by setting unrealistic expectations on people and making them feel bad for not meeting them. It will never resonate with the average person, no matter how much we believe its their moral duty to educate themselves and act accordingly. And its not because they're bad people, its because thats how people work. Ultimately, we need legistlation on the big players. Consumer habits will change when what is offered changes.

What did we do before street view for checking out new places?. 😁😁I'll need to remember to pack some food. I get so overwhelmed that I end up staying in my hotel room for the rest of the day with nothing to eat. I've been know to eat hotel sugar packets just to get by. 😁😁Sounds like such a simple thing to do, but the anxiety build up, pre travel ,is so bad I can't think about much else.
