This was an incredibly informative video from someone who has been doing this for years! I appreciate it!

What prepping should be done if the walls are painted?
@spencercolgan10 ай бұрын
Score them by scratching them up well with 60-grit sandpaper preferably on a machine or a sanding pole.

If painted with a shiny paint sand with 60 grit. If flat, all the better-do nothing.

I highly recommend using a paint roller to apply the mud pros or beginners. Then smooth it out.

Thanks Spencer. Going through this now myself. Got a wall in our entryway where the sun shines through the window at basically a perfect 90° angle doan the wall. All of the imperfections are glaringly obvious. Very ugly. I just got done doing coat 1. Rolled the mud on in 12" sections and skimmed it off super tight. I probably am going to do 4 coats just to be sure. Maybe even 5. Id do 6 if i had to. I think the fact that you can do this and slowly build the material up with little to no sanding makes it worth the added time. When you go tight like this are you able to get multiple coats done in 1 day? I am in MN where its very dry right now and my house is around 65°

Always check with a daylight led light close up after you’re done to make sure your coat doesn’t need sanding. Use 220 to knock down any shadows you notice from highs and over compounding

But this vid is very good and informative. How most novice and beginners should be doing it. Ignore everything else because if you go to heavy you’ll create WAVES

Can you do a video showing an equivalent process for smoothing woodwork that’s been painted badly many times? I find that sanding isn’t enough, but applying filler to wood trim and then sanding it smooth is quite difficult

Many thanks Spencer. I'm mid project and looking for some advice. If I was given poor guidance and have a wall that has a very thick first coat, should I take it all off and start over? OR should I just run a second coat. It has been sanded down for smoothness but it definately has some waves. Should I instead just skim coat over the waves?

Do you sand in between skim coats?
@spencercolgan2 жыл бұрын
Nope. Keep your applications thin. And no eating time sanding. Use a 4” knife to remove “lap” marks from your dried application.
