Great knot. I use the double San Diego Jam knot for the same reason. Palomar and the improved clinch knot don’t play well with Floro.

I saw in your example there you had a straight Flipping hook. With those hooks, I've always been told to snell them to get that upward popping action on the hookset. Thoughts?

I use the Snell knot only when punching with those huge weights. I'll have to try it though. Sounds like it would be a great experiment video. Thank you for bringing that up!

First time I tried fluoro line I was using palomar or improved clinch knots on 4 and 6 pound test. I couldn’t even cinch up the knot without breaking it. Kept me away from fluoro for 4 years!

thanks for the tip. i've been dealing with palomar knot shock for quite a while now and i've finally decided to do something about it. so is 3 wraps good for 17 pound flouro (abrazx)? what about 15 pound?
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
Great question. I have been using 3 wraps for multiple pound test lines. I haven't had any issues yet with three wraps, but I would sure think that four would be fine if you are looking to go a little more. I use 20lb a lot and had great success with it. Once you get the pinky finger figured out holding the loop for you it is a super fast knot to tie.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors thanks for the speedy response! i'm looking at using either the double san diego jam knot or the double uni knot. i've been using the uni knot for years to connect braid to flouro so i'm very confident tying it. i'll give the double-uni a shot and see if it fixes my "knot shock" issues. i've been struggling with breaking off when doing a snap hookset on the palomar knot for at least 2 years. i can't believe more people don't know about this issue. i thought i must be tying my knot wrong or setting my drag too tight or had a kink/fray or just plain ol' bad luck. thanks again for the tip, i'm hoping this solves my issues with breaking off.

@@bradalanfoster I totally understand. I went through the same thing. I even sent rods back thinking the eyes were rough. Lol. Oops. It is a huge issue with fluoro and you just don't hear it talked about that much.

Thanks Steve. I am not a fan of a Palamar knot with floro. Especially any floro under 12lb can snap at the knot. I use a knot with 3 tag ends but is easy to tie and minimal line wast. I believe it's the old Trilene knot but not sure of the name. I have seen alot of pros tie it and they didn't know the name either but say it's a 100% knot.

I’ve often thought about using a drop of super glue on my knot to make them super strong. Anyone know why this would be a bad idea? Any evidence the fish smell glue and do t bite? Happy Easter everybody!

Roland Martin uses a drop of super glue. I don’t believe it affects the bite negatively. If anything, it probably increases catches by making knot stronger.

Steve, I also use and love the double line uni. Pretty easy to tie as well. On big lures or rigs you also don’t have to feed it all through that loop like you do for the Palomar, so it’s nice, fluoro doesn’t like the line cutting back on itself like the Palomar causes. I sometimes set up line knot tests in my garage and with the double line uni, it never breaks at the knot. Heck I even believe the single uni to be better than the Palomar for fluoro anyway on my tests. Great video!

Is there a difference between this and the 'Double Pitzen'?
@SteveRogersOutdoors

They are basically the same except for how the wrap is done. Two great knots. If you are a Double Pitzen user I'd stick with it. Super strong and also eliminates that knot shock.

@@SteveRogersOutdoors Thank you for the reply. Gotta say-been watching KZbin bass gurus for some time now (started fishing @ 65-be 70 in June-still suck at it), & just found you recently. It struck me that of all those experts, you're the one I'd most like to go fishing with. Ever hit Whiskeytown Lake in N. CA? Shasta's the big bass lake up here, so I'm curious what a pro could do in the 'trout. water of Whiskeytown.
@SteveRogersOutdoors
@SteveRogersOutdoors Жыл бұрын
@@mr.bummers I have not fished that lake. If it's similar to a lot of those CA lakes, I'm guessing it has really good clarity. If I was fishing it for the first time, I would either target some big fish or go for numbers. If big fish was on my plan for the day, in those trout lakes it is hard to beat a great big swim bait. The bites may be few and far between, but you could get hit by a giant. The Huddleston swimbaits are the ones I have the most experience with. They are pricey, but they have tremendous action. If I was going for numbers and trying to find fish, I would probably use a suspending jerkbait to really cover some water and when you find a school, that jerkbait can catch a bunch quickly.

Funny, after bas fishing, trout fishing and saltwater fishing for 35+ years now, the only knot I use is the advanced clinch knot and the only line I use is Izorline xxx copolymer. Strong ass hell, limp as it gets, very low memory, neutrally buoyant, small diameter and best of all… very well priced! Believe me…. I’ve tried just about every line on the market over the years. For me, Izorline xxx copolymer simply gets the job done!
